2017 Inter Counties DTL Final
The penultimate final of 2017, the Inter counties DTL was held at Mid Wales Shooting Centre on the 1st of October the 115 shooters from Anglesey, Dyfed, Clwyd, Mid and South Glamorgan, Gwent, Gwynedd and last years winning county Powys were greeted by a grey overcast sky with the forecast for heavy rain and winds to come.
The first wave of shooters produced 8 perfect 25/75`s Anglesey’s Michael McConville, Gwent’s Kevin Gunter , David Lynch, and David Medlicott, Powys` Luke Murray and Michael Russell, Clwyd`s Karl Jones and Elis Jones.
Ominously at the half way stage it was only Junior Elis Jones on a 50/150 would the weather intervene Ellis` progress, but the skies were if anything became brighter. In the other classes at the half way point Dyfed`s Lyn Turpin 48/137 and Cynthia Faulkner 42/120 were heading Mid Glamorgan`s Emma Simpson 35/91 and Claire Lewis 47/137 by 29 points. The margin in the veterans class was 11 points between Powys` Gwyn Parry and Rob Parry and Gwent`s Nigel Hawyes and Richard Hillier. It was even closer with the Super Vets with a mere 5 points separating Powys` Dai Ricketts and Ken Price and Clwyd`s Tom Devaney and David Jones.
The Juniors Clwyd`s Elis and Owain Jones were in a class of their own with only 4 points dropped over the first 50, with Mid and South Glamorgan`s Callum Croft and Tom Boles valiantly trying to hang on. While Dyfed, Mid and South Glamorgan and Gwynedd had Colts entered Anglesey were the only County to have a Colt team.
As the final rounds were taking place the young man from Clwyd Elis was showing the exceptional form he has displayed all year with a perfect score of 75/225.
Waiting for a slip in the chasing pack Gwent’s Kevin Gunter 2 points in arrears, Clwyd`s Arfon Evans a further point away.
Dyfed`s ladies team had pulled further ahead to finish 43 points clear of Mid and South Glamorgan. The Powys veterans had the momentum and finished ahead of Gwynedd`s veterans of Russ Thomas and John Richards who had overtaken the team from Gwent. The gap between Powys` Super Vets had grown marginally to 8 over Clwyds team; The Juniors of Clwyd had a massive 80 point difference to be expected with Elis in full flow in his last year as a Junior. The only blot on Elis` day was necessity of a second barrel on his 97th target. Kevin Gunter also dropped a point on his last line to maintain the status quo. However that would be enough to take the senior trophy at the end of the day
At the end of another faultless day at mid Wales it was left to the Chairman of the WCTSA Daff Davies to present the trophies. To the winning County captain who even without the aid of Elis` score, Clwyd were the county winners for 2017,
The winning Veteran team Powys B team of Rob Parry and Gerwyn Parry. The Super Veteran trophy also going the way of Powys as well with Dai Ricketts and Ken Price. The ladies of Dyfed retained the trophy for another year, The captains Cup also went the way of Dyfed with Lee Turpin with a 99x294 Juniors trophy winners Clwyd and the Colts trophy to the Anglesey team of Cai Roberts and Ferdy Norlander
