2010 National Skeet County Final
The 2010 National Skeet County Final was held at Mid Wales Shooting Ground on April 4th.
Considering the weather that the country was having, things did not look very good for the 2010 Inter-counties Skeet Final at Mid Wales on the 4th April. But someone was obviously looking down on Gods Country and gave us a fine, dry (but chilly) day with a touch of wind just to make the targets more interesting.
One of the best turnouts for this event with 99 shooters turning up and a warm welcome awaited them.
The first four squads were out by 9.30 and saw just Ian Modinos from Clwyd post the first 25 straight. Gwents second squad saw John Thomas, Shaun Clifford and Lyndsey Williams all put in fine performances straightening their first 25 on the trickier layout D.
Newcomer to County skeet was Julian Morris, shooting for Powys, who was obviously getting to grips with the targets and at the 50 stage was straight and didn't look like missing anything. Only time would tell ! Keith Hill from Gwynedd was almost keeping pace with him, having just dropped the one target from the first round and was on a 49. Four shooters from Dyfed, Aled Jones, Gareth Jones, Meredith Owens and Rob Scale were also hot on the heels of Julian all scoring 49ex50. Huw Evans and Dai Francis were up there also putting the pressure on again with the same score, 49ex50.
By the 75 stage, shooters were struggling to keep up with Julian's superb shooting. The only two left in the frame were Huw Evans from Clwyd and Gareth Jones from Dyfed both dropping just the one target each. Watching Julian shoot his final 25 was a pleasure to watch, more so because this young man had only really shot the odd 25 straights whilst shooting All Round competitions and had never even shot a 100 skeet competition before. There were a couple of hair raising moments and gasps during his last round especially with the low bird on the pair on stand four giving himself and the spectators a bit of a fright with the smallest of chips! Who says size matters!! And there he was, calling for his option bird on 7 for his first 100 straight. No chips there, just one very relieved and overjoyed shooter doing what a lot of those skeet shooters strive for...their first 100 straight! Very well done Julian, may there be many more to come. And what a stage to bring off such success as he takes away the title of 2010 Welsh Inter-Counties National Skeet High Gun Champion.
But there was still other competitions on the go and although Huw Evans was unable to keep up with Julian, his 98 was enough to take the Captains cup back to Clwyd.
We might have to rename the Ladies cup and call it the Carol Francis Cup as for the 4th year running, Carol took it back to Dyfed. Well done Carol.
The Junior cup may have changed names but it still went back to West Glamorgan, but this time with Natalie Davies. She had to fight for it though! Having finished on 90 both herself and James Richards from Dyfed went into a shoot-off. Natalie's experience won her the day though, just dropping one target on stand 4 to win the Junior title.
Veteran shooter Llew David, who was profiled recently on the web site, can still show those youngsters a thing or two. He put in a great performance and obviously being the last squad out in the day didn't tire him as he finished on a great 93 just piping Alan Parkin by one clay!
Another newcomer to the skeet scene this year, was colt shooter Ben Llewellin from Dyfed. This was his first season and although he started a little bit shaky, he certainly got into his stride and he posted a great 48 in his last 50 giving him an 88 to finish and take the Colt trophy. Well done Ben and we hope to see you shooting some more skeet where you've obviously got an eye for it.
With the individual trophies sorted, it came down to the overall winning County. This year the gap got less again and only just by 7 clays, Dyfed retained their title for the fourth year! Well done boys but you don't want to be resting on your laurels.
Many thanks go
to Mid Wales Shooting Centre for providing the ground staff, refs and
catering and also to the ladies in the office. You made everyone feel so
welcome as usual.
