2012 Olympics - Shooting Information

National Technical Officers for the Olympic Games 2012

You may have seen the notice of the appointment of Discipline Managers for the Olympic Games 2012 and a brief statement of their role and responsibilities, an early one of which is the “Identification and Training” of potential National Technical Officials, (NTO’s), to help with the delivery of the shooting events.  Their tasks include selection and appointment of Range-Officers and Referees for the various disciplines, plus officials for Equipment Control, Classification, and other necessary supporting duties.  The official Juries and Technical Delegate will be appointed by the ISSF.  Individuals wishing to be appointed as an NTO will need to be the holder of a ‘British Shooting’ or equivalent National judges licence as a minimum qualification.  Active holders of ISSF ‘A’ or ‘B’ licences are naturally invited to apply.  Please note that if you do not yet hold such a licence it is still possible to qualify for one, as courses can be arranged in the UK provided that there is sufficient justification.  Details of such courses, and how to apply, can be viewed on the NSRA website.

Applications are therefore invited for consideration for appointment as an NTO, either by letter or email, (not just by telephone please-if known), stating their discipline preference, present or intended judging qualifications, and a ‘CV’ of their current and former activities and experience in connection with organising or officiating at National and Open shooting competitions in the UK or Internationally.

Send applications to;

Include full contact details, especially email addresses if possible, as this will be the preferred method of further communication.

In Memory of Mike Lees

Michael John Lees

On the 7th February 2009, Michael John Lees of Brithdir passed away quietly in his sleep at Dolgellau Community Hospital.  Mike fought a long and brave fight against cancer which he finally lost at the far too young age of 63.

After having shot with Mike for the last 15 years or so, I can genuinely say that Mike was one of the nicest people I have ever met.

Mike shot for the County of Gwynedd for many years as a Senior and in his later years as a Veteran.

We travelled the length and breadth of Wales shooting for the County and win or lose we had a fantastic time.

Mike always travelled to shoots in his beloved sporty MG, with his trusty shooting companion Anthony by his side holding on for dear life.

Mike won many trophies over the years but his crowning achievement was winning the Veterans High Gun and Veterans Team Trophy at the All Round County finals at Mid Wales a couple of years ago (2007).

Highslide JS

For  many years Mike helped run the Skeet Shoot at the Trawsfynydd Power Station and he spent many a weekend either working or practising his shooting on his beloved Skeet Range.  His leadership and hard work helped create the only Skeet Range in the County of Gwynedd and for this the members will always be in his debt.  It’s such a pity so few turned up for his funeral at the Aberystwyth Crematorium, but I guess that is a sign of the times.

During the last year or so Mike struggled to keep on shooting, but carry on he did as he was a determined, brave and resourceful man.  He converted an old Golf trolley into a gun and bag carrier so he could carry on shooting for as long as possible.

He was a great wit and had an infectious giggle that would have the whole room laughing in a matter of minutes.

Mike presented a Perpetual Trophy to the Gwynedd Sporting High Gun a year or so ago which bears his name, which will ensure his name will carry on forever in the Sport he loved so much.

Shooting in Gwynedd will never be the same as Mike will be sorely missed, we are all so proud and grateful to have known him as a true friend.

Fond and lasting memories from:  Ken Griffiths.
