May 2010 Shooter Profile - Welsh Sporting Shooter - Dorian Evans
This is the thirteenth shooter profile and this month we have a top Welsh international sporting shooter - Dorian Evans. If you search through some of the archived sporting and all-round reports for our Welsh counties shoots - you won't go far before encountering Dorian's name. Also a very successful international shooter, we present to Dorian our shooter profile questions. So it's over to Dorian to see his responses:
Question 1. What disciplines do you shoot?
Dorian>> I shoot Sporting and FITASC, but do enjoy All-round when I get chance to shoot it. I have also shot a little DTL, ABT and Skeet.
Question 2. What type of gun are you using?
Dorian>> My current gun is a berretta DT 10L with 32 inch barrels but I
started clay shooting with a Browning XS.
Question 3. Is there a specific ammunition you favour or tend to use?
Dorian>> I use ELEY VIP 7.5 for most of my shooting and ELEY VIP FITASC 6.5 for the real long targets, both these shells are smooth through my gun and seem to throw good consistent patterns.
Question 4. What's your background in shooting, when did you start, where did you start?
Dorian>> I have been shooting since I was 18 were on the weekends I
would go rough shooting with my mate Lyndon Bateman, this led us to going to a
charity clay shoot in Brecon where I met a lad called Ashley Keylock a keen clay
shooter who invited us to sporting shooting at Dinmore near Hereford. That
was it, I was hooked. In 2002 I started to use my local ground Woodland Park
were the owner John Butland brought my shooting up to a better standard, so it
was off to South Wales 2000 for my first registered 100 bird Sporting shoot,
what an eye opener I scored 67. High gun was 91 - M Myers, now that seemed
impossible!
Question 5. List of your achievements to date?
Dorian>> I have shot and been captain for Powys in
skeet, sporting and All-round. I won the skeet county final in 2007 with a
99/100 and the county All-round final in 2009 with 95/100. I have also
represented Wales in FITASC, and for the last three years in Sporting, this year
being captain.
Question 6. Most memorable shoot/performance?
Dorian>> Winning the skeet county final in 2007 were myself and Pete
Humphreys had both shot 99/100 and both Powys shooters a shoot off was in order
to get a winner. We both went 22/25 in the shoot off so it was off to the
middle peg where we had to shoot pairs sudden death, we went 6 pairs Pete
dropped 1, as the old saying goes whooped him.
Question 7. Who are your close shooting friends?
Dorian>> Muffer (Terry Merrick), John Kendall, Doug Livsey Rebecca
Farrington (she keeps an eye on us) they are all good shots which
help to keep the standard of shooting up and very competitive.
Question 8. Influences, coaches or people who've helped your shooting?
Dorian>> I am mostly self taught but Steve Nutbeam (coach) has
really turned my shooting around in the last 12 months helping me with problem
targets and Jonathon Williams Mid Wales shooting ground with sponsorship help.
Question 9. Top tip for your chosen discipline?
Dorian>> Always keep your eyes on the target and enjoy yourself.
Question 11. What are "your personal ambitions and goals" within shooting for the foreseeable future ?
Dorian>> Keep winning!
Thanks Dorian for another very interesting shooter profile.
We all wish you the very best for the future and hope you continue with your winning ways.
Team Clothing Information
Ann Snelgrove (the secretary) is now holding a new stock of re-designed shooting vests and also a smaller stock of mesh vests for Welsh Team members which now have Cymru Wales on the back (as agreed by the Board). These are supplied by Top Gun clothing, a British registered company.
If you want to reserve a new vest to replace your tired old Welsh vest or fancy a mesh vest for shooting in the summer heat, contact Ann Snelgrove on the the contacts page for more details.
4th DTL Welsh International Qualifier - South Wales 2000 - 24th May 2010
This was the fourth DTL welsh qualifier of 2010 and the second this year to be held at South Wales 2000. With this being the second qualifier here at South Wales 2000 for 2010, it meant this event would also be the South Wales DTL championships - with a nice silver trophy going to the overall high gun of the day.
Weather was kind on the last DTL qualifier held here this year, but this time around we were in for a very special treat - bright sunshine all weekend and very still conditions.
Saturday saw a few travelling shooters arrive for some practice and to sample some of Sians delightful food.
As we all know, Will Palmer and Ian Jones have given the DTL shooters great support this year by being available at every qualifier for any issues you shooters may have, as a result - with them being present all the time they have also found themselves photographed quite a lot. I was approached by a number of shooters during this fourth qualifier who complained that even though Will Palmer was always jumping in front of the camera, they missed him not being present in the last report (something about his pictures being useful stopping their dogs barking). Anyway, your wish is my command - here he is alongside some of his shooting friends....
Back to the shoot and Sunday saw a disappointing early turnout, but this soon became clear that it was because people had decided to enjoy the weather and aim to shoot in the afternoon - this became especially apparent after the first squads went out because the car park filled up very rapidly with shooters wanting to shoot the next wave.
After the first few squads came in, it was quite obvious that the still bright conditions were suiting some with a high score from RT Millichamp being posted on the board with 99/295 after missing only one full bird on his first line. North Wales shooter EL Davies had shot on the same squad and posted a score of 99/292 after missing his very first bird out.
Top Welsh lady shooter Ann Butler finished with some of the early squads and posted 98/294, which would also give her joint first place in A class later on in the day when the prizes were presented.
As the day progressed some impressive scores were appearing on the board with quite a lot of red marker pen being used to display them !
North Wales shooter RM Faulkner made an amazing comeback after also missing his very first bird out and recovered by posting a score of 99/295 ! GO Howells posted an impressive score of 99/295, with AJ Poole not far behind posting 99/294. GW Evans, GR Beagan and B Jones all posted 99/293. Well done all !
Phil Morgan's young student/junior Arren Jones posted an impressive 97/286.
Speaking of Magic Morgan, what was he up to on this fine sunny day........
Phil focused himself for the job in hand and proceeded to post up 25/75 one after another until he reached the remarkable perfect score of 100/300 here on his home ground. Most people were amazed to hear that nobody had done one here before and Mike Amodeo did a very moving speech which congratulated Phil and handed over a £100 bonus which he had kept for the person shooting the first ever DTL perfect score here at his ground. To add to this, it meant that Phil was crowned South Wales champion again after being high gun of the day. Phil is now also zero points on count-back after the first four shoots, meaning that even if he didn't shoot any more qualifiers his team place would be guaranteed.
Well done to all the shooters, we are half way there, so keep your eyes on the scores that Brian Davies posts up for the team places as things tend to change rapidly on the last few shoots.
Thanks to Mike and all his staff for some excellent targets, food and hospitality.
Thanks also again to Ian Jones (DTL Exec) and Will Palmer (DTL Team Manager) who were there again for the support of the shooters.
The final four qualifiers are in Mid Wales Shooting Centre, with the last two being part of the Welsh Grand Prix (2 day). The next immediate Welsh DTL qualifier at Mid Wales is on the 6th June, see you there !

100 DTL Report - Bisley
A posse of 4 Welsh shooters converged on Bisley to take part in the 100 D.T.L. that was taking place. Phil Morgan and his young student Arren Jones were out to prove that the Welsh actually can shoot !
Straight to the action and at the 50 stage Phil was tying with local shooter John Malden and young Arren was hot on there heels with a 146.
Into the 75 and Malden was first in with his 75 x 225, Morgan was soon to follow matching Malden's score and Arren dropped another point with 75 x 220.
The last round would be tricky with ever changing light and a gusting wind. Malden started first, followed by Arren Jones and finally Morgan would hit the range last out of this trio for his final round.
Arren going for his second ever 100 straight faulted in the last 10 by missing a target, seeing his score end 99 x 292 an excellent score! More heart ache would follow as Morgan barrelled his 99th for the Magic 300 thus finishing the day 100 x 299. The small crowd that had gathered to watch quickly told of Malden's plight as he had missed and barrelled a target to end 99 x 296. This would mean Morgan would take the High Gun prize. Arren Jones took the spoils in B class with his effort.
Many thanks to Bisley Gun Club for a warm welcome and a great days shooting.

National Skeet Team Qualifier Shoots 3 & 4 - Mid Wales - 8th and 9th May 2010
A cold wind reduced the temperature on the
day of the first shoot of the two, over the weekend. However the
temperature of the shooting and the score board was getting hotter!
The high gun of the Saturday with a 98 went to Lloyd Morris, clearly
back on form with 98 smashed clays, letting just two slip past his
F3. Picking up just one point Mr. Scale and Mr. Ingram with 97, well
shot to both of you.
The ladies saw Deena Griffiths out in front with a 91. J Richards on
95 taking the high gun for the juniors, and Alan Parking high gun
for the veterans with 95.
John Thomas's 100 Straight
Sundays shoot saw John Thomas produce a perfect score, 100 targets! John later told me this is number
seven, perfect 100s he has
produced during his shooting career. To shoot a 100 straight
is not only
a demonstration of amazing marksmanship, but immense mental strength,
especially considering that John had only just purchased a new
Krieghoff from Mid Wales Shooting Centre the previous day (when he
shot 96) and this was only its second time of being used ! Very
well done John.
Close behind John was Huw Evans, who shot 98 along with Chris Ingram.
Juniors saw Ben Llewellin and Andrew Davey draw with 93 each. Carol
Francis led the ladies on a 90, and Alan Parkin high gun for the
veterans with a 97.
The scores are on the board and are there for all to ponder over,
however there are still four shoots left. Rumour has it there are
still some big West Wales shooters yet to enter the competition!
I would like, on behalf of all who attended thank Arthur his family
and staff for the weekend, great targets, hospitality and food.

3rd DTL Welsh International Qualifier - Mid Wales Shooting Centre - 9th May 2010
This was the third DTL welsh qualifier of 2010 and the second this year to be held at Mid Wales Shooting Centre. Saturday saw an unusual twist with the weather, with overcast conditions and cold temperatures with sharp winds - everybody therefore hoped this would get better for the Sunday. Sunday arrived and a bright sunny day greeted everybody, however the temperatures were still cold when out of the sunshine and some very interesting changes in wind throughout the day would certainly make more challenging targets.
The targets were checked by the jury and the first squads rolled out.
One of the results from the first wave of squads was almost a mirror image of the first DTL qualifier held here at Mid Wales this year, because North Wales shooter Wayne Cliffton posted 100x292 as he did in the previous qualifier, but he was not to be the leading Welsh shooter at this early stage this time around as his fellow squad member - the ever consistent Glyn Jenkins had posted a 99x293. One English shooter though had created the yardstick for the day at this early stage in the form of S Smith (AA) who posted 99x295 on squad 6.
Conditions can often change for the better in the afternoon as the sun gets high in the sky, but not this time around - some people even said winds had increased slightly. All eyes went to the next wave of squads to see how they would perform.
It was good see one of our popular DTL shooters back at the qualifier's, Ifor Williams was present and his return also brought with him a score of 99x293.
Phil Morgan and David Baugh weren't having an easy time either, but their years of experience shined through and they both dug in and produced very impressive performances scoring 99x294 each and were to be joint Welsh high scorers of the day, which in turn gave them zero points for count-back on this shoot.
English shooter RJ Haines was to come in on squad 18 with an incredible 99x297 - which would give him high gun of the day.
Two Welsh juniors certainly made their mark at this qualifier shoot. GL Roberts posted a score of 99x292 with A Jones close behind on 98x291 - both of these young shooters shot extremely well and would have been just as well placed for senior team qualification !
Top scoring Welsh ladies of the day were LM Turpin with 92x271 and DM Griffiths with 91x270. Top scoring Welsh Veteran was JH Thomas with 97x287, followed by E Roberts who scored 96x286.
Thanks as always to the Williams family and helpers at Mid Wales Shooting Centre for their hospitality and another excellent qualifier event. Thanks also to the catering staff for all the excellent food.
A big thank you also goes out to Ian Jones (the new DTL executive) and Will Palmer (DTL Team manager) who have made sure they have attended all of the qualifiers this year (regardless of the travelling involved) to give that extra level of support to the shooters. Ian's efforts this time around in producing the free DTL report displaying the previous scores and containing the information about the European qualification was welcomed by all the DTL shooters.

WCTSA Vacancies
A number of vacancies for discipline representatives (executive status) still exist on the vacancies page:
The executive board have suggested that if it makes it more appealing to prospective applicants, they would consider alternating meetings between North and South Wales and thus encouraging applicants from these areas to apply (who may otherwise have been put-off by the travelling involved for the mid-week meetings).
The executives would like to hear your feedback about this proposition and as such if you have any comments please forward them to the secretary so that she can report back to the executives.

Britannia Grand Prix - Southern Counties - 30th April to 2nd May 2010
Two Welsh Juniors continued their winning ways at the Britannia
Olympic Skeet GP held at Southern Counties last weekend. With the
event attracting entries from the Netherlands, Germany and Canada
due to its closeness to the World Cup next week, both performances
were excellent.
Rhys Price, fresh from his Mid Wales triumph the previous week with
an amazing 119 ex 125 continued where he left off with a creditable
114 ex 125, putting him in the final along with 4 regular GB Juniors
and the Dutch junior champion Moorlaag. Not to be outdone Rhys
fought his way to joint 3rd after 25 clays and faced a sudden death
peg 4 shoot off. Going last of 3 he broke both clays to clinch the
bronze medal.
In the Ladies competition meanwhile, Cerys Evans was again fairing
well against the opposition, finishing the 125 in second position
behind Sarah Gray. The positions remained the same following the
final, with Sarah taking Gold, Cerys the Silver and Nicky Brocklesby
the Bronze medals.
Next in Cerys' hectic shooting calendar this year will be the Suhl
Junior International in Germany in Mid May followed by the European
Championships in Kazan, Russia in June, her first GB cap and the
World Championships in Munich in August.
Cerys will be in good company on these events, in the form of
Malcolm and Elena Allen, and hopefully Scott Morgan in the Trap
category. We wish them all the best of luck for the competitions.

The event is a 50 bird sporting re-entry and is open to non BASC members. The cost is £15 for seniors and £10 for juniors per entry.
You must use a proper .410 gun at this event as barrel tubes are not allowed, however there will be many on hand that can be used on the day.
For more details contact the organiser Meurig Rees on 01239 851631 or email him at meurig.rees@basc.org.uk
P.S. If there are any Welsh sporting shooters out there that are interested, remember you could walk away with a world championship title under you belt after this !
Welsh ABT Team Qualifier and Gwynn Rogers Memorial Shoot - South Wales 2000 - 2nd May 2010
Cold and windy conditions greeted 43 shooters
attending the second Welsh ABT selection shoot of the season. This shoot was
also being held as the Gwynn Rogers memorial, so it was fitting to
see a few English shooters turn up, to remember the ace trap shooter
that was Gwynn Rogers.
Targets were checked by the jury at 9.30, and it was easy to see
that if you did not have your wits about you the wind could cause a
few problems. All entrants booked in by 10am, shooting got
underway at 10.15am.
After the first round had been shot by all, only one 25 straight was on the board, none other than Phil Morgan, with only a couple of shooters managing 23's and 22's, the weather seemed to be having an effect on the majority of the field.
At the 50 stage Phil was still leading by three targets on 48 being
chased by 4 shooters R Toms, Pete Cole, Jason Shannon and Paul Lampard, all on 45, with Nigel Hawyes,
John Campbell, Rob Parry, Alan Williams and Phil Dando one target further adrift on 44.
Throughout the day the wind did not ease and ever changing light
conditions made targets difficult to pick up at times, this was evident
on the scoreboard with only 2 straights on it after 75 targets, the
second being shot by the ever young Neil Jones.
By three o'clock all 8 squads had finished and for the second year on
the trot with a fantastic score of 96, Phil Morgan was not to
outshone by any of his adversary's, his nearest rivals being J
Shannon on 92 and P Cole on 91. Good to see N Hawyes and R Harrison
both shoot there last lines straight bolstering there scores to a
very credible 90 and 88 respectively.
All that was left was the prize giving and it was fitting to see Paul Rogers along with wife and daughters picking raffle tickets for numerous prizes donated for the occasion. Total monies raised by the raffle was £191 with the very generous Mike and Margeret Amodeo making it up to £300, all money going to a good cause - prostate cancer research, which I know Gwynn would have been very proud of !
A big thanks goes out to Mike Amodeo for sticking with his decision to use 4 layouts and I must say the targets were spot on.
Thanks to ALL the guys and girls on the ground who as usual work very hard to keep everything running as smoothly as possible and to the loveable Sian in the club house, without you dear the atmosphere would not be the same.
Next selection is at Mid Wales on June 20th, it would be good to see as many faces there again.

A Party Political Broadcast by the "Welsh DTL Team for more
trophies party !!!"
Its that time of the year - elections! We thought we would lighten things up a bit and would like to present to you a candidate for a new party - "more trophies for the Welsh DTL Team". Their candidate being none other than Phil Morgan.
So it's over to Phil:
"Shooters it's 2 qualifier shoots down with 6 to go ! The Home International is at Scotland and the targets you have been presented with and shot at over the passed 2 selection's are an indication of what we will be shooting at this years International.
Last year you people made me the proudest Captain ever by achieving what we did as a team last year taking runners up position in every category brilliant. Now we need to take things to the next level. I have shot with you people for a number of years and can see that as a shooting team we can beat anyone. Individually we have all shot high scores to win different titles on the day.
Yes it is a hobby and you spend your own money to take part, but you have to look at yourselves each and everyone of you that it is only you and the clay. It's not about beating the Phil Morgan's, Chaplow's or McKeown's of this world - because if you shoot all your targets then these guys have to shoot all theirs to have a chance of beating you !
So come on lets up our game as individuals and enjoy it. I can remember Wales winning the Home International in 1992, I think we can win it in Scotland so lets give it a bash what you think?"
By: Phil Morgan and the "more trophies for the Welsh DTL Team" party.

2nd DTL Welsh International Qualifier -
South Wales 2000 - 25th April 2010
This was the second Welsh DTL qualifier and the first of two held in South Wales 2000 this year.
South Wales 2000 is the home ground of Phil Morgan and after his recent perfect 100 single barrels kills at Southern Counties which give him his first championship title of 2010 "English Single Barrel Champion", he was always going to be the man to beat on home soil ! He's won every high gun at the DTL qualifiers held here since 2006 and won countless qualifiers before this date !
Turnout for this shoot was very good (76 shooters) and due to the kind weather on the Saturday, many shooters from Mid and North Wales travelled down to South Wales 2000 on the Sunday.
RM (Rodger) Faulkner from North Wales had made the journey down and was only one point down on count back after the last qualifier - could he be the man to put the pressure on Morgan ?
The weather for the day was quite changeable - bright sunshine one minute and then overcast the next. The good news was that except for the odd drizzle shower, it remained dry and the wind wasn't too strong. The clays were flying true and it was game on here at the second qualifier.
It was clear from looking at the final positions on the scoreboard that some had found their mark with the clays from the outset. On the first 50, PR Morgan, AG Dore and GO Howells all shared 50x149. Close behind was PT Pritchard on 50x148 and RT Millichamp 50x147. RD Parry and AJ Poole both scored 50x146 whilst JTD Howells, DR Lea, APM Vaughan & APS Jones shared 50x145.
As we all know, it not over until its over and the last 50 would sort everybody out.
Some remained at the top of the leader-board at the 100 stage and others disappeared down the list.
Phil Morgan was again to continue his unbeaten run here since 2006 after only dropping one more barrel on his last 50, which give him an incredible 100x298 and more importantly zero points again on count back on his second qualifier !
The closest scores to Phil Morgan's were Welsh shooters RT Millichamp (99x293) and GO Howells (98x293), with English shooter AG Dore also scoring 293 (99). E Roberts shot a brilliant second half (50x150) to end with a 98x292. Close behind were three shooters who all shot 291 - these were PT Pritchard, RD Parry and JTD Howells.
The person only a single point on count back behind Morgan after the first qualifier - North Wales shooter RM Faulkner, come in with a very respectable 98x287 after only dropping two points on his last 50 birds (although 11 points on count-back from Morgan on the day). But there was a bonus for Rodger, he could go home in the knowledge that his hair and eyebrows were still intact after locking himself in the car for a quick sleep in-case his travelling friend Jim Spence shaved them off whilst asleep!
Welsh ladies top scores of note was AE Butler who posted 94x280 and G Morgan who posted 92x270. Welsh juniors high scorers were AE Biddulph 96 x 283 and A Jones 94x275. Welsh Veterans high scorers were E Roberts 98 x 292 and EL Davies 97 x 289.

It was good to see Deena Griffiths trying these qualifiers along with the regular ladies, but can we also highlight to people that there are very few lady members trying for qualification this year - so if you've always fancied trying the qualifiers, why not give it a go and support the ladies efforts this year !
Thanks to Mike and all his helpers for some excellent hospitality and shooting, the next DTL qualifier at SW2000 is 23rd May, hope to see you all there.
In the mean time, the very next immediate Welsh DTL qualifier will be held in Mid Wales on 9th May, best of luck everyone.
