October 2009 Shooter Profile - Welsh Skeet Shooter - Rhys Evans
Welcome to our sixth WCTSA shooter profile - this month we would like to introduce somebody who was renowned as a top junior skeet shooter, but now is still as successful as a senior - Rhys Evans. Even if you don't follow skeet I'm sure you would recognise this young man if you visit our website regularly as he is the young shooter we have on our homepage and has had many successes over the years.
Over to you Rhys.......
Question 1. What disciplines do you shoot?
Rhys>> Mainly skeet, but also do a bit of sporting and all-round.
Question 2. What type of gun are you using?
Rhys>> Krieghoff K-80.
Question 3. Is there a specific ammunition you favour or tend to use?
Rhys>> Express High Velocity Pro-Comp 9.5s
Question 4. What's your background in shooting, when did you
start, where did you start?
Rhys>> My first go at clay pigeon shooting was when I asked my dad if
I could shoot pheasants on keepers day, so to get me 'trained up', he flung
a couple of clays over me down in the field near the house, and that was it,
I was hooked ever since then. We then proceeded to go to Sealand Shooting
Centre (North Wales Shooting School) for a couple of lessons and it all
picked up from there.
Question 5. List of your achievements to date?
Rhys>> From that I can remember, I have shot Skeet and Sporting for my
County. I've been top Junior and over all high gun for my County in
skeet. I've also been captain of the Skeet County team a couple of
times as a Junior, I'm yet to do this again now as a Senior. I've shot
for Wales three times as a Junior, and we have won the Juniors trophy twice.
And I believe that my biggest achievement was putting a 100 straight in an
International to win the Junior's High gun, and an overall Runner-Up High
Gun at the International.
Question 6. Most memorable shoot/performance?
Rhys>> The most memorable shoot for me is when I shot a 100 straight
in the International up in Auchterhouse, Scotland in 2006. Not only
was it memorable because of my 100 straight, but my junior team-mate Shane
Wilson put in an awesome 99, which meant we put in a record score of 199 ex
200, which I'm still proud of to this day. Good luck to the future junior
teams to try and beat it :-)
Question 7. Who are your close shooting friends?
Rhys>> I have many close friends on the shooting scene, too many to
list. The crowd from the Goat are always a good laugh, the crowd from
the county shoots are all great and so are the big crowd from the
international scene. But I suppose my closest shooting friend would be
my dad, as he was the one that introduced me to shooting, he has always
encouraged me to do my best and even when things look grim, he always puts a
ray of hope on it.
Question 8. Influences, coaches or people who've helped your shooting?
Rhys>> Again, the biggest influence and best coach that I've had is my
dad. I've had a couple of lessons at Sealand which was mainly to get me to
hold the gun properly and have also had a training session with Alan Warren
before the international that was held down in South Wales 2000 back in
2005.
Question 9. Top tip for your chosen discipline?
Rhys>> Concentration. With skeet, the main thing is to keep your
concentration, one slip of concentration could lose you a target, which
ultimately could be the difference between winning and loosing.
Question 10. What are your hopes for the future ?
Rhys>> My hopes are to go on and keep shooting for Wales. I would love
to be able to put in another 100 straight in an international so that I've
accomplished it at both Junior and Senior levels, but I suppose only time
will tell if this happens.
Thank you for your excellent shooter profile submission this month Rhys, it was very interesting.
All the best for the future from all of us here at the WCTSA, we hope you continue in the fine form you have shown in previous years.
North Wales Grand Prix - Llandegla Shooting Ground
- 17th/18th October 2009
Congratulations to the new Llandegla shooting ground manager "Mike Merrington" and all his
staff for putting on a very successful new event for the DTL shooters
calendar - the 200 target North Wales Grand Prix. The event was well supported
with shooters travelling from North, Mid and South Wales, England and as far as Scotland and Ireland/Ulster to fight it out
for the £500 high gun prize and considerable class prizes down to
sixth place per class. As well as high gun and class prizes - the
Junior, Veterans and Ladies sections were also up for grabs, with prizes down
to third place for each of these.
The weather was kind to the shooters throughout this two day event, although temperatures did drop considerably on the Sunday.
It was a hard fought competition and at the top of the table - a single 100/300 was posted on a late squad on the Saturday by English shooter Steve Linley. On his tail were English shooters Ian Mullarkey, G Duffy, R Jones (Veteran) and John Stafford - all posting 100/299.
John Stafford came in first on the Sunday with the magic 100/300, so all eyes were on the other four main competitors to see how they would perform throughout the day. Ian Mullarkey, R Jones and G Duffy could have forced a shoot off by posting a perfect 100/300 and if Steve Linley repeated his performance of the previous day - he would walk away the outright winner.
Steve Linley dropped a full target and a total of 6 points on his first line, which put him out of contention for high gun straight away on the Sunday. G Duffy dropped 8 points over his 100 targets missing two full birds and having two second barrels and as such was also out of the running for high gun. R Jones dropped seven points on his first line and a further 8 points on his last 75 birds, so was also out of the running for high gun.
Ian Mullarkey repeated his excellent score from the previous day to post a combined score of 200/598, one point behind John Stafford - but this would still give him first place in AA class - well done Ian. Austin Coxhead posted a perfect 100/300 on the Sunday to push him into 3rd position overall (and 2nd in AA). Mike Merrington presents the cash prizes to Ian Mullarkey and Austin Coxhead below:
It was therefore John Stafford who was to take the overall high gun by posting a total of 200/599 - well done John - incredible shooting. Here is John receiving his £500 prize from Mike Merrington:
Congratulations to English junior Alex Sikorski who was crowned junior champion with a score of 199/589, he is pictured below with Mike Merrington.
Ladies champion was English shooter Andrea Swatts who shot 197/583 and is pictured below receiving her prize from Mike Merrington.
Close behind in the ladies category was our very own Welsh ladies international who travelled up from South Wales for this event - Lynn Turpin who scored 197/581 and was runner up.
The Veteran's section was dominated by two North Wales shooters who are Llandegla regulars. Peter Jones posted 198/587 to take the overall Veterans title, closely followed by his friend and veteran Welsh team mate Eric Davies who posted a score of 197/586. No pictures of Peter we are afraid because he went home for his Sunday dinner, but here is one of his friend and Veteran runner up - Eric Davies:
There are other notable Welsh successes that we must mention. Alan Davies (another Llandegla regular) took second place in A class with 200/590, but was also the top Welsh scorer over the two day competition - coming 10th out of over 100 competitors - well done Alan.
Other Welsh shooters who featured in class winnings were RC Lewis, DN Jones, WJ Spence and AJ Williams.
Mike Merrington was pleased with the support for this event and has said that a similar event will be scheduled in Spring 2010 - so keep your eyes on the Llandegla website:

DTL Welsh County Final
We are pleased to inform our members that the 2009 DTL Welsh County Final report is now published and can be viewed here:
Mid Wales Shooting Centre - Saturday October 10th - Trap Shooting Fault Finding Day
After a number of requests during the Welsh County DTL final Phil Morgan has decided to do another trap shooting fault finding session this Saturday (10th October) at short notice. Many people said during the DTL county final that they had missed the previous one a couple of weeks ago, so this now gives them the chance to attend again.
Once again - Phil kindly gives up his time for free, you simply pay the ground for the clays that are used.
For more details email Phil on the following address:
World DTL Championships - South Africa 2010
Many thanks to DTL Executive Gareth Wyn Evans who decided to raise funds for the Welsh team for the forthcoming DTL championships in South Africa in early 2010. He single handedly run a double rise competition at the DTL Welsh County Final and not only managed to raise over £170 for the cause - but also paid out £50 in prize money to the winners Phil Morgan and Geoff Seabourne (the only perfect tens of the day).
There is plenty of time until the championship to hold more raffles and pool shoots, so if anybody else would like to raise any money for the team or if any sponsors are interested in contributing, all funds would be gratefully received.
If you would like anymore information on running your own fund raising event or sponsoring the team, please feel free to contact Gareth who is listed on the contacts page. You can also email him on gwe@dcmail.com
**Update**
Gareth has passed on a message and said he would like to thank all the people who took part on the double rise fund raiser during the Welsh DTL county Final which made it such a success.

Breaking News - DTL Welsh County Final - Mid Wales Shooting Centre - 4th October 2009
Congratulations to the Clwyd Senior Team who have now won the Welsh DTL County final three years in row. Also a big congratulations to Ann Butler of Mid Glamorgan, she has also won the individual overall ladies title three years in a row also.
Well done to Ifor Williams from Gwynedd who was the only shooter to post a perfect score in this county final and as such was deservedly crowned 2009 Welsh DTL Counties Champion.
Congratulations to all the other winners too, we won't spoil the surprise - the rest of the results (and photographs) will be published in a full report later in the week.
ABT Welsh County Final
We are pleased to inform our members that the 2009 ABT Welsh County Final report is now published and can be viewed here:
CSF ED Championships 2009 - Isle of Man - 26th and 27th September 2009
The CSF ED Championships were this year hosted by the Isle of Man over the weekend of 26/27th September. Wales had entered teams in all 3 disciplines this year and also Ladies Trap.
The medals were not slow in coming, with the Double Trap pairing of Jonathan Davis and Nick Lyons securing a Team Bronze on the Friday afternoon. Nick also made the made the flash final and finished a creditable 5th against some England and GB shooters.
All the other competitions began on Saturday, with early promise from Jonathan Davis and Ian Belcher in the OT topping the list at the end of the first 75. The ladies trap saw both Cheryl Gizzi and Jackie Lewis make the flash final and put up a strong challenge to secure a bronze in the pairs. Not a bad result considering that Cheryl fell awkwardly some 4 weeks ago and fractured the radius bone in her arm. Well done girls.
The skeet saw Tony Grove ending the first day in joint 3rd position with a 69ex75 followed closely by Steve Taylor, in his first CSF one behind on 68. Sunday proved to be a tricky day with the dull conditions and wind affecting the skeet more than the trap. Richard Stepney completed his 50 scoring 45 with Tony one behind on 44. This was enough to secure them the Bronze medal in the pairs competition and a place in the final for Tony. In very tricky conditions Tony shot an excellent 23 to take individual bronze behind Clive Ferrugia of Malta and Gary Taylor Taylor from England.
All in all a successful weekends competition for Team Wales. Many congratulations to all of them.
