Reports on the County Finals kindly supplied by Allan Jones.
Inter Counties ABT final at South Wales 2000 September 10th 2017
The first of the trap finals for the Welsh counties was the ABT held at Mike Amodeo`s SW2000 ground, the weather forecast was spot on with the rain and gales to sweep over the ground as the day wore on.
It was a very disappointing turn out with only 28 competitors from three Counties making an appearance Gwent, Mid Glamorgan and Dyfed, with out any of the counties fielding full senior teams, only two Veteran teams and one Super veteran team. Not a lady Junior or Colt in sight. Anglesey’s coordinator had worked his socks off to get a team down to SW2000 but to no avail. There was a clash with the Rolex ABT competition at Fauxdegla but this competition is aimed at encouraging the grass roots shooters.
I do not think that there is another sport or discipline in which rival shooters will take time out to give honest and helpful advice to a competitor from another County, one shooter’s score increased from 7 yes 7 on one round to two 18`s by following the advice of a shooter from another county.
Although this competition as I stated earlier is for grass roots shooters there was a number of Internationals in attendance fresh from their exploits at the Home International in Ireland, and it was Gwent`s Richard Hillier setting the pace with a 23 after the first round, and another after the second round to hold a 1 point lead over County team member Phil Dando at the half way point .
In the Veterans class Dyfed`s Viv Bowen and John Davies were valiantly hanging on to Gwent`s veterans of Nigel Hawyes and Trevor Griffiths with a 8 point difference at the halfway stage.
At the three quarter point in the senior class Richard and Phil were now neck and neck on 68 apiece , The captains cup was a very closely contested affair with Dyfed`s Teg Rees, Mid Glamorgan`s Martin Tozer and Gwent`s Eddie Donovan on 59. 60 and 56 respectively.
With the light conditions and wind changing after each round and no sign of the conditions abating it was all to play for in the last rounds. The Gwent veterans pulled away from the Dyfed team to take the Veterans trophy. Phil Dando`s final round of 23 saw off Richard’s 21 to take the honours in the senior class. The Captains cup how ever would require a shoot off with Eddie’s final round of 23 and Martin’s 19 leaving them tied on 79 one ahead of Teg `s final score of 78.
After the shoot off for the Captains Cup it was Mid Glamorgan’s Martin Tozer 18 to 15 in the final that saw that trophy go to Mid Glamorgan.
The presentation of trophies was conducted by the Chairman of the WCTSA Daff Davies and all that was left was to find out which was the Winning County in third place came Dyfed on 427 followed by Mid Glamorgan’s 449 to Gwent’s 488.
Senior HG Phil Dando 91 Gwent
Captains cup Martin Tozer 79 + 18 Mid Glamorgan
