NEWS / REPORTS JULY 2007

Welsh ABT Grand Prix 2007

This years Grand Prix (having been reorganised) was held at Mid Wales Shooting Ground over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd July. It also incorporated the last selection shoot for inclusion into the Welsh Team to travel to Ireland in September. The event was poorly supported with only 17 competitors, whether this was to do with members having to work on Saturday or the forecast of further inclement weather who knows ?

Those who did attend put on a good display over testing targets, with Trevor Griffiths leading the field after the first day with 94, closely followed by Gareth Hill on 93, Andrew Harris on 91.

The second day if anything weather wise was worse than the first, with wind and heavy prolonged showers. Credit goes to those who posted 25 straights in such conditions notably Jackie Lewis.

We would like to thank Arthur and is staff for a well run shoot, Sam Brooks and John Hall for attending and assisting with the presentation.

The final positions were as follows:-

Seniors
1st G. Hill
2nd R. Long
3rd A. Harris

Veterans
1st T. Griffiths
2nd G. Stevenson
3rd B. Smith

Ladies
1st J. Lewis
2nd M. Lloyd

Juniors
1st T. Costin

The team to represent Wales  (in no particular order), is as follows.

Type Name(s)
Seniors G. Hill (Capt.), M. Heywood, P. Dando, C. Snelgrove, A. Harris, I. Costin, R.Parry, J. Campbell (New Cap), S.R. Lloyd, A. Kelly, N.Jones, and R.Long.

(who now has achieved double international honours this year. Well done Tom).

Team Manager will be Huw Williams.

National Skeet - "Welsh Open"

This year, the format for the National Skeet Welsh Open was different.  A 200 bird two day event was organised and held at Telpyn Shooting Ground - Amroth, on the 21st and 22nd of July.  Considering the weather (which had half of England under water), it was relatively kind to the 40+ shooters who turned up to shoot.

Notable "High Scoring" on the Saturday came from John Thomas, who set the standard for the Seniors with a well deserved 100 straight followed closely by Tom Hayes with a 99.  Carol Francis led the Ladies with a 95 and Junior Rhys Evans finished on a 98.

The following day, everyone was wondering if a) the weather would hold again and b) more importantly....... would JT would become affectionately be known as 'Two Ton Thomas' !  Unfortunately - only one of the previous statements read true as JT only managed a 98 but that still gave him the overall Welsh High Gun and the Welsh National Skeet Open High Gun trophy.

Carol maintained her form and put in an impressive 97 to take the Ladies title for the second year running.

Although Rhys was beaten on the final day by Shane Wilson (who shot a brilliant 99) - Rhys still took the overall Junior High Gun trophy.

The Veterans trophy went back to North Wales with Tom Hayes who finished the day on a 93.

Welsh Involvement in U.T.G.B. Selection Shoots (Continued from May News)

The third venue this year was at Newham Park on the 26th and 27th May and the conditions were good over both days considering the summer we are having.

Four Welsh members took part, Chris Belcher, Cheryl Gizzi, Denis Brown and Roy Long, and the scores after the first day were Chris on 93, Cheryl 89, Roy 85 and Denis who even impeded with illness posted a 64.
The final scores after the second day were Chris 180, Cheryl 178, Roy 173 and Denis who had to admit defeat due to tiredness and only shoot 50 targets on the second day 95.  I think everyone who knows Denis would join me in wishing both he and is dear wife Connie (who herself as not been in the best of health lately) a speedy recovery. High gun for the event was Kevin Borley on 196.

On to the fourth venue and only two Welsh entrants, Cheryl Gizzi and Roy Long which was held at Southern Counties on the 16th and 17th June - again in fair to good weather (haven’t we been lucky).  Scores after the first day, Cheryl 85 and Roy 89.
Final scores were Cheryl 176 and Roy 181 which gave him 4th in C class. High gun was E. Ling on 196.

The most recent venue has been SW2000 - which was held on the 14th and 15th July, which seven Welsh members attended.  Namely Roland Hill, Denis Saunders, Nigel Hawyes, Nap Cook, Cheryl Gizzi, Roy Long and Mr. L.D. Davies (my apologies Mr. Davies as I don’t know your first name).
The weather this time wasn’t so kind to us first cold but dry, but second day horrendous high wind and heavy rain. Scores after the first day were Roland 69 (after which Roland in words which contains some expletives what 28 gram cartridges were doing to him and what I could do with them).  Denis 73, Nigel 78, Nap 78, Cheryl 78, Roy 85 and Mr. Davies 65.
The final scores were Roland 193 a very credible 94 (back to 24 gram) Denis 142, Nigel 162, Nap 158, Cheryl 154, Roy 175 and Mr. Davies 129. High gun for the event and my hat goes off to him was Chris Tate with 197, well shot Chris.

Reflection of the 2007 DTL International

Well done to all those who participated at the prestigious 2007 home international at Bywell.

A remarkable standard of high scoring from all five countries made this a difficult one to win for Wales.

Wales scoring 5880 x 6000 was a great achievement, but it wasn't quite good enough.  But for those statisticians out there - this score would have been good enough to win the event last year out in Culbann and for the past previous two years  !!!  So all is not lost - in fact there is a plus as we too have raised our game, but we are not quite there yet !

With England shooting an average of 297 per 20 shooters, Northern Ireland 296.1 Ireland 294.2 and Wales a 294 (unfortunately I haven't got Scotland's final tally) you can see as a DTL shooter that DTL shooting has become a precise discipline with mental and physical preparation also being necessary as well as the obvious ability to shoot.

Once again congratulations to all the winners of the weekend in all categories and keep practising  :)

I was proud to stand shoulders alongside you all and I wish you all the best for the rest of this season and next season.

Regards - Phil Morgan.

Message from Two Times British Open DTL Champion Phil Morgan

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate those who have successfully qualified to represent our country at the forth coming D.T.L. International at Bywell.  With a massive amount of high scores being shot throughout the qualifying campaign I feel as a D.T.L. shooter we have a good chance of winning the event.

A greater applause must also go to the new caps in from the Seniors to the Ladies, Veterans and Juniors.

As members of the W.C.T.S.A. you may or may not have heard but Tim Howells has resigned as D.T.L. rep and would like to thank him for all his hard work.

Baz Owen must also get a mention as stepping in to the team managers job at such short notice and I dare say he will do us proud as John Burton has done in the past and I wish him a speedy recovery.

Regards - Phil Morgan.
