July 2010 Shooter Profile - Welsh Veteran Shooter - Geoff Seabourne

This month see's our 15th shooter profile published !

If you shoot skeet or DTL you will probably have already met this popular veteran and top Welsh shooter - Geoff Seabourne.  After starting shooting as a young boy and now a veteran shooter, Geoff has a lot of shooting experience under his belt - so this should make for an interesting profile again this month.

So its over to Geoff Seabourne to answer his questions this month:

[Click picture to enlarge]

Question 1. What disciplines do you shoot?

Geoff>> I currently shoot DTL and Skeet in the main, at County level I also shoot Sporting, ABT and All Round.

Question 2. What type of gun are you using?

Geoff>> For trap shooting I use a Perazzi 2005 High Rib. For Skeet a Miroku 7000 and for Sporting a Beretta 682X.

Question 3. Is there a specific ammunition you favour or tend to use?

Geoff>> For preference I use Saga – Eurotrap or anything cheap containing lead.

Question 4. What's your background in shooting, when did you start, where did you start?

Geoff>> I started shooting as a teenager with my dad. We used to go rough shooting with local farmers and friends. In those days I shot with SBS 16 bore German gun. I progressed to shooting straw bale 10 bird DTL at local shows and fetes. In the early 90's I started shooting DTL more regularly with the Borderers Gun Club near Abergavenny and Sporting with Allensmore Gun Club near Hereford. With the Borderers I was encouraged by Mal Vaughan, Glyn Morgan and Ernie Jenkins. At the Allensmore club I was encouraged by the local Hereford shooters including Jerry Preece among others.

Question 5. List of your achievements to date?

Geoff>> Gwent County Badge – representing the county in all disciplines. Winning Veteran team trophy with Alan Parkin in both 2008 and 2009 for Sporting. Winning Veteran Skeet Team and Veteran All Round Team trophy in 2009 again partnered by Alan. Captain's Cup for All Round 2009. I qualified for the DTL veteran team in 2009 and won the Topper Brown Trophy for the highest scoring veteran welsh team member at the British Open 2009.

Question 6. Most memorable shoot/performance?

Geoff>> This has to be my first 100/300 scored in January 2008 using the Perazzi 2005 for the first time, at Mid Wales.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

Question 7. Who are your close shooting friends?

Geoff>> These are too numerous to name but among the closest are my partner Angie, son George, Chris Ingram, Alan Parkin and the Gwent teams.

Highslide JS Highslide JS
[Click pictures to enlarge]

Question 8. Influences, coaches or people who've helped your shooting?

Geoff>> I've never received any formal coaching but have been helped and advised by many including Mal Vaughan, Roy Gudrat, Phil Morgan and many others of the Welsh Team. At the World Skeet Championships at Doveridge in August 2009 I received some unofficial coaching from Alan Warren England Team Member while he was waiting with the English team to use the practice range. I was having problems with the pair on Peg 4, his advice was shoot the high bird 5 yards earlier. He said "Good luck you Welsh ********". It worked I didn't miss a pair on Peg 4.

Question 9. Top tip for your chosen discipline?

Geoff>> Concentration, keep your head on the stock and believe in yourself, your gun and your cartridges. Do not be intimidated by the opposition. (Although easier said than done)

Question 10. What are your hopes for the future ?

Geoff>> That more funding can be found and as much encouragement as possible is given the both young and new upcoming shooters. More registered grounds in Wales to widen the qualification possibilities and increase experience for all shooters. (It would be nice if there were more co-operation between North and South Wales shooters to have more opportunities to have competitions, to again increase experience for all shooters)

Question 11. What are "your personal ambitions and goals" within shooting for the foreseeable future ?

Geoff>> To remain in the Welsh Team for DTL and qualify for the Skeet Team.

Thanks Geoff for providing our members with another good read this month. We hope your ambitions are fulfilled and all of us here at the WCTSA wish you every success for the future.

Sporting Home International Location Change

Although this news has already been published in the WCTSA Sporting International page much earlier in July by Brian Davies, I have also been asked to bring the news to peoples attention in the main news section:

Due to circumstances beyond the control of the CPSA, the Home International shooting venue will now be held at Barrow Heath Sporting Clays, near Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk on Saturday 11th September 2010 and not at Lakenheath CTC as previously advised. Barrow Heath is approx 20 mins from Lakenheath and so all booked accommodation should not need to be moved.

Barrow Heath Sporting Clays is situated alongside the A14, junction 41 between Newmarket and near Bury St Edmunds. (take the Saxham, Risby slip road and follow the “CLAY” signs).

ABT County Qualifier Date Change

Would all prospective attendees at the Glamorgan ABT county qualifier at Nelson shooting ground please note that the last shoot which was due to take place on the 8th of August has been brought forward to the 1st August instead.

Message from the 2010 Welsh DTL Team Captain

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

May I take this opportunity to thank all the Welsh team members for the tremendous effort during what can only be descried as a testing 2 days shooting. I could go into more detail why this was a testing 2 days, but I do not see what benefits this will bring.

I know things could have gone better for the team, but I also know that every single shooter gave 100%. We can not ask for more than this.

Thanks also go to Ian Jones and Will Palmer for their support over the weekend as DTL executives and Team Manager (respectively).

I would like to congratulate Richard Hillier, Tom Moseley, Arren Jones, George Seabourne and Deena Griffiths on their first ever DTL caps this year. I hope you enjoyed your first DTL international and I wish you all the very best for team qualification in the future.

I would like to congratulate the junior team for their excellent shooting over the 2 days and for finishing a very respectable 2nd place in the Home international.

I would also like to congratulate the following individuals - Phil Morgan, Ann Butler, Richard Hillier, Alex Biddulph, Eric Davies, John Hughes and Gwyn Roberts for their performances either on Friday or Saturday.

6th Sporting Welsh International Qualifier – Mid Wales Shooting Centre – 18th July 2010

This was the 6th Welsh team sporting qualifier of the year and took place in Mid Wales shooting centre. The changeable weather conditions over the weekend would make for some very challenging targets, but our quality Welsh sporting stars are more than up to a slight change in Welsh weather !

D Evans and JL Morris are having a really consistent season this year and both of these shooters were in first place at the end of the shoot, scoring 86 targets a piece. This leaves both Dorian and Julian in first and second place in the team at this moment in time. Well done both.

Many thanks to the Williams family, the catering staff and all the ground staff for another great event.

Footnote: Thanks to Yvonne Rees for sending over the scores. I knocked this report together in about half an hour in the hope of drumming up some interest from the sporting disciplines. As of 2010 we have received no reports from Fitasc or Sporting international qualifiers and we would love to hear from you - in an area of the sport which is gaining in popularity year after year. We also now have a regular monthly column in the Clay Shooting magazine, so would welcome submissions for that too !
96 shooters were present at this sporting qualifier event, don't leave it to the next person - next time try writing up a report and taking a few pictures to give your discipline the limelight it deserves.

Welsh DTL Practice Shoot News - Mid Wales Shooting Centre - 11th July 2010

Thanks again to the Williams family at Mid Wales shooting centre who organised a subsidised team get together for the 2010 Welsh DTL team which was run alongside a conventional 100 bird DTL event. Thanks to all who made the effort to attend.
The headline of the day - Gwyn Roberts our young junior DTL shooter who won the Junior DTL Welsh Open title the week before posted a 100/330, his first ever. Congratulations Gwyn from us all, we hope your current success continues in the international weekend.

Welsh Grand Prix – Mid Wales Shooting Centre - 3rd and 4th July 2010

The DTL Grand Prix is a popular event on the DTL calendar because this is one of the last major championships held before the home international and attracts shooters from all over the country. Once again the Grand Prix was held at Mid Wales Shooting Centre under the expert control of the Williams family.

This two day event is also a very important time for Welsh shooters as this is the last two shoots to determine the Welsh team places, quite often team members can move in or even out of a team on the last two days – so its always a well fought event.

Saturday – Day One

Saturday was a nice warm day, with the odd breeze and frequent sunny periods.

Saturday was not to see a Welsh shooter achieve the high gun of the day.  Top English shooter Paul Chaplow kicked off the first day with a top score of 100/299 which wasn’t matched by anybody else, congratulations Paul.

For the potential members of the Welsh shooting team though, there were some very encouraging high scores across the board. 4 of our top AA senior shooters all ended on 100/298 – these were Dave Baugh, Phil Morgan, Ifor Williams and Rob Parry. With scores of 100/297 from RT Millichamp, 100/296 from Lee Jones and 294’s from Gareth (GD) Evans, Tim Howells, Glyn Jenkins and Mike Weaver the potential senior team members are looking strong.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

Onto the Veterans and Mick McConville has had some incredible scores recently and Saturday was to follow a similar path as he posted 100/297 to be highest Veteran of the day.  Veteran Neil Hughes was the next highest Welsh veteran scorer with 100/294, followed by 290’s by Eric Davies and Geoff Seabourne.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

Another strong performance by the Welsh juniors, with Alex Biddulph being highest scoring junior of the day with 100/298. Arren Jones was a few points behind with 98/293 and Barry Griffiths with 98/291.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

Finally to the ladies and Ann Butler continued to lead the Welsh ladies with a very impressive score of 99/293. Gail Morgan scored 93/276 and Helen Jones 96/274.
Consistent scoring in the various Welsh categories looks very encouraging indeed as the Home International and British Open draws ever closer.

Sunday – Day Two

The main event for some and when somebody walks away with the title of Welsh Open Champion for 2010. The weather for Sunday was quite different to the Saturday with quite strong winds at times, but still with the odd occasional sunny period.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

After Welsh shooter Dave Hughes dominating last years Welsh DTL Grand prix. would another Welsh shooter take the main title of Welsh DTL champion this year or would it go elsewhere ?

John Stafford was to be the only shooter to post a perfect 100/300 and as such was crowned this years Welsh champion.  This was on the back of being crowned overall champion at the Krieghoff 500 event which was the last major DTL championship held here at Mid Wales.  Well done John, Mid Wales certainly seems to be a favourite winning ground for you !

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

Not far behind John was Welsh shooter Wayne Cliffton who has had a really consistent season this year, posting good scores throughout the whole qualification process.  Wayne shot 100/299 which must have secured him a place in the top squad for the international this year ? Also on 100/299 was English shooter Tony Dore who was runner up here on the two day Krieghoff Classic event.

The next highest scoring Welsh senior was Gareth Howells with 100/298, followed by Phil Morgan with 99/294 and Gareth (GW) Evans on 99/292.

Welsh Veteran champion this year was English shooter Tony Dore who was runner up here on the two day Krieghoff Classic event. Tony shot 100/299 and was followed in second place with a face from the past, our very own Syd Williams who shot 99/296. Top scoring Welsh veteran was Neil Hughes with 99/294, followed by Eric Davies with 99/291.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

Another top score from Welsh junior Gwyn Roberts with 100/296 was to secure him the title of Welsh Junior Champion 2010. Close behind was Alex Biddulph with 99/295, giving him a very good average score for the two days.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

After consistent shooting from Ann Butler throughout this season, it was no surprise to see her crowned Welsh Ladies champion for 2010 after posting 98/292. Close behind was fellow Welsh lady shooter Deena Griffiths with 98/285.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

Well done all who took part and a special congratulations to all the championship winners.

Thanks to the Williams family, the catering staff , Yvonne/Rita and all the statisticians and all the helpers.

Good luck to the Welsh DTL team in Scotland, we all hope it goes extremely well for you all.

National Skeet 6th and 7th Welsh Team Selection Shoots - Telpyn - 3rd and 4th July 2010

Rob Phillips hosted the two National Skeet qualifier shoots over the weekend of 3rd/4th July at Telpyn shooting ground.  Telpyn, over looking the Amroth bay, has the most beautiful views of all our grounds, add to this good food and a warm welcome from Rob and his wife and the weekend was sure to be a success.

The Squads rotated through all four skeet ranges without a hitch or break down. Both days saw the shooting start straight after the draw at 10:30 and finish before 3pm, early indeed.

Saturday saw the weather warm and still, and the high scores rolled in. Three top guns, Rob English, Huw Evans and Nigel Hodson posted scores of 99 to pick up zero points on the day.  Junior Andrew Davey shot a 98 for only 1 point. Other scores of note include Gareth Irvin with a 97, and Lloyd Handley, John Thomas and Dai Francis with 96 kills.  The warm weather helping the shooters ensuring the clays flew true.

Sunday saw a complete turn around with the weather; the day was dominated by wind and rain.  The wind made a good job of making the clays dip and dive, difficult targets to hit indeed.  The rain made sure every one was soaked through, and even fog even made an appearance. Not ideal conditions and the scores were expectably lower. Nigel Hodson high gun of the day with 95, Huw Evans on 94 along with Brian Wells, Lloyd Handley and Rob Hodson.  The weather made for difficult targets and the scores reflected the conditions.

There is now less than three weeks to the last qualifier, the Welsh Open, when the National Skeet team 2010 will be announced.  The international this year is to be held in Wales at Telpyn, so the practice of shooting the last qualifiers here will surely pay dividends.

The very best of luck to everyone shooting the Welsh Open.

6th DTL Welsh International Qualifier - Mid Wales Shooting Centre - 27th June 2010

This was the sixth DTL Welsh team qualifier held here at Mid Wales in hot glorious sunshine and things are heating up on the shooting front too because after this one – only the Welsh Grand Prix two day event is left. There was a good turnout for this event too with 111 shooters present.

The first ten squads went out and a few exceptionally good scores were shown on the board.  At the fifty stage Glyn Jenkins was 50/150 and top Welsh veteran Eric Davies 50/150.  RV Hillier was 50/148, Alan Vaughan 50/148 and Rob Parry 50/148.

After the last two qualifiers, the high gun winners have managed to get perfect 100/300 scores in back to back shoots.  It started with Phil Morgan in South Wales 2000 and was then followed up by Mick McConville in Mid Wales Shooting Centre on the previous qualifier.  Would this be a taste of things to come on what seemed such a perfect sunny day ?  It certainly would as Glyn Jenkins came in with a 100/300 – congratulations Glyn, excellent result.  Close on his tail was Eric Davies who posted 100/298 after dropping a single barrel on both of his last lines – but still keeping him in pole position in the Veterans team.

As for the rest of the early pace setters - Rob Parry continued his fine shooting into the last 50 and ended with 100/296.  RV Hillier dropped a few more points to end with 98/290, but this would still win him C class overall.  Alan Vaughan ended with 98/289.

The next phase of squads went out and the same story appeared on the board as there was some potential perfect scores developing again, with Phil Morgan and Ifor Williams both posting 50/150.  Geoff Seabourne (Vet), Graham (GD) Evans and Tom Devaney (Vet) all had 50/149.  It was good to see yet another Veteran and a Junior posting up some high scores at the 50 stage too - John Henry Thomas was shooting in fine form after dropping only two points for 50/148 as was top Welsh Junior Gwyn Roberts who had shot a 50/147.

The final scores had come in from the second wave and the final few extra squads and nobody had managed to equal Glyn Jenkins score on the day – so he was crowned high gun.

Phil Morgan had made a good effort in the second half to try and match Glyn Jenkins and ended up with 100/298.  Phil would join Eric Davies who also shot the same score on the first wave to take joint AA honours.

Top veteran John Henry Thomas had held things together – perhaps it was the wind sweeping through his hair that kept him cool as a cucumber as he drove his turbo charged golf cart round the ground, as he ended with 100/297.  John was to was to be joint 4th highest scorer overall and was joined by a junior who had also had an impressive performance because Welsh junior Gwyn Roberts also posted 100/297. Both of these shooters shared joint first place in A class.

Ifor Williams continued his success after his 50/150 start and ended with 99/296 which would give him joint third in AA.  Geoff Seabourne also built on his early 50 success and posted 100/295 to give him joint third in A class.

Onto the ladies and some concerning news because one of our top Welsh lady shooters Lynn Turpin was seen with her hand in plaster.  We all wish Lynn a speedy recovery.  Deena Griffiths had big aspirations this year – not only was she trying to qualify for the Welsh Ladies National Skeet team, but she was also trying for a Welsh Ladies DTL team place. Incredibly on Sunday she shot a brilliant score especially considering that 48 hours previous she had laser eye surgery.  Deena shot the highest ladies score of the day of 99/293 (10th overall) and secured her DTL Welsh cap for Scotland.

Onto the Veterans and we have already mentioned the top veterans scores, but its encouraging to see that Eric Davies and John Henry Thomas were second and fourth out of all the 111 competitors on Sunday ! Looks like we may have a very strong veterans team this year if the high scoring continues !

And finally to the juniors – we already mentioned Gwyn Roberts who shot an amazing 100/297 and was 4th overall !  There was some high scoring too from young Arren Jones who shot 98/288 and from Barry Griffith’s who wasn’t far behind with 98/285. The Junior team is also looking very strong this year too !

Thanks to Arthur, Rita, Yvonne, Jonathon and staff for another excellent run shoot.

Thanks as always to Rachael and her catering staff for some excellent cuisine and wonderful cakes.

This week I’d like to give special thanks to Ian Jones who took over the photography and I’m sure you will all agree, he has produced some really nice pictures.  Ian was very keen to capture every moment and we apologise to anybody he followed in the toilets with the camera, he will learn in time not to do that ! Thanks Ian, a great job – perhaps it should become a permanent thing ?

Not far to go now – it’s the Welsh two day grand prix here at Mid Wales on the 4th and 5th July and there are still team places up for grabs, so good luck everybody – shoot well and lets all hope for more lovely sunshine !

Report By: David R. Lea (Webmaster and Clay Shooting Magazine columnist)
Pictures By: Ian Jones (DTL Executive)

Message from your National County Coordinator

The County qualifiers for the DTL and ABT have started in readiness for the County Finals this year and it wont be long before the All Round qualifiers will start as well. This year we were very fortunate to have some great reports submitted by the County Co-ordinators for the Skeet and the Sporting including some photos as well that even made it into our new section of the Clay Shooting magazine. Our Web Master, Dave Lea, is always looking for things to submit to that magazine as well as our web site, and as the National County Co-ordinator I would love to see you support his efforts by sending him some things in yourselves.

Even if the County co-ordinator is unable to send anything in, then maybe you, as a participant of one of the qualifiers would like to lend a hand and send in some photos or a report and who knows....you might even see yourself in one of the top shooting magazines such as Clay Shooting!

Angie Goodman - National County Coordinator

Message to the Welsh DTL Shooters

Ian Jones the DTL Executive would like to remind shooters that this weekend (3rd & 4th July) the last two DTL selection shoots are to be held at Mid-Wales Shooting Centre (including the Welsh Grand Prix). There are still places in all the teams: seniors, ladies, juniors and veterans up for grabs.
After our excellent showing in all categories last year we want strong teams to represent Wales again this year, so make sure you try to make it please!

New Board member and further vacancies

The WCTSA would like to welcome another executive discipline representative to the board in the form of Will Palmer who now fill the final DTL executive position. Will is also the current Welsh team DTL team manager, but fear not as he will continue his manager position as well as his executive board position.

Can we also remind people that there are still other WCTSA vacancies available on the board (ABT and OT execs) and at county level, please follow the link below for more details.

Team Clothing Information

Ann Snelgrove (the secretary) is now holding a new stock of re-designed shooting vests and also a smaller stock of mesh vests for Welsh Team members which now have Cymru Wales on the back (as agreed by the Board). These are supplied by Top Gun clothing, a British registered company.

If you want to reserve a new vest to replace your tired old Welsh vest or fancy a mesh vest for shooting in the summer heat, contact Ann Snelgrove on the the contacts page for more details.

Clay Shooting Magazine

I have been running a magazine column for the Clay Shooting magazine called "Within Wales" for the last 4 months now. It was originally done as a short term test, but it seems now that I will be in for the long haul after being very happy with the initial feedback.

I have attempted to try to make the Within Wales column as varied as possible and to cover as many disciplines as I can. Many people are un-aware that this column exists, so the initial purpose of this message is to bring peoples attention to this.

I would also like to ask people for future contributions, because I publish some content that is not available here on the website (to keep the column fresh).

The column caters for all clay shooting within Wales, so you may see the odd article from other shooting organisations too. The column is being run independently of any other commitments I have.

I hope the shooters of Wales do start to follow the column, as my prime intention is to give a Welsh nation who has a fine set of shooters the publicity they deserve for all their efforts.

David R. Lea - WCTSA Webmaster and Clay Shooting Magazine "Within Wales" columnist.
