NEWS / REPORTS MARCH 2010
March 2010 Shooter Profile - Welsh Senior Trap Shooter -
Glyn Jenkins
This is the eleventh shooter profile and this month we bring you Glyn Jenkins.
Glyn is well know on the Down the Line circuit - he is a very skilled shooter and well liked and respected by his fellow competitors. Glyn has been a Welsh DTL senior team member for a number of years and is always present in the top ranking Welsh DTL shooters in the end of year averages.
So it's over to Glyn:
Question 1. What disciplines do you shoot?
Glyn>> I only shoot DTL, I have tried sporting and skeet but I don’t enjoy them as much.
Question 2. What type of gun are you using?
Glyn>> I started shooting again in 2004 with a DT10 but had poor
results, then I changed to a Miroku MK38 Trap. The Miroku is a great gun
but I wanted a little more weight to slow me down from jumping the targets, so
now I use a Perazzi MX2000 .
Question 3. Is there a specific ammunition you favour or tend to use?
Glyn>> I like to use Eley first 7’s or 7.5’s . Great kills at a reasonable price.
Question 4. What's your background in shooting, when did you start, where did you start?
Glyn>> I started shooting in 1988 at a little shoot across
the road from the Horns of Bonningale. My first gun being a Baikal with 2
sets of barrels. In 1990 I qualified for the Shropshire DTL team but then
had to stop shooting as I had just moved into a flat. In 2004 I started
shooting again and qualified for the Welsh team.
Question 5. List of your achievements to date?
Glyn>> I have shot for the Welsh team for the last 5
years with the honour of being captain in 2008. In 2006 and
2007 I won the Shropshire DTL titles and shot as captain in 2007.
I gained a sliver medal and trophy at the European championships in
2008 with the Welsh team and at the same event was 5th
overall. I have been in the top 5 in the Welsh annual averages
for the last 5 years and top 10 in the English averages for the last
4.
Question 6. Most memorable shoot/performance?
Glyn>> Shooting for the Welsh team in France at the European
championships and also at this years Home International when we came second.
Question 7. Who are your close shooting friends?
Glyn>> I tend to shoot with Will Palmer, Gareth Evans and Sally
Morrow all good shots and great company. Big Ifor Williams always makes me
laugh !
Question 8. Influences, coaches or people who've helped your shooting?
Glyn>> I have never had any shooting lessons, but have had some
good advice from the maestro Phil Morgan. Watching people like England’s Bob
Taylor and Phil have helped with sound techniques, they are great exponents of
the art of DTL shooting .
Question 9. Top tip for your chosen discipline?
Glyn>> Concentrate on one target at a
time. You cannot concentrate for the entire round of 25 targets (at least
I cannot) – see it Shoot it !!
Question 10. What are your hopes for the future ?
Glyn>> Clay shooting is a great sport no matter which discipline you
choose. Grounds like Mid Wales provide beginners and more experienced
shots a great day out and actively encourage juniors. Juniors are the
future of the sport and should be encouraged at every opportunity. It
would be great if more funding from the Sports Council Of Wales could be gained
for the “ Grass Roots “ shooters and juniors. These are the people that
will progress to County and International level and then onto the Commonwealth
and Olympic stages, where more development can take place. ( I will get off my
soap box )
Question 11. What are "your personal ambitions and goals" within shooting for the foreseeable future ?
Glyn>> I will be trying to get into the Welsh team again in 2010, but have had to reduce my shooting on economic grounds. One of my other ambitions is to beat Mr Phil Morgan at a major event, one which is proving to be difficult !!!
Many thanks Glyn for another very interesting shooter profile.
All the best for the forthcoming season and good luck with your goals and ambitions from all here at the WCTSA.

3rd Gwynedd Skeet and Sporting Qualifiers -
Mid Wales Shooting Centre
- 14th March 2010
Ten shooters managed the trip down to Mid Wales for
Gwynedd's 3rd and final Skeet and Sporting qualifiers. A sunny day
with a cold biting wind affected the skeet in the morning, but
luckily the promised showers stayed away.
Bangor based shooter Barry Hughes could not make it as he was in
hospital with pneumonia, we wish him well and a hope he makes a
quick recovery.
Skeet
A strong wind behind the high bird made for an interesting target as
it dived towards the low house, which caused quite a few problems
for the majority of shooters.
I'm glad to say the traps worked well and there were no breakdowns
and very few no birds.
At the end of the morning it was very close between the top 5
shooters:
Ken Griffiths (me) taking the honours on a credible 47, followed by
Gwyn Richards 45, Anthony Lowe 45, Keith Hill 44, and Dennis Evans
on 43.
Team Positions for the Skeet Final:
Seniors:
1/ Gwyn Richards (Captain)
2/ Ken Griffiths (+1)
3/ Keith Hill (+4)
4/ Elgan Pugh (+5)
5/ Anthony Lowe (+8)
6/ Dennis Evans (+9)
7/ Gerallt Jones (+12)
8/ Dewi Griffiths (+28)
9/ Dafydd Jones (+32)
10/ Dave Jones (+37)Reserve/Barry Hughes (+43)

Sporting
A much harder layout than the previous qualifier left many shooters
with glum faces at the end of a long afternoon. A tricky long out
crossing pair saw a few shooters leave the stand with a zero. Rhys
Davies our junior had about 10 gun malfunctions using Keith Hill's
Semi-auto, which caused him to have a few tantrums.
Luckily the gun stayed out of the lake and I somehow think he will
stick to his over and under from now on.
Father and son Dennis and Sion Evans had a good battle to the end,
with Dennis getting his own back following an embarrassing defeat at
the last qualifier !!!
Gwynedd may not have the best shooters, but I'm glad to say the one's
we have - have a lot of heart. Half the Gwynedd shooters are clay
pigeon novices and I'm glad to say this difficult qualifier did not
put them off.
At the end of the afternoon the top 5 scores were as follows:
Keith Hill, Top Gun on 39, 2/ Ken Griffiths 38, 3/ Dennis Evans 33,
4/ Sion Evans (Colt) 32, 5/ Glyn Jones 32.
Team Positions for the Sporting Final:

Message from the Welsh DTL Team Manager
The Welsh team DTL qualifiers are approaching fast and I'm sure a lot of you have already started your training for these. For those of you that are actually trying for the DTL team this year, please remember there are places available to shoot for Wales in the European DTL championships at Southern Counties (England) in August this year (places subject to scores of course).
Those new or well worn shooters who
are not quite happy with their shooting, don't worry - there is
still time to sort things out before this years team qualifiers. Our
top Welsh trap shooter Phil Morgan and twice British Open DTL
champion will be coaching at Mid Wales Shooting Centre again on
March 13th, these are very informative days and well worth a visit.
The added bonus of these sessions are the relatively small groups
and being able to gain some "one to one" coaching with one of the
best trap shooters around.
If anyone would like more information or any other matters
concerning the DTL team please email me at
wctsadtl@googlemail.com
Good luck to everyone trying for the Welsh DTL team this year - see you April 11th !!!

2nd Gwynedd Skeet and Sporting Qualifiers - Dovey Valley
- 28 February 2010
Skeet Qualifier Report:
We arrived at Dovey Valley in glorious sunshine, with no sign of the
promised heavy rain.
After a hearty breakfast the first squad headed down to the skeet
range, whilst the other two squads shot the sporting layout.
For those of you who have shot the Skeet at Dovey Valley, you will
know that it is probably one of the most challenging layouts in the country
with a background that makes it extremely difficult to pick up and follow
the line of the bird. This reflected in the scores with most people
shooting far below their usual average.
The exception to this were Gwyn Richards and Keith Hill, who shot a
46 and 45 respectively, and the 46 was enough for Gwyn to win the
Captaincy this year following his high gun score at the first
qualifier. Well done Gwyn, now you owe us all a pint (shandy for me
of course).
Skeet top ten Scores were as follows:
Gwyn Richards 46
Keith Hill 45
Bob Carter 44
Elgan Pugh 43
Glyn Jones 42
Gerallt Jones 42
Ken Griffiths 41
Dennis Evans 41
Sion Evans 40
Anthony Lowe 40
Top 10 positions after the first 2 qualifiers are:
1. Gwyn Richards (0)
2. Keith Hill (+4)
3. Elgan Pugh (+5)
4. Ken Griffiths (+6)
5.Glyn Jones (+7)
Sporting
Qualifier
Report:
The Sporting layout was well though out, with a good mixture of
targets to test even the best shot.
50 birds over 7 stands using all the fantastic landscape that Dovey
is renowned for.
At the end, the scores reflected the testing targets with many shooters going home disappointed.
Sporting top ten scores were as follows:
Ken Griffiths 43
Keith Hill 40
Gwyn Richards 40
Glyn Jones 39
Sion Evans 35 (Colt)
Anthony Lowe 35
Elgan Pugh 30
Dewi Griffiths 30
Bob Carter 30
Joint 10th - Rhys Davies 29 (Junior) & Gerallt W Jones 29
Top 10 positions after first 2 qualifiers are:
1. Ken Griffiths (0) High Gun Both Shoots !
2. Keith Hill (+4)
3. Gwyn Richards (+9)
4. Elgan Pugh (+13)
5. Glyn Jones (+15)
6. Sion Evans (+17)
7. Dennis Evans (+22)
8. Dewi Griffiths (+26)
9. Christine Carter (+28)
10. Bob Carter (+29)

Commonwealth Shooting Championships – India - Richard
Stepney's inside report
CSF Championships Delhi February 2010.
Team Wales have recently returned from Delhi, India with an impressive medal haul, with 3 gold and 2 Bronze medals coming from the clay target section.
Elena Allen and Cerys Evans began the medal haul with a bronze position in the Ladies Skeet pairs match, narrowly losing Gold by some 5 clays from England. This was a credible performance as Cerys lost 6 clays due to her gun malfunctioning on the second round.
This only seemed to fire Cerys up as she came out all guns blazing
(no pun intended) for the individual competition the following day,
finishing the qualification rounds with a 66 ex 75 and going into
the final in 3rd place, tied with Lauryn Mark from Australia.
Elena meanwhile was having another good day at the office, having
secured a Gold medal in the previous days Badge match she continued
the individual comp with a 68 ex 75 leading the field into the flash
final, with Sian Bruce from Scotland in second place.
After a thrilling final it was Elena who emerged victorious securing
her second Gold in so many days, Sian taking Silver and Cerys
pulling away from Lauryn to gain the Bronze. Believe me it was
a real tear jerker to see two Welsh flags being hoisted up the
flagpoles at the same time.
Meanwhile, Malcolm Allen and
Julian Jeremy narrowly missed out on the Bronze pairs medal, Julian
having spent the previous 3 days quarantined in his hotel room by
Doctor Ron due to a viral infection, so a performance not to be
sniffed at.
In the individual comp Malcolm finished off with a 50 straight to
enter the flash final in 2nd place behind Khan of India with a score
of 119 ex 125. It should have been secured in the final but the
referee did not see the chip so into a sudden death shoot off where
Mal came out victorious, obviously not to be outone by his wife. The
last person to win a Gold for Wales at this level of competition
was, I believe Des Davies in 1998.
The girls also set a new record as this is the first time that medals have been won in this category by Wales.
In the trap competitions, Cheryl Gizzi and Jackie Lewis fought well
to finish 4th in the pairs competition as did Ian Parry Belcher and
young Scott Morgan.
Scott shooting his way into the single barrel final in joint 5th
place with 2 other shooters after the individual comp with a score
of 119 ex 125 where after being 3rd for a short while eventually
took 6th place after a sudden death shoot off. What makes this a
tremendous achievement on Scott's part is that the winner only
dropped 1 target during his qualification round shooting an amazing
124 ex 125.
The Virgin Atlantic staff at Delhi Airport must have been suitably
impressed with Scotties performance because they were all upgraded
to business class for the return flight last Thursday!!!!
In finishing, I would like to give my sincere thank you's to both of
the shotgun Teams for their performances in Delhi, it was a pleasure
to work with all concerned.

Section Coach
Delhi 2010 Team Wales
Commonwealth Shooting Championships – India - February 17th
- 27th 2010
A major shooting championship took place in India on February 17th –
27th 2010 -
The Commonwealth Shooting Championships. As well as being a
top class event, it was also a good preparation for
the up and coming Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi - India, later
this year.
The games covered all elements of shooting (not just clay shooting)
with Team Wales doing extremely well in the overall standings.

The following picture shows the medals Wales won from "all" shooting disciplines:
From a clay shooting perspective, the results were amazing, but we
won't spoil the surprise as a full report has been published from our eye in
the sky - Richard Stepney who was a section coach out in India for
this championship.
The results achieved by these Welsh clay shooters against such strong
international competition is incredible and the WCTSA would like to
congratulate all those who took part and thank them for their hard work and
dedication in the build up to this event. We would also like to
thank all team managers, coaches, sponsors and family members who
give the continued support to each and every one of these shooters.
Our congratulations also go out to the rest of Team Wales who were
shooting the non clay shooting disciplines - well done everybody - a
brilliant team effort !
Lets hope this success continues later in the year for the 2010
Commonwealth games - good luck to everybody and we hope the rest of
your training goes well.
Gwent County Skeet Qualifier – SW2000 - Sunday 28th February
2010
A busy day at SW2000 with the invasion by the French on Saturday,
Phil Ash and his army of sporting shooters on Sunday meant that almost
two hundred shooters were to pass through the turn styles.
Margaret and Mike had anticipated the demand on resources with the hard
working Sian, Steve, Arron and temporary staff, everything ran like
clockwork.
The weather was to be bitterly cold and not helped by substantial wind,
high scores were going to be difficult to achieve. This became
apparent after the first squad finished with no 25 straights and no
24’s.
The only straight of the day was to come from the consistent Alan Parkin,
only 3 people were to shoot 24’s John, Lyndsey and Kevin. John was to
show his consistency by shooting another 24, Lyndsey was determined
and put in a solid performance matching John’s performance with again
two 24’s. Under the circumstances this was exceptional shooting
!
Top 10 scores were:
Lynsdey Williams 48
John Thomas 48
Alan Parkin 47
Kevin Phillips 47
Chris Ingram 46
Gary Ingram 46
Geoff Seaborne 42
Angie Oliver 41
Adrian Osment 41
George Seaborne 38
Report By: Kevin Phillips (Gwent Skeet Co-ordinator)
West Glamorgan Skeet / Sporting County Qualifiers
A grand total of nineteen shooters
made the journey to Crynant shooting ground to shoot this year’s first
county qualifier. Both national skeet and sporting were held on
the same day, with many shooting both the skeet and sporting.
The storms that threatened to spoil the day did not appear thankfully
and the day went without any technical problems. A big thank you
to Leon, running the ground with his Father Chris, who provided some
very testing sporting targets. Also thank you Michelle who marks,
buttons, scores, fills in the paper work, provides the biscuits and
any thing else that needs to be done on the day to make it happen.
The national skeet saw Lloyd Handley, with his 687EELL and super fast
style dominate the scoring, dropping only one target to post the top
score of 49. Keith Davies, Kevin Rollinson and Mark Davies posted
scores of 47 for joint second positions. One score of note Rob
Ace who shot a 46 must be the most improved shooter of the year.
He confided in me that last year, he didn’t shoot many more in the final,
and that was over 100 targets! Well done Rob.
Crynant was made for shooting sporting clays, with its gently sloping
landscape and abundance of trees and bushes, high houses and hidden
traps a sporting shooters delight. The sporting shoot of 50 clays
over five stands was difficult most agreed, and the scores reflected
this. High gun went most deservedly to Andrew Davey who shot a
superb 40. Five clays behind was Hywel Gape with 35, and everyone
else was in the 20s and lower. For most this was not their finest
hour! But everyone enjoyed themselves.
It’s very satisfying for me to see so many shooters turn up to participate
with the county qualifiers. Three years ago when I took over as the
county co-ordinator we couldn’t find enough shooters to field a senior
team, things have definitely changed now, and the competition is good
for our sport.
