2009 National Skeet County Final

The 2009 National Skeet County Final was held at Mid Wales Shooting Ground on April 5th.

Yet again, Mid Wales Shooting Centre managed to book near perfect weather for this years Inter-Counties Skeet Final. Although a little chilly and with the odd gust of wind, the sun made for an enjoyable day for the six Counties who turned up to do battle.  Here are a few pictures from around the ground during the skeet final:

By the end of the first 50, it was obvious to see that some of the shooters were there for business!  Dyfed were determined to retain their title and Lloyd Morris started to put it together with a straight in the first round along with Richard Jones from Powys and Tom Hayes form Clwyd but by the end of the 50 it was Chris Ingram form Gwent who was ahead with 49ex50.  Very close behind him though were a bevy of shooters all queuing up to take that Senior High Gun title.  All on 48ex50 were Alan Parkin, Alan Jones, Lloyd Handley, Dai Rees, Gareth Irving, Lloyd Morris, Gareth Jones, Mike Lewis, Tom Hayes and two Juniors - Gareth Walters and James Richards. So things were very tight!

An up and coming young shooter was Jac Williams from Clwyd who was shooting in the colts class, a new class that was introduced to encourage young shooters, and he was keeping up nicely with the seniors (and in some cases beating them!) and scoring 46ex50 at the half way stage.

Carol Francis's campaign for the Ladies title was looking good and after 50 she was on 47.

In the Veterans, it was Tom Hayes, Alan Parkin and Dai Rees all tying at the halfway stage on 48ex50 but Dai's last round put him out of the running for Veterans High Gun, which let Del Davies into a three way shoot-off with Tom and Alan, all on 94. When Del and Alan dropped high two, it was a smooth run for Tom who went onto straight the round, giving him the Veterans High Gun title for the 3rd year running. Tom was also giving Lloyd Morris a run for the Captains cup as well but Lloyd just managed to hold it together and finished just one clay ahead on 95.

Carol Francis maintained her lead over the other ladies and finished 5 clays ahead of her team mate (Deena Griffiths), on a 92 giving Carol the Ladies title for the second year.

The Juniors have come on in leaps and bounds with their skeet shooting, none more so than Gareth Walters who finished on a 97 for the Junior title which also matched the Senior High Gun of the day (Chris Ingram, from Gwent) so pretty spectacular shooting Gareth, well done to the both of you.

Jac Williams from Clwyd became the first Colt to take the new trophy back home and he did with pride after finishing on a 93! Thats only 1 clay behind the Vets and only 4 behind the Senior High Gun so well done Jac!

But at the end of the day, Dyfed had retained their title but the gap is closing Dyfed!  Dyfed last year were 29 clays ahead of their rival Powys, this year its down to 16! Watch out boys!

Many thanks again go to the Williams family and ground staff and referees for all their hard work and also to the Co-ordinators who without them we wouldn't have County teams. Congratulations to all the 'new caps' and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.
