July 2009 Shooter Profile - 2009 Welsh National Skeet Shooter - John Thomas

Welcome to our third WCTSA shooter profile.

This month we would like to introduce a popular Welsh skeet shooting personality.  If you shoot Skeet in Wales then "you will know" of John Thomas or JT.  John will be shooting for Wales with his 14th consecutive cap this year and has been made captain of the Welsh World National Skeet Team.  John has had the honour of being one of the few Welsh shooting personalities to be profiled on Horse and Country TV which is shown on Sky, when he shot 100 straight at the 2007 National Skeet British Open and was interviewed with his shooting friend Richard Stepney.  John Thomas has also held the position of Welsh National Skeet Executive for the WCTSA (in the past) for three and a half years.

In his answers below he has been very modest in his list of achievements, but as a webmaster I have posted up many articles of John and his winning ways, so I have included some of the many pictures in this article.  One of these achievements was Welsh National Skeet champion in 2007 which is shown below:

Before we present his questions and answers, here are a few recent profile shots of John Thomas (photo's courtesy of Nigel Hodson).

We have presented a number of questions to John and he has replied with some very interesting responses:

Question 1. What disciplines do you shoot?
JT>>  I currently shoot National Skeet but have also shot Sporting and some Trap disciplines.

Question 2. What type of gun are you using?
JT>>  For the past 6 years I have used a Krieghoff K80 30”sporter but have previously shot with a Perazzi, Browning & a Miroku.

Question 3. Is there a specific ammunition you favour or tend to use?
JT>>  Victory skeet 480 (28 grams) due to their consistency and low recoil.

Question 4.  What's your background in shooting, when did you start, where did you start?
JT>>  I started shooting at the age of 11 with a .410 (which I still have) doing some rough shooting on my father’s farm, I started clay shooting in mid 70’s at a local Sunday Shooting Club in Llansannor and then left it for a few years due to family & work commitments.  I restarted shooting in Rhiwderin CPC for a bit of fun approx 20 years ago, met Steve Greedy who introduced me to Skeet shooting and I just got more involved and started shooting County & Welsh qualifiers a few years later.

Question 5.  List of your achievements to date?
JT>>  Shooting in the Welsh National Skeet Team for 13 years consecutively and fingers crossed will be 14 this year!!  I have also shot for Gwent county team in Skeet, Sporting & All-round for a number of years.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

Question 6.  Most memorable shoot/performance?
JT>>  Few occasions, shooting 50 straight in the Shoot-off in Telpyn to get into the Welsh team for the first time in 1996, shooting my 1st 100 straight in Gloucester CPC, winning 1st in B and A class in the British Open Skeet, captaining Wales in Ireland in 2000, winning the Welsh Open with 198/200 at Telpyn.

Question 7.  Who are your close shooting friends?
JT>>  Steve Greedy (before he retired from shooting), Richard Stepney (when he decides to shoot National Skeet).  Can I also add that I have made many friends from the other Home Countries, too numerous to mention.

Question 8.  Influences, coaches or people who've helped your shooting?
JT>>  Allen Warren for the coaching & confidence he provides.

Question 9.  Top tip for your chosen discipline?
JT>>  Practice hard to get the results and get coached by a Top Quality Coach.

Question 10.   We recently seen yourself and Richard Stepney representing Wales on Sky TV's Horse and Country for the 2007 British Open National Skeet Championships - how was this for you, have you had a lot of feedback from it ?
JT>>  It was a great day as I shot 100 straight and took Mr Stepney’s money again!!  I was disappointed in the Shoot-off to drop a clay.  The programme helped to bring the sport more into the public eye.

Question 11.   What are your hopes for the future of the sport?
JT>>  Encourage the juniors to enjoy the sport and other competitors to shoot for pleasure.

Question 12.   What are your personal ambitions for the future?
JT>>  I want to see people enjoying themselves and doing well.  My personal ambition is to improve my shooting and continue to shoot for Wales.

Many thanks for taking part in our shooter profiles section John.

We wish you every success John and hope you reach your goal of continuing to shoot for Wales for the foreseeable future and I'm sure out readers will keep an eye out for you on the television next time.

Olympic Skeet Welsh Qualifier - South Wales 2000 - 25/26th July

As the Olympic Skeet selection season draws to a close, the final 125 shoot took place at SW2000 last weekend with the weathermen being correct for once. Saturday dawned nice and bright which meant targets like dustbin lids, for the biggest turnout of the season so far.

Early pace setter was Richard Stepney dropping a single target on both his first rounds for a 48ex 50 with Tony Grove on 43, Steve Taylor and Julian Jeremy 41 a piece. The 3rd round however was to prove a killer for the leader, dropping an uncharacteristic 8 targets to finish the first day tied with JJ and Mr Taylor on 65.

The 100 bird shoot was completed by a full squad on the Saturday afternoon, wisely taking heed of the weather warning, with Lyn Davies cementing his place in the team for his second cap with the GP still to go.

Now to Sunday, and the culmination of the 125 season. As predicted, it was showers all day long, with wet weather gear being the order of the day for everyone.

3 shooters completed their hundred targets on an equal 86 ex 100 for the much sought after zero points, Jeremy, Taylor and Stepney, with Tony Grove 2 behind on 84. Junior shooter Rhys Price consolidated on a bad first round completing the first 4 rounds with a 79.

So there was all to play for on the final round of the day, Jeremy and Taylor finished strongly with 23 a piece for a joint winning score of 109 with Stepney on 107 and Grove 106.

Mike Amodeo had a surprise for the top 6 shooters, a flash final with a prize of 100 free targets for the winner. Wheels fell off everywhere, apart from 2 shooters, Tony Grove and Jonathan Stepney, both finishing on a 23. The decider was pairs on 4 as usual, where Jonathan missed the complete pair and Tony cleaned up both, winning the free targets. Another good showing came from Rhys Price shooting his first flash final, watch this space, there's a lot more to come as Rhys has qualified for no less than 3 International Teams this year.

An excellent shoot again at SW2000 spoiled only by Sunday's atrocious weather. Many thanks again to Mike and Margaret Amodeo for their kind welcome, Sian for the catering and witty banter and Steve for keeping the traps topped up. See you all next year.

The OSK circus now rolls on to Mid Wales for the Welsh GP on 1st and 2nd August, a 200 bird event but both days counting for the team, which should prove as exciting as last year with the last couple of places still up for grabs.

The 3 Senior shooters for the Commonwealth Shooting Federation European Division Championships to be held in the Isle of Man this September are :-

Tony Grove

Richard Stepney

Steve Taylor

They will be joined by Junior Lady Cerys Evans.

Best of luck to all.

DTL Home International / British Open 2009 - A Captains Thank You

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all that took part in the DTL Home International 2009.  Having taken runners up positions in all categories was an amazing achievement by all of you.  I was honoured to be your Captain and to be part of this spectacular order of merit which we all achieved (fabulous).

This year we proved that we have exceptional talent within the team in "all sections" - Ladies, Juniors, Veterans and Senior levels.  With this we can look forward to Scotland in 2010.  It has been a long hard season for some with the current economic climate, but thank you all for giving your all and the just rewards were taken on the Friday (Home International) - a great job everybody !

For those of you who will be trying for the team in 2010 - wouldn't it be great to roll the other Countries at the next one so that with a little more belief and a greater understanding of what is expected of each individual - winning will become possible.  Statistically here's why - England won it with a score of 5859 x 6000 they had 15 scores of 290 and above with an average of 292.95 per man.  Wales as runners up had 13 scores of 290 and above 5821 x 6000 an average of 291.05 per man.  38 points the margin and dam close wouldn't you agree ?  It is not quite two second barrels a man.

For all those who took awards at International level and British Open congratulations to you all.

The year isn't over for some and with the County shoots approaching for some I wish them all the very best.

2009 DTL Team Captain

Welsh National Skeet - Message from a WCTSA Member

I wish to compliment Mr Richard Stepney and Mr Mark Davies on the organisation of the welsh open held at South Wales 2000 on Sunday.  It was run extremely well for all spectators and shooters to witness.  It allowed for a day of excellent shooting and a display of the talent that we have in Wales.

I wish to also thank Mr Amodeo on holding the event and once again it was a success.  All staff were excellent and can only hope that many more National Skeet shoots continue to be held in such a venue.

With regards to the meeting after the shoot, I would like to thank Mr Stepney and Mr Davies on being professional when some difficult questions arose, and their dealing of these in a honest and diplomatic way. They run the meeting successfully and allowed for everybody's opinions to be expressed.

Am ddiwrnod llwyddianus!

Welsh National Skeet Open - South Wales 2000 12th July

South Wales 2000 greeted skeet shooters from as far afield as Aberdeen and Cornwall for this the Welsh National Skeet Open, with bright but very blustery conditions.  With an entry of 10 squads, Mike Amodeo supplied 4 ranges and shooting started immediately after the draw was made at 10.30am.

The wind was to prove a decisive factor as from 48 shooters only 5 straight 25's were recorded over the first round, Nigel Hodson, Lloyd Morris, Pete Collins and a few others setting their stall early.

At the half way stage Hodson was the only one to have cleared both rounds, Pete Collins having dropped one half way round.  Waiting in the wings however were a few more just two away on 48.......waiting for wheels to drop off!

Pete Collins was the early leader in the Vets class, having just turned 60 last month, he looked younger than me!!! Whilst Carol Francis was showing a clean pair of heels to the ladies.  Juniors Ashley Sharman and Jac Williams were just one clay apart and itching for the next round.

Onto the third round and as the dear departed Chris Potter would say, if your 50 straight, this is the hardest one, and so it proved for Hodson, a single high six sailing on into the bushes for a 24, dashing all hopes of a “Ton”.  A surge from Junior, Rhys Price saw him pull to within one clay of leader Sharman, and that's how it would stay till the end - Rhys blaming the fact that he had been in Ibiza all week on his first round !!!!

With the 100 straight now an impossibility, Hodson sailed through the last round straight to finish on an incredible 99, incredible yes, as top flight shooters from 3 Nations were struggling all day.  But now to those wheels, did some fall off?  Oh yes, spare a thought for Alan Jones, 2 away at 75, dropping an uncharacteristic 5 on his last round, as did K Phillips and Rhys Evans.  Not so however for Rob English, keeping his nerve throughout the day finishing on 97.  Carol Francis also finished strongly with a 23 for a final score of 93 taking the Ladies title back to Pembrokeshire.

The veterans class was the only one to be decided by a shoot off this year, between our very own Hodson Senior and Scotlands Pete Collins, the Trophy finally going to Pete Collins.

National Skeet seems to have had a bit of a resurgence in Wales this year, with many new and old faces turning out for the selections, lets hope it continues to grow next season, when we entertain the other Home Nations at the 30th Anniversary of the competition in Telpyn, West Wales.

Many thanks for the support that Mark and myself have received this year, especially from Mrs Davies, who has meticulously kept the scores at every shoot, and sorted everyone's permits for Ireland.

Welsh DTL Grand Prix (Two Day) Report- Mid Wales Shooting Centre - 4th/5th July 2009

The weather was mixed for this the Welsh DTL Grand Prix (Two Day) held again this year at Mid Wales Shooting Centre.  Warm temperatures with light winds were common, but mixed in with these were the odd torrential rain storm, dull conditions and occasional breeze – something to challenge even the most experienced of shooters.

Although this is one of the major championships on the DTL calendar, it is especially important for the Welsh shooters as team positions have been turned around on the last two days of the qualification process.

Day One - Saturday 4th July

It was an A class English shooter who was to set the high scoring early on the first day of the grand prix. Shooting on the first wave of squads (squad 7)  – JJ Inglis posted 99/296 and unknown to him, he was to hold the top of the leader board throughout most of the day.

It was only on the very last wave of squads that any scores came near to catching JJ Inglis.  PR Morgan came very close with a 99/295 on squad 31 and on squad 34 – former English World DTL champion J Stafford came in with 99/295 (both of these were to take 1st in AA that day - well done both).

Other note-able scores in the later squads were A Leak – 100/294, DG Baugh 99/294, GW Evans 99/294 and GD Jenkins 99/294.

One of our top Welsh juniors - AE Buddulph came in on squad 40 with a score on 91/291 – being the highest junior of the day.  The highest Veteran of the day was Welsh shooter - G Seabourne shooting a 99/293.  The highest lady of the day was Welsh shooter - AE Butler on 98/291 - well done all.

In terms of highest scoring 5 man squad of the day – it was the same as the previous weekend, the strong Welsh squad led by Will Palmer:

Squad 32
Peg Name Score
1 W Palmer 98 x 286
2 BJ Owen 98 x 292
3 GW Evans 99 x 294
4 L Jones 98 x 289
5 GD Jenkins 99 x 294

Finally - back to the the fight for top of the leader board - Squad 39 came in with a surprise in the form of Welsh shooter D Hughes (former World Sporting/FITASC champion and current 2009 Grand Master) – he had equalled the score of JJ Inglis with 99/296 and eventually took overall high gun for that day – what a result so late in the day !

Below are some profile shots of the talented Dave Hughes:

Highslide JS   Highslide JS
[Click pictures to enlarge]

Class results from Saturday:

High Gun - D Hughes – 99/296

AA 1st – PR Morgan and J Stafford - 99/295
AA 3rd – DG Baugh – 99/294

A 1st – JJ Inglis – 99/296
A 2nd – A Leak – 100/294
A 3rd – G Seabourne – 99/293

B 1st – J Clarke 98/286
B 2nd – MH Mason – 97/286
B 3rd – RC Lewis – 98/285

C 1st – PJ Ball 97/281
C 2nd – I Blackburn – 95/277
C 3rd – IM Davies – 94/273

As you can see - quite a few Welsh shooters were picking up class prizes on the Saturday - D Hughes, PR Morgan, DG Baugh, G Seabourne, MH Mason and PJ Ball.

Brian posted the new team listings on Saturday evening on the website so that people could figure out what they needed to do for the following day to secure their Welsh team place.  But day two is also about winning championships too……

Day Two - Sunday 5th July

Almost like a mirror image of the previous day – a shooter on an early squad came in with a high score which would lead the score board most of the day.  English shooter S Smith came in with an incredible 100/299 on squad 11 , there wouldn’t be any margin for error for people to beat this shooter today – it was a perfect score, or it was down to a shoot off !

Welsh veteran DG Ricketts was one on the first people to come close to the Englishman’s score – he came in on 100/297 on squad 14 and was ultimately to be the highest scoring Veteran of the day thus becoming Welsh Open Veterans DTL champion for 2009 and was to take the G Bugler Veterans Cup for winning Veterans overall and the Alun Jones cup for highest Welsh Veterans kills - well done.

Highslide JS  Highslide JS  Highslide JS

Once again it was going to be the late shooting squads that were to shake up the score board.  Many of these would be Welsh shooters as they choose to shoot late so that they can hang around for the results from the grand prix and hear about who has gained their Welsh team places for the year.

Top English lady shooter V Bowering was to add another title to her collection for this season by becoming Welsh Open Ladies DTL champion for 2009 by posting 100/297 on squad 36 which was within touching distance of S Smiths 100/299.  Vicky was to receive the AE Browning DTL Championships Ladies Trophy - congratulations.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

The top Welsh lady of the day was AE Butler again (as on Saturday) with 98/290 - Ann was to receive the Ruth Atkinson Vase for being highest scoring Welsh Lady - well done.  Ann was also the top qualifying lady in the ladies team for 2009.

Highslide JS

The top junior for the day was English A Sikorski with 99/293, so he would be crowned Welsh Open Junior DTL champion for 2009 and take the Gordon Robinson Memorial Trophy - well shot.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

Welsh Junior AE Biddulph was very close behind with 99/292 and took the John Osbourne Junior shield for highest scoring under 21 Welsh shooter.  AE Biddulph was the highest placed Welsh Junior in the qualifiers this year and could have quite easily gained a place on the senior team with the scores he posted - very impressive.

Highslide JS  Highslide JS  Highslide JS
[Click pictures to enlarge]

The Norman Atkinson Colt trophy for 16 and under was presented to English junior O Huffer - with 97/290, well done to you.

The top 5 man squad for Sunday was the same as the previous day - this time shooting squad 42 - the Welsh Super Squad led by W Palmer.

Squad 42
Peg Name Score
1 W Palmer 97 x 280
2 BJ Owen 100 x 297
3 GW Evans 98 x 293
4 L Jones 99 x 290
5 GD Jenkins 100 x 298

In a quick chat with Gareth Evans from the above squad - Gareth praised all his team members – he said it was an excellent squad with perfect timing and as a result of that they had performed well together all season.   As recent results have shown, they function together like a fine tuned machine.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

English shooter A Coxhead on squad 37 and Welshman GD Jenkins on squad 42 came within one point of the leader with 100/298 – well done both (they were to share second in AA class for their scores).

All eyes looked to the other shooters we come to expect high scores from and they didn’t disappoint – BJ Owen on squad 42 came in with 100/297, J Stafford on squad 48 came in with 99/296 and IW Williams on squad 27 came in with 100/296.

All scores were close, but S Smith still held the lead ..........

There was one person out there shooting the late squad of 49 – yesterdays overall high gun – Dave Hughes – the clubhouse was once again buzzing.  The famed sporting champion was rumoured to be straight at the 50 stage and a small band of fans and followers encouraged him on through the final stages.  When he approached the clubhouse it was handshakes all round – he had done the magic 100/300, no shoot offs needed to crown this champion, as total perfection had secured his title – he was now the 2009 Welsh Open DTL champion and also gained his first cap for the Welsh DTL team. Congratulations Dave, outstanding shooting !   One shoot-off did remain for Dave as he shot off for the Welsh kills over two day's - but Dave completed the clean sweep and won this too !!!

Dave showed everybody this weekend that the sporting disciplines are not the only disciplines he can excel at as he walked away with high gun on the both days and a car full of trophies - The Jones Bros Challenge Shield for Saturday High Gun, The Nobel Industries Open Challenge Cup for High Gun Sunday, The Subaru Welsh Championship Cup (2 days), AE Browning Cup with handles for most Welsh kills over 2 days and finally the AE Browning Cup without handles for points over the two days.

Here follows a selection of photo's depicting Dave Hughes with the various pieces of silverware from a very successful weekend:

Two other items of silverware we have not yet mentioned went to Phil Morgan.  Phil firstly took the Bill Wanklyn Cup for highest qualifying Welsh team member - which he did with his incredible record breaking zero points on count-back.  The second trophy was for the Hugh Jones Presidents Challenge cup which is for the highest first 50 kills on the Saturday shot by a Welsh person.  Phil earned this trophy as a result of winning a shoot off with G Evans, D Baugh and G Seabourne (Emrys Roberts should have also shot off, but wasn't present).  We were lucky to take a picture storyboard of this shoot off before the heavens opened up (and condemned the further shoot offs to under the covers).

ABT Welsh Grand Prix - Griffin Lloyd 12th July

4th A.B.T. Selection Shoot and Welsh Grand Prix.

8 squads turned out yet again.  With a cloudy day and the light changing very quickly it would make shooting very difficult.

On to the shooting - there was some high scoring from a few shooters early on at the fifty stage with Graham Evans starting spritely with a 25 and a 23.  Rob Davies whacked in 2 x 24's and it put both shooters on a 48 x 50.  Phil Morgan was limping behind with a 45 and Neil Jones 1 in front on a 46.

There were other shooters going well at 50, but I cannot remember names - so sorry to those I have missed.  At the end it was Rob, Graham & Charlie on 96 these would be top scores of the day all gaining a valuable zero points for the day.  So it would be these 3 in the shoot off for the Trophy.  The first round as normal would be full use of gun, then if still tied would be single barrel sudden death.  The shoot off only went the one round with Graham Evans becoming victorious with a compelling 25 straight.  Rob Davies ended 22 and Charlie 23.

High Gun & A class Graham Evans 96 + 25

C. Snelgrove 96
R.D. Parry 93

Many thanks to the Lewis family and staff for a great day. Well done to all those who did well in there respective classes.

With four scores now in the team selection should be starting to shape up and with 2 shoots left a Mid Wales competitors will now know what they have to do to achieve their goal if they are to make the A.B.T. team for 2009.

Good luck to you all.

Welsh DTL Team 2009 - Important Team News

A Message from 2009 Team Captain - Phil Morgan:

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate those who have successfully made the Welsh D.T.L. team for 2009.  For those who have internet access I would also appreciate that you to pass the message onto those who have not.

Will Palmer is Team Manager for 2009 and the reins have been passed over to him to sort out the squadding.  I know a lot of you like shooting together so this shouldn't be a problem for those who make the practice day on Sunday.  Nevertheless - not everyone will be pleased, but "hey, you've made the top 25" in Wales to represent your Country at Senior, Lady, Veteran and Junior levels - so well done - you should now be seizing the opportunity with both hands to try and win the Home International like the fellow Welsh shooters did in 1992 on home soil.

You've already seen the England team on the wall at Mid Wales and there are a few new faces to their team as you can see.  We also have a few new faces in the form of New Caps and I would like to welcome them to the team as I know you will be giving 100% on the day for the team, but lets not forget the enjoyment factor as well.  Some of you have travelled the length of the Country to qualify and this is your reward, but the job isn't done just yet. We can win and if you tell yourselves this - then it will be us on the stage taking that big cup and badges.

Some of the medals that are up for grabs for those who don't know are as follows:  Winning Team, High Gun of the Match, 1ST, 2ND, 3RD for Country, the Elliott Alves which is Wales v Ireland as a team and Top scoring 5 man squad. In the categories where there are only 5 shooters (ladies, veterans and juniors) again there are medals and trophies for the high gun individuals and overall - so lots to shoot for.  All this could be yours !

Unfortunately I won't be there on Sunday (as most of you know) - I'm also trying for the A.B.T. team, but I will be there on the Thursday before the big day to answer any questions.

That's all from me so good luck and shoot straight.

Phil Morgan

Record Breaker !!!!!

You may remember from the June 2009 news that we highlighted Trap shooter Phil Morgan for qualifying for the 2009 Welsh DTL team with zero points on count back (thus setting a record) - well it has been done again for another discipline !!!!

At the Olympic Skeet selection shoot held at SW2000 over the past weekend, Tony Grove shot himself into the "zero points" hall of fame by winning his third consecutive shoot with an excellent score of 110x 125.  He also maintained a zero count back score for the Home International Team selections.

He was closely followed today by Jonathan Stepney, who leapfrogged the opposition with an excellent 46x50 to come from 6th place overnight and grab silver position.

Julian Jeremy and Richard Stepney tied for third place with 105 a piece.

This leaves Tony in unassailable position in the Welsh Selection shoots, but will Pam be happy at having to clean the Trophy for the next 12 months.

Many congratulations Tony on a record breaking achievement !

Many congratulations must also go to Malcolm Allen (who joined the Olympic Skeet zero points hall of fame in 2005), who has been selected to represent GB at the forthcoming European Championships and World Championships, ably accompanied by his wife and Welsh member Elena.

Best of luck to you both in both competitions.

Welsh DTL Grand Prix (Two Day) - Breaking News

Congratulations go to Welsh shooter Dave Hughes - who dominated the Welsh two day event held at Mid Wales on the 4th and 5th July.

On the Saturday event Dave posted a 99/296 to be joint top scorer of the first day and was to take overall High Gun.

On the Sunday, Dave was up against things as a 299 had been posted early on squad 11.  Dave shot on one of the last squads of the day "squad 49" and a band of fans and followers watched him shoot consecutive 25/75's to reach the magic 100/300 and be crowned 2009 Welsh DTL Champion.  Dave was also to earn his first cap for the Welsh DTL team.

Well done Dave, impressive shooting - we wish you every success in the future.

Mid Wales Shooting Centre - Sixth DTL Welsh Qualifier - Sunday 28th June 2009

The sun was out in full force for this - the sixth DTL Welsh qualifier held at Mid Wales Shooting Centre.  Following this shoot, there is only the Welsh DTL grand prix two day event before the qualifiers end for another year (doesn't time fly) - therefore people are trying to make these last few shoots count.

After the first wave there were some mixed results coming in - perhaps the heat had suited some more than others, but there were also some pretty impressive high scores posted as well.  AG Jones on squad 4 and RD Parry on squad 14 both posted scores of 100 x 298, so it was up to the rest of the shooters to equal or improve on this as the day progressed.  KT Gunter on squad 2 came in hot on their heels with a very close 100 x 297.

As some of the mid day squads come in - a score of 100 x 297 was posted by L Jones on squad 17, with GD Jenkins close behind posting a 100 x 296 (also on 17).  Squad 17 weren't phased by the heat - some "hot shooting" (I apologise for that pun) came from these guys as the whole squad were near the top of the leader-board:

Squad 17
Peg Name Score
1 W Palmer 98 x 288
2 BJ Owen 99 x 293
3 GW Evans 99 x 293
4 L Jones 100 x 297
5 GD Jenkins 100 x 296

On squad 21 - Welsh junior GL Roberts made further claim to his team place with the leading Welsh junior score at that point with 99 x 293.

David Hughes - Former World Fitasc/Sporting champion and the 2009 Grand Masters Champion - was present on the last few squads in the hope of a DTL team score after his previous 100 x 297.

RT Gudrat was also shooting the afternoon squads and started on squad 29 with a 75, followed by a 74 at the 50 stage.  Shooting on squad 31 was top Welsh junior AE Biddulph who had also started his first 50 with a 75 and a 74.   It was the talk of the clubhouse - some big hitters were out there and posting the scores necessary, was the 100 x 298 safe ???

AE Biddulph was biting at the leaders heels and came in with a brilliant 100 x 297 and was leading Junior for the day.  RT Gudrat came in with 100 x 295 and all other scores for the later squads were beneath this, so the original leaders of AG Jones and RD Parry were to remain the highest scorers of the day.

After a shoot off, AG Jones took the high gun prize and RD Parry took the AA first place - well done to both you.
