2006 DTL County Final - Llandegla Shooting Ground - October 22nd 2006

After months of selection shoots, the Welsh county DTL finalists converged on Llandegla Shooting Ground to do battle.  The County DTL final is the last major team event on the Welsh DTL shooters calendar.

A typical autumnal day presented itself on the Sunday, with generally light winds (and the occasional gust), changing light conditions in the form of sunshine and overcast conditions - coupled with the odd light shower (basically we had it all).

John Roberts and staff greeted arriving shooters in a packed clubhouse.  The teams/squads were posted on the wall and the shoot promptly started at 10:00 am - with 5 "under cover" traps running (incase the bad weather forecast came true) - enabling the first wave of 15 squads to be put through first.

Due to the Welsh county final shoot being a well represented competition, there was also a "Yorkshire" presence in the form of P. Chaplow, J. Bellamy and friends who were hoping to reap the rewards of a large turnout.

The seniors teams scores made interesting reading throughout the competition.  Powys, Gwent and Clwyd all looked strong in the early stages.
Across all of the counties teams - most of the first team senior squads were posting a lot of red ink - which as we know indicates top scoring, so it was going to be a tough hard fought day all round !

At the 75 stage Clwyd were lying in second place behind Gwent - with Clwyd 28 points a drift.  Gwent looked strong and the amount of red ink on their team scores looked like a world beating international squad.  Even after all the teams scores were posted (including the second wave of shooters) - the results were to remain that Gwent were to stay out in front and become the 2006 Welsh county senior team champions and Clwyd were runners up.  Both teams were later presented with first and second place shields to mark their achievement - congratulations to everybody.

The runner's up - the Clwyd county DTL team is pictured below:

The victorious 2006 Welsh senior county DTL champions "Gwent" are pictured below:

Overall Team Scores were as follows:
County Score
Gwent 2624
Clwyd 2578
Powys 2539
Dyfed 2501
Gwynedd 2497
Mid Glamorgan 2484

Not all counties presented a full veterans team - so it was to be fought out between Clwyd, Mid Glamorgan and Gwynedd.  Gwynedd went out on the last wave of squads, so nobody really knew who would win until the presentation.
The victorious veterans were Gwynedd, who consisted of MH Mc'Conville and JH Parry.  Gwynedd's veterans team winning score was 584 ex 600.

Our current British DTL champion was present at the County final - top Welsh trap shooter Phil Morgan.  Phil has won the overall Welsh county high gun prize for the last two years running and this year decided to take a back seat and instead was there for support for his partner Gail who was shooting alongside Ann Butler in the ladies section for Mid Glamorgan.  And what a result for Mid Glamorgan- both Ann and Gail won the ladies county team competition for 2006 - well done.

The Juniors team title was contested between Dyfed, Mid Glamorgan and Powys.  Dyfed won with a score of 559 and the team consisted of TL Evans and GW Davies - what an excellent result.  Powys juniors were very unlucky because they only trailed behind by 6 points.

The photo below shows some of the team winners and individual winners:

After seeing such high scoring in the seniors squads, the fight for the county high gun prize was always going to be down to the wire.  From the outset - popular former international Eric Davies from the Clwyd team was posting consistent scores and dropping very few barrels during the competition.  He finished his last line with a 25 ex 75 to finish was an amazing 100 ex 298.  This was the highest score of the county competition - beating RJ Chivers from the impressive Gwent team by a single point.

You may recall we mentioned the Yorkshire contingent had come to compete in this well turned out event.  The battle for overall high gun was a very close run thing - with P. Chaplow still on for a 298 on his last line.  Unfortunately for Chaplow, he dropped a full bird on his last line to finish with a mighty impressive 295, but it was not enough - Eric Davies had not only won the individual county championship title, but also took the overall shoot high gun prize money - well done Eric, an outstanding performance !

Eric Davies was to receive the Browning cup for being overall individual 2006 County champion (high gun) and a shield for being high gun for Clwyd - he is pictured below:

Clwyd were also to be successful with the overall ladies county high gun prize, which was won by Caz Trehearn with an impressive 95 ex 278.  Well done Caz, a fine finish to your prize filled season.

The overall Veterans High Gun prize was won by Gwynedd's MH Mc'Conville with a remarkable 99 ex 293 - what impressive shooting.  Here is a quick snap of Mick receiving his trophy from Brian Davies and Angie Goodman inside the clubhouse:

The Junior High Gun county champion title for 2006 was to go to GW Griffiths of the Powys team with an excellent score of 99 ex 290 - what a talent for the future !  Well done, we wish you every success for future seasons.  The picture of the junior high gun champion is shown on the individual and team group photo shown previously.

After his recent success with the winning Powys All Round County team, Brian Davies was also to make his mark on the DTL county final.  Brian led the way in his team and as such posted the top DTL score for Powys with a 98 ex 292 and got his deserved congratulatory kiss from Angie and the high gun shield for Powys - well done Brian.  Brian was to later pick up prize money for winning his class as well.

Finally - we must thank John Roberts the ground owner and his staff for the hospitality, excellent shooting and superb food (especially the beef sarnies for dinner).
We must also thank Angie Goodman for all the effort she puts in behind the scenes to bring these county finals to fruition and to the County co-coordinators who organize the selection shoots for their shooters to enable them to compete in the finals.
We must also thank Brian Davies for all the number crunching throughout the day, which made for a very efficient early finish - with most people leaving around 3:30 after all presentations had been concluded.
Finally, thanks go to "you the shooters" who support this event and make it what it is.....lets make it an even better one next year and try and get some more "full" veterans, ladies and junior teams to add to the competitive spirit.
