All Round Report 2016
The competitors travelling to Mid Wales on Sunday 16th October for the All Round County Final must have feared the worst with strong winds and lashing rain affecting both South and North travellers, either the picturesque Trannon Valley was in the eye of the storm or the weather god was looking down on the 77 competitors from Gwynedd, West Glamorgan, Dyfed, Powys, Gwent and for the first time a team from Anglesey, or as they would like to be called as they declared Brexit long ago Ynys Mon. As the competitors made their way to the first layouts at 10.00 am the sun made a welcome appearance and apart from an occasional shower the day was relatively dry.
Would another County break Powys` domination of this trophy? The first in with a 24 on S/B DTL was West Glamorgan’s captain Keith Davies. Dyfed`s Lloyd Morris also posted a 24 on the same discipline, fellow Dyfed shooters Meredith Owen and Tony Stevens, Gwynedd`s Dennis Evans, Gwent`s Jonathon Kendall, Powys` Richard Hughes, all went one better to straighten the Skeet layout.
Some stand out scores at the half way stage were Aled Naylor Anglesey, 48x50 Jonathon Kendall Gwent 49x50, catching my at this point was Powys colt 14 year old Annalise Evans with a 46x50. Gwent’s lady shooter Laura Thomas and Dyfed`s Deena Irving were matching each other shot for shot.
In the senior category Powys team members Richard Hughes and Peter Humphries were also setting the bar in the different disciplines. Richard over the Skeet, Sporting and S/B had not dropped one target. Peter although straightening the sporting layout had dropped a target on S/B and Skeet.
The Powys senior team members were scoring consistently in the 20`s for team honours, like wise the Powys Colt’s of Annalise Evans and Morgan Williams were on the 20`s mark. While there was a lack of Junior teams, the Juniors of Gwynedd Geraint Matulla , Dyfed`s Ben Stevens and West Glamorgan`s Kristian Thomas were scoring well in the Sporting and Skeet disciplines , but all of the Juniors struggled in the Trap disciplines. Anglesey `s Veterans of Dave Tavennor and Mike Harrison were also scoring well in Sporting and Skeet, ABT seemed to be a bogey stand for everybody with the exception of Gwent’s Captain Jonathon Kendall who was the only one to straighten that layout, not surprisingly as all of the teams consist mainly of Sporting and Skeet shooters. Gwent’s Super Vet`s of Geoff Seaborne and Phillip Van-Male were bucking that trend and with a 22 and 24 respectively on the dreaded ABT stand.
ABT mentioned in the presence of Richard Hughes would not go down well as it was there he dropped his only three targets of the day to finish on a 97, County team member Peter Humphries who had dropped one on S/B, one on Skeet and one on ABT to also finish on 97. The shoot off for the Overall County and Powys trophies
was held over an unused sporting lay out, the high tower from the car park, with Richard shooting first ,it looked as if these targets were out of range but Richard finished with 3, Peter was also having difficulty in finding the range and finished with 1.
The presentation of trophies followed quickly after the last shot was fired, the winning senior team once again was Powys.
