June 2009 Shooter Profile - 2009 Welsh National Skeet Counties High Gun - Chris Ingram (Gwent)

Welcome to our second WCTSA shooter profile.

This month we would like to introduce somebody that both Welsh Skeet and Sporting shooters may be familiar with - Chris Ingram - who this year won the 2009 Welsh National Skeet Counties High Gun.  Chris is shown below alongside the other 2009 Welsh National Skeet County winners below:

We have presented a number of questions to Chris and he has replied with some very interesting responses:

Question 1. What disciplines do you shoot?
Chris>> When I first started shooting, Sporting tended to be my main discipline, however recently I have started to shoot National Skeet discipline and found I very much enjoy that discipline.

Question 2. What type of gun are you using?
Chris>> The gun I am using at the moment is a Miroku MK38 32" trap gun.

Question 3. Is there a specific ammunition you favour or tend to use?
Chris>> I mainly use Eley cartridges.

Question 4. What's your background in shooting, when did you start, where did you start?
Chris>> I started shooting about 6 years ago at a small shoot put on by Jerry Preece (who I knew from my school days) and from that day onwards I got the bug.  I then went on to join a local club that shot most weekends, and although I now live in Herefordshire, my family was originally from Wales so there was only one choice, the WCTSA.  From then on it was off to registered sporting shoots for me.

Question 5. List of your achievements to date?
Chris>> In my first year of shooting registered shoots I found myself up in A class, my shooting seemed to be getting better and I qualified for the county sporting team.  But unfortunately I had a major incident which left me with serious injuries to the neck, meaning I could not shoot and it's only this season that I've managed to come back and start shooting again.  Having sold my Perazzi SC3 sporting gun thinking my shooting days were over, and after many hours of treatment to my neck injury I decided to purchase a new gun and give it another try, and it's really good to be back!

Question 6. Most memorable shoot/performance?
Chris>> One of my most memorable days was when I had just started out, and had been persuaded to go to Wylye Valley to a registered shoot.  I shot very well that day and came in with an 84, not knowing what was good or bad and was pleased to find that score was way up on the score board that day.  That feeling is fantastic!

Question 7. Who are your close shooting friends?
Chris>> I have a lot of shooting friends, some more serious shooters than others, but the people I tend to shoot with most often are Kevin McGuire, Lyndsey Williams, Gary Ingram (brother) and Geoff and Angie Seaborne (but only when it's a choice between going to the dentist or shooting trap disciplines!).

Question 8. Influences, coaches or people who've helped your shooting?
Chris>> On the whole I have been self taught, apart from the odd tip from the likes of Wayne Tyler and a few others now and again.

Question 9. Top tip for your chosen discipline?
Chris>> Concentration is most important, and don't worry about the clays you just missed - but think about the ones you're about to shoot.

Question 10. What are your hopes for the future of the sport?
Chris>> In a world where all sporting activities seem to be tarnished by people who don't like people to enjoy themselves, it would be nice to think that our hobby can rise above all these problems and flourish.  I for one will be trying my best to improve my shooting in the coming years.

Many thanks for taking part in our shooter profiles section Chris.

We are glad to see you have come back from injury and continued with clay shooting and its good to see the effort has paid off after winning the overall High Gun in the Welsh National Skeet Counties Final this year (2009).

We wish you every success for the coming years.

Welsh DTL News from the English/Dougall Memorial (Southern Counties)2009

Congratulations go out to Phil Morgan on his achievements at the Dougall Memorial and the English Open.

Phil took honours on the first day (Dougall Memorial) in AA grade after a shoot off on a score of 100 x 297.  The shoot off went through one round of normal DTL and then a round of single barrel before he triumphed and took first place in AA for the day.

The English Open on the Saturday was a different matter.  With a few scores of 100 x 299 already in - Phil knew he couldn't make many faults today. Phil barrelled a target in his first 7 of the day and he knew that this was all he could afford to drop.  This he did and ended on 299 to join Chaplow,  Stafford and Smyth for a shoot off for High Gun Overall.  In the shoot off Stafford barrelled a target so that was 3 left in it and it went down to single barrel.  Morgan went and missed his 7th or 8th in and he knew that would be the end of his challenge for the English Open title.  That miss resulted in him taking 3rd overall, but still a good result on the day.

It was then announced Phil would have to shoot off for High Gun over the 2 days - again against John Stafford.  With both barrelling a target in the first standard DTL line, the shoot off went to single barrel again.  Both missed 2 targets each and they wondered whether there was going to be an end to this shoot!  Finally the shoot went to sudden death and Morgan went up first and broke his target and then Stafford stepped up and missed, so it was all over and Morgan won the High Gun over 2 days - an excellent end to the weekend for Phil.

An added bonus was to come as Phil also took the Grandparents cup, so those grey hairs he has have confirmed the rumours !  But he still looks a very young Grandfather at that.

Out of the small group of Welsh shooters who attended this weekend Phil was the highest scoring Welshman at the event over the 2 days - well done Phil keep up the good work and good luck for the major championships coming up.

Welsh National Skeet Team Selection Shoots - Telpyn - 13th/14th June 2009

The National Skeet shoots held at Telpyn shooting ground for the weekend of the 13th/14th June were held in glorious sunshine, with hardly any wind, making almost perfect shooting conditions.  Shooters took advantage of these conditions making the two shoots well subscribed.

Rob English took charge on Saturday dominating the day’s events with a credible 98 smashed clays.  Following close behind with a 97 were Lloyd Morris, Rhys Evans and junior Gareth Walters.

Sunday saw Rhys Evans shoot his first three rounds straight, dropping 1 clay in his final round to score an excellent 99.  Other shooters of note, Rhys Price, Aled Jones and Lloyd Morris posting scores of 97.

The two shoots were well run and the targets were good. I would like to thank Rob, his family and staff for hosting the shoots.

Third ABT Welsh Selection Shoot (100 Targets) - Griffin Lloyd 14th June 2009

8 squads turned out for this selection shoot plus 1 shooter who shot on his own squad.

Weather was exceptional and with the installation of 2 new promatic traps - shooters were keen to get stuck in.

Early leaders at the 50 were Phil Morgan 50 x 50, Nigel Clarke 49 and Graham Evans 48.

All eyes were on Morgan because no one to date has shot a 100 straight at this venue (or so the rumours go).  That was soon to remain the same as Morgan missed a target about halfway through the second half - operator error he said !

With Evans shooting his 3rd stage clear, it meant there was only a point in it going into the last stage.  Not knowing how Evans had finished Morgan was going well but missed his 98th target for a personal best of a 98 so ended with 98 x 100.  On viewing the scoreboard Evans had missed 2 targets to finish on 96 (still impressive scoring from both men).

Phil Morgan is dominating the Welsh trap shooting news this month after qualifying to shoot for the Welsh DTL team on a zero count-back and setting a new record for that discipline.  What is even more remarkable is that after 3 qualifiers - he is also on zero count-back for the Welsh ABT team as well - can he qualify for the Welsh ABT team with four scores for zero count-back - watch this space !!!

Other notable winners were Nigel Clarke on 93 - again a personal best for him.  Andrew Harris on 95 and Rob Davies 92.

Many thanks to the Lewis family for a great day and we look forward to the next shoot on July 12th.

South Wales 2000 - Fifth DTL Welsh Qualifier & South Wales Championship - Sunday 31st May 2009

Fantastic weather again at S/W 2OOO for this shoot but with the calendar month of May filled to bursting point with events, the entry was affected for this the final DTL qualifier in South Wales for 2009 and also it was the South Wales Championships.

For the 64 competitors that did arrive things looked promising.  A stiff breeze was felt by everyone but did not affect the targets but unfortunately the scores once again did not match the conditions.

Some of the early shooters had posted 50 straight with a few second barrels.  Mike Weaver, Baz Owen, Glyn Jenkins, Phil Morgan and Gareth Evans were among the few.

But as the day progressed some shooters struggled and at the 75 stage you could see a lot of long faces, knowing that it was another shoot that had passed by without anyone really capitalising on the other shooters who hadn't attended.

At the end of the shoot it was Phil Morgan who triumphed once again shooting 100 x 296 to take High Gun and the South Wales Championships Trophy.  Hot on his heels was Glyn Jenkins 99 x 294.  These were the only scores in the 290's.

A new DTL record had been created by Morgan - being the only DTL shooter since the count-back rule had been in effect to qualify on 0 points with 3 shoots still to come.

There are 2 other shooters who could tie with Morgan (on a perfect zero count-back) these are Glyn Jenkins and Ifor Williams who have already won an event between them, but the pressure is now on with Morgan posting such impressive scoring.

Top lady shooter of the day was again Cas Trehearn (with a 281) who is dominating the ladies scores this year for the Welsh team.  It must have been a happy car on the way back to North Wales because both Cas and her shooting friend Jim Spence both picked up class prizes.

Young Arren Jones posted some impressive scores during the day and as such was top junior and also took a class prize in B.

The Krieghoff 500 (2009) - Mid Wales Shooting Centre - 21st/24th May 2009

Once again we were very lucky to have such a prestigious event held within Wales - for this the 11th year in succession.

Alan Rhone Ltd and all the staff at Mid Wales Shooting centre pulled out all the stops for another top class event.  The stunning weather for the "Classic" two day event on the Saturday and Sunday was the icing on the cake and for both days - over 500 shooters were put through their traps seamlessly - both days finishing well before expected finishing times.

On day one of the Classic it was good to see former Welsh international Graham Evans hitting a big score.  Graham shot a perfect score of 100/300 and fought off all competition in the shoot off to win the first day overall.  This has to be everybody's dream who shoots the Krieghoff - as by winning the first day you know you are guaranteed a place in the final and even with a worse case scenario you will be taking home second place which was a remarkable £1500 cash this year.  It was this runners up prize that Graham was to receive on the final day as he lost to Nick McKeown in the shoot off.  Congratulations Graham, very impressive shooting and good to see a Welsh contender achieving success in a top class event such as this.

Other Welsh performances from the Classic event held over the Saturday and Sunday are as follows:

EL Davies (Eric) - Krieghoff Classic finalist 1999 - posted a 100/298 on the first day to put himself in contention for a AA class prize over the two days.  Eric followed this up on the second day with 99/294 and although this put him out of the running for AA prizes, it secured him joint third place on the podium in the Veterans class.  Well done Eric - another Welshman on the podium and impressive shooting.

Also in AA class - BJ Owen posted a 100/298 on the first day and followed this up with a brilliant 100/298 on the second day also - it was amazing shooting to do this on consecutive days.  This secured BJ Owen joint seventh place in AA class - well done.

In AA in 16th place was WL Andrews with a combined score of 199 x 595 over the two days.  Scoring 594 over the two days (joint 21st) were Welsh shooters of DG Baugh, RM Faulkner and Phil Morgan.  Scoring 592 over the two days (joint 33rd) were Eric Davies (as previously mentioned) and KN Jones.  Well done everybody.

One of our top juniors AE Biddulph posted 198 x 589 over the two days to take sixth place overall in the junior category - well shot.

In the ladies category - LM Turpin just missed the podium after shooting 100/297 on the final day - finishing the two days in 4th place with 198/584.  Closely behind her was 6th place Welsh lady - C Trehearn who finished the two days with 197/581.  Well shot ladies.

We must also mention another Welsh international lady shooter - Sally Morrow, who went onto her last line 75 straight on the final day and was within touching distance of a perfect 100/300.  Sally finished with 100/296 after the last line on the final day - her personal best so far - excellent shooting Sally - congratulations.

Record Breakers !!!!!

Count-back was introduced some years ago to help balance out qualification shoots for Welsh Team selection.  Many shooters found qualifiers early in the year were wasted when targets were affected by the elements, so the introduction of count-back allowed lower scores to be registered and still be used towards qualification as all scores would be counted back from the high gun of that day........so for example before count-back a sporting shooter may have shot a high gun score of 75 ex 100 on a windy wet day which may have not have been much use towards qualification in the old system, but with count-back - he would have lost no points and somebody shooting a 70 that day would have only lost 5 points - so attending that shoot would be advantageous.

Take a look at the list of names below, they have all achieved something very special during the qualification process......

MS Heywood did it for ABT in 2007 and 2005.

M Allen did it for Olympic Skeet in 2005.

MH Wixey did it for Olympic Trap in 2006.

AH White did it for Sporting in 2007.

But what have they all done ???

Each of the above shooters have successfully won at least four shoots overall (high gun) for their appropriate discipline during Welsh Team Qualification and as such achieved a count-back score of zero points, thus setting a new record for their chosen discipline - impressive shooting indeed.

With this in mind we are pleased to announce another record breaker which is to be added to this impressive line up - twice British Open Down The Line champion Phil Morgan has successfully achieved a count-back score of "zero" for the Welsh Down The Line Team Qualifiers for 2009 - but what is even more impressive is that he has achieved this by winning 4 out of the first 5 qualifiers and there are still another 3 to go !!!!!

Well done Phil - this is the first time a zero count-back has been achieved for the DTL discipline since count-back began.

Obviously with three qualifiers to go Phil can't improve on his count-back score and has already secured his Welsh team place, but we all hope the success continues for the up and coming English Open, Welsh Two Day, British Open and Home International.
