2007 DTL County Final - Mid Wales Shooting Centre - October 7th 2007

The Inter-Counties DTL Final took place at Mid Wales Shooting Centre on the 7th October and as always it was well attended with 6 counties competing and over 90 shooters taking part.

Gwent were hoping to keep the County shield that they took from Clwyd last year and it was obvious that Clwyd had no intentions of that happening!!  And when you have a shooter called Tony Jones from Clwyd, that was going to make Gwent's job even harder for them.  Tony shot a tremendous 100ex298 to put Clwyd on their way to take the shield back and it also gave Tony the Senior High Gun for the day - well done Tony - very impressive !
His nearest senior team competitor was Dave Harrison from Mid Glamorgan who on a 100ex296 did give him the Captains cup though, although on previous years - a score like this might have won him the high gun outright so he was very unlucky.

Clwyd senior team were consistent in their shooting and with 5 shooters all shooting 99 and above, the gap was widening.

There was a little tussle going on for the ladies High Gun with Deena Griffiths from Dyfed and Ann Butler from Mid Glamorgan and if Deena had settled a little quicker on her first round then she may well have taken it but Ann repeated her steady performance from 2005 and took the trophy home with her along with the winning ladies team shield that she shares with Gale Morgan. Quite a winning ladies team there, as the same pair won it last year as well - well done ladies - excellent !

There is a junior from Dyfed who seems to be going from strength to strength - Oliver West.  Oliver finished on a brilliant 98ex291 to take the Junior cup and I think that may well have been a first for Dyfed (and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong there!) and together with his team mate Lloyd, they also took the Junior shield back home with them.  Congratulations both and we wish you every success for the future.

Another double was Mid Glamorgan's veterans.  Roy Wedlake on 100ex297, took the Veterans High Gun and his pairing with Tony Clough was a winning one as they together won the team event 7 points ahead of the nearest team - which was Clwyd.   Roy's score was knocking on the door of the seniors high gun score - excellent shooting and well done to Roy and his veteran partner.

There was only one shoot-off at the close which was to determine who had the Gwent overall High Gun shield and that was between Captain Dale Oram and Nigel Hawyes.  First round saw them both on 25ex72 but the second round was enough for Dale to just pip Nigel with a 25ex73 compared to Nigel's 25ex72 - excellent shooting both !
Gwent's impressive scoring duo are pictured below - with Gwent county co-ordinator Bill James.

Maybe some of the other County Co-ordinators could arrange some High Gun trophies for their individual county High Guns to add a little bit more competition within the individual teams ?

At the end of the day - when the scores were all added, checked and double checked (thanks to Rita and staff in the office) it really was quite a resounding win for Clwyd with 51 points ahead of Gwent.

So the winning County shield travels back to Clwyd but I'm sure Gwent and the other counties will be back again next year to have another go!  The victorious 2007 Welsh County DTL Champions "Clwyd" are shown below:

We must thank Angie Goodman for all the hard work put into producing another excellent County event which does Welsh shooting very proud.  We must also thank our number crunchers and statisticians - Rita and assistants in the office for their work throughout the day.

Many thanks go to all the Williams family and all of their ground staff at Mid Wales Shooting Centre for a superb days shooting.

As per usual though - these events wouldn't be nothing without the camaraderie, banter and competitive spirit of you the shooters - thanks again everybody for your attendance - you have done your sport proud, see you again next year and lets encourage even more to attend and make it even better.
