Stuart Manwaring led Wales to a credible 3rd place again this year with a 487 in the home international skeet competition last weekend, coming runners up to N. Ireland (492) and the eventual winners England showing their dominance in this sport again, with a 496 ex 500.
Ireland were 4th with 486, followed by Scotland 483, Isle of Mann 459 and Jersey 451.
The Ladies also came in 3rd behind England and winners Scotland. Veterans were 5th behind the 2 Irish teams, Scotland and winners England. Juniors were 4th behind Scotland, England and winners N. Ireland.
Well done to the new caps, especially the 2 late call ups - Deena Griffiths for the ladies and the 2 seniors Gareth Irving and Lloyd Morris, who both put in counting scores in their first International with 97 and 96 respectfully.
There was an exciting 3 way shoot off for the senior Welsh High Gun, all on 98, which was eventually won by Bryan Phillips with runner up Alun Evans and John Thomas 3rd who could not quite find his recent 100 straight form on the day. (We’ll all still regard him as “3 Ton Thomas” though!!)
Congratulations to new cap Deena Griffiths on winning the Welsh Ladies high gun, Tim Hardaker for Welsh Vets high gun, and to Rhys Evans who retains his title as Welsh Junior high gun putting in a terrific 98. Watch out next year seniors though as this was the last year Rhys could compete as a junior !
Welsh team trophy winners are shown below:
All was not quite lost as far as the international silverware goes though as Wales did pick up one international trophy thanks to Mel Jones putting in a personal best of 98 + 24 after a shoot off with the Ireland manager on 98 + 23 to fetch home the Managers Cup to Wales for the first time. Well done me !!
A fantastic venue and brilliant hospitality ensured everyone who attended had a great weekend and thanks has been conveyed to James McKeown and Stephen Fletcher at Carnview for their hard work.
Regards
Mel Jones - 2007 Welsh National Skeet Team Manager
