Sion>> My hopes for the future of the sport is to see clay shooting receiving a higher profile in the media.
Many thanks for taking the time to answer the questions Sion, I'm sure our readers will enjoy reading this article.
Sion was only 14 at the time of winning the counties sporting Colts High Gun title this year and it remarkable to think of what the future can hold for such a talented young man.
The skills, determination and the image Sion projects of a modern day young shooter make him a true role model for fellow young Welsh shooters.
Keep your eyes out for this name in the future, I'm sure it won't be long before he's wearing a Welsh team vest and collecting even more silverware.
Sion - we all wish you every success as you continue to master your chosen shooting disciplines over the coming years.
Former DTL international - Dennis Evans (Sion's dad) has commented how he thinks the county qualifiers/finals are an excellent starting block for a keen young shooter.
It would be nice to see some more Colts and Juniors entering
these county competitions, so maybe some
more Mums and Dads could encourage their boys or girls to come along and try
the qualifiers - young people are after-all the future of our sport !
South Wales 2000 - Fourth DTL Welsh Qualifier - Sunday 17th May 2009
73 shooters turned out (with a few cancelling on the day due to a few road accidents and bad weather that prevented people making the journey).
Down to the shooting......
The early starters were led by none other than Phil Morgan scoring 50 x 148 on his home ground, followed closely by Dai Ricketts who was also 50 straight but a few more barrels than Morgan. There were also a few more with only a handful of points away at this stage but with the weather not giving up it made the shooting more difficult as the day progressed, with heavy downpours of rain and gusting winds.
So after the the first wave of competitors had finished, it was Morgan out in front at this early stage finishing on a 100 x 296. What was incredible was that the next closest shooter was Baz Owen on a 288 some "8 points behind him" - surely this would ruin the count-back hopes for everybody else in this bad weather ?
With the afternoon shooters still to go a 296 seemed to be unbeatable but there were still some good shooters to shoot. Phil waited and as news filtered round the club house that so many shooters had dropped points on there first and second rounds felt confident that he could be crowded High Gun again.
At the end it was Phil Morgan who took High Gun and 0 points on count-back again to make it 3 wins out of his 4 for the South Wales man. One more win could surely see him take number one spot in the team for the fourth coming International and if he shoots another winning score he will break the record books and be the first shooter to have zero count-back on "all his qualifying scores" since count-back began - they would be impressive stats to say the least.
Other notebable scores were Lyn Turpin and Gail Morgan who were on the same score of 269 and were the top scoring ladies shooters for the day and Aarron Jones a junior shooter scoring a 273 to become a joint 1st winner in B class.
Well done and thanks to all that attended, even though Magic Morgan's incredible scoring might mean some scores will not be useful for the final team on count-back.
Four shoots in now and this is where things get interesting as people try to improve on previous shoots and post higher scores as we get a feel for who will be our 2009 DTL Welsh Internationals.......watch this space.

Our twice times British Open DTL Champion Phil Morgan would like to thank all those who turned up at his recent DTL training/fault finding day at South Wales 2000 - of which there were over 20 people.
It's good to see somebody who has had such success in our sport giving back his time and experience back for free, to aid the development of other Welsh shooters.

SW2000 - Gwyn Rodgers Memorial Shoot Report & Welsh ABT Selection - 3rd May 2009
"THE MIGHTY GWYN"
A fantastic turnout for what was the first memorial anniversary shoot for Gwyn “the mighty Gwyn” Rogers, who sadly passed away a year ago. As many of us are aware Gwyn was a well known and regular shooter, instructor, and dear friend as well as a referee in the trap disciplines at SW 2000. His remembrance shall continue each year with this memorial competition. The competition will raise funds through raffles and donations with the proceeds donated to charity and as requested by Gwyn’s family that charity shall be Prostate Cancer Charity. This year’s amount raised was £371. The entrants were determined to be the first winner of the memorial cup and some stiff competition surely turned up. There were categories for seniors, Veterans, Ladies and juniors; sadly the latter was unsupported as most were competing abroad. However a further shoot for the juniors is to be held on the 19th of July.
The ABT Welsh selection and memorial shoot was combined and won by Phil Morgan.
Later in the clubhouse the raffle was drawn, followed by a auction for a nice shirt. Auctioneer come ground owner Mike Amodeo and rival bidder John Henry locked horns in a battle to become the proud owner of a very pricey Browning men’s shirt kindly donated by Mr & Mrs Mattravers. John finally won the battle for the shirt at a handsome £66, all for charity of course and we thank Mr John Henry for his bidding and just hope the shirt fits !
All the prizes of cartridges, medals and the memorial cup were donated by Mike & Margaret Amodeo. Mike & Margaret would like to thank all those who donated the money and raffle prizes for the Prostate Cancer Charity and came to the shoot, and of course those who could not attend but donated none the less.
See you all next year !

Counties Coordinators
Two Welsh Counties finals have already passed and various other counties qualifiers will be taking place for the last three remaining county finals for 2009. All of these events and qualifiers are dependant on the commitment and effort of your local county coordinators.
Being a county Co-ordinator is a thankless task, but without each and every one of them we would have no County Finals at all ! We also have to appreciate that many new internationals originally start through these county events, so the county coordinators are helping to nurture our future shooting stars of the future. With this in mind - we must try to appreciate all the work they put and not try to criticise them - they are the ones who have to collate the scores at the end of the shoots and send the levies and paperwork off. They are usually the last ones to leave the grounds because of this responsibility, and some of them don't even make the team at the end of the day - but their effort is unsurpassed.
So next time you shoot a county final such as this, spare a thought for your co-ordinator - tell them what a good job they do and how much you appreciate their voluntary effort.....a few simple words go a long way.
County Co-ordinators are not easy to find, so a special thank you from all our counties shooters to each and every one of you !

Shooter Profiles
We are pleased to announce that over the next few months we will be introducing a new feature to the monthly news - "Shooter Profiles". Our intention is to approach members of the WCTSA - present them with some shooting related questions and publish the results in our news section along with a few photographs. Hopefully over the months it will allow us to show more of the Welsh members some of the characters and stars in our sport.
These articles will not be purely dependant on achievements alone, so if you know of an up and coming shooter, a local character who has been shooting for many years or a shooter at the top of their game and you would like to see them featured - please forward us their contact details and we will get on the case.
A big thanks to Angie Goodman for helping to get this project off the ground which has been in the pipeline for some years.
Keep your eyes peeled this month for our first feature.
