August 2010 Shooter Profile - Welsh Junior Shooter - Gwyn Roberts

Our 16th shooter profile this month and we have the very talented Welsh Gwynedd junior shooter - Gwyn Roberts.  Gwyn is a regular shooter on the DTL circuit and has had an amazing season which started last Autumn when he was crowned Welsh Junior County DTL Champion, but things just got better after this - he had some incredible scores in his Welsh qualifiers and took the title of Welsh Junior DTL champion in this years Welsh DTL Grand Prix.  The success didn't end there, but we won't spoil the rest of the article by giving anymore away - so its over to Gwyn.

Question 1. What disciplines do you shoot?

Gwyn>>  DTL is my primary discipline, but I’ve also had a go on Skeet, Sporting, ABT and OT.

Question 2. What type of gun are you using?

Gwyn>>  Currently I shoot with a Beretta ASE, which I’m very happy with.  I’ve also used a Beretta 682.

Question 3. Is there a specific ammunition you favour or tend to use?

Gwyn>>  I’m using Super Gems at the moment, simply because they’re the best deal I can get!! Although I’ve used many others in the past, but unfortunately they’re now too expensive.

Question 4. What's your background in shooting, when did you start, where did you start?

Gwyn>>  I’ve been involved in shooting from an early age from helping to feed game birds at home, progressing to be allowed as a beater from the age of 8 years. I took up clay shooting at the age of 12 years, when the beaters arranged a clay shoot on the farm. My father then took me to a local sporting clay ground and this is where my enthusiasm for clays started. I shoot game over the Winter months and vermin all year. I’ve also been deerstalking in Scotland and safari hunting in South Africa for the plains antelopes.

Question 5. List of your achievements to date?

Gwyn>> Junior team member in two Home Internationals and achieving runner-up on both occasions.  Prominent wins listed below:

1. Brian Davies Perpetual Challenge Cup for the British Open DTL Welsh Junior high Gun
2. Wilhelm Hennich Cup for Junior DTL Welsh High Gun
3. The Gordon Robinson Memorial Trophy Junior High Gun at the Welsh Open
4. Inter County DTL Junior High Gun
5. John Osbourne Junior Trophy
6. Gwynedd County DTL Junior High Gun at the County Finals

Question 6. Most memorable shoot/performance?

Gwyn>> Winning the above and shooting my first 300 a few weeks ago at Mid Wales.  The recent European Championships at Southern Counties where the Welsh Junior Team got a Silver Medal. Well done to Barry and Aaron and also to Alex for winning the overall Junior European Championship.

Question 7. Who are your close shooting friends?

Gwyn>> I normally shoot with Adrian, Len, Russell, John Bach, Ivor and the other junior team members – Alex and Barry.

Question 8. Influences, coaches or people who've helped your shooting?

Gwyn>> I’ve been lucky to have been given guidance and advice from a number of people, which include firstly my dad, (who also shot DTL in his teens) and those mentioned above. A special thanks to Adrian and Len for giving me lifts to the clay grounds on a weekly basis, which has been invaluable!

Question 9. Top tip for your chosen discipline?

Gwyn>> Shoot them all and win!

Highslide JS

Question 10. What are your hopes for the future ?

Gwyn>> More funding. It’s an extremely popular sport, which deserves more recognition to a wider audience.

Question 11. What are "your personal ambitions and goals" within shooting for the foreseeable future ?

Gwyn>> I would like to win the Junior Home International Team event.  I’m really looking forward to the World DTL Championships at Mid Wales in 2012. I intend to carry on shooting and try other disciplines to competition level.

Many thanks for taking the time to do this shooter profile Gwyn, I'm sure it will be an inspiration to fellow young Welsh shooters.  All of us here at the WCTSA wish you every success for the future and hope all your ambitions and goals are achieved.

National Skeet Home International - Telpyn Shooting Ground - August 28th 2010

A windy day for the home international made for some tricky targets, but the Welsh ladies still come up trumps.

Deena Griffiths shot the highest ladies score of the day and was crowned 2010 National Skeet Ladies Home International champion.   In the 30 years or so that the National Skeet home internationals have been running, only two individual Welsh ladies wins have taken place and believe it or not, the last one was in 2007 in Lakenheath and this was also by Deena.  Incredible shooting Deena, well done.

But the glory didn't end here, Deena's excellent scoring almost certainly helped the Welsh ladies take the team title as well.  Congratulations to all the Welsh ladies, excellent news !

Welsh Open Sporting Shoot - HartEvents Shooting Ground - August 8th 2010

Thank you to sponsors of the event - Gwatkin Cider who donated a number of special presentation packs of their finest cider.

High Gun of the Shoot was Chris Biddlecombe who scooped the £200 High gun prize with a score of 96.

Welsh High Gun was Luke Llewellin on a score of 92.  Well done Luke excellent shooting !

The shoot off for 15th place in the Senior section of the Welsh team took place between Doug Livsey, Grant Pendleton, and Paul Heywood.  Grant won the place in the nail biting shoot off.  Doug Livsey and Paul Heywood had a shoot off to decide the first reserve, this was won by Doug Livsey.

36th Home International 2010 - Olympic Skeet

First of all, I would like to thank Clive Bramley & all the staff at Doveridge shooting ground for their hospitality during the international.

Going into the Home International......(with some good individual scores throughout the selection shoots).........we all had high expectations and you say to yourself "I've cracked it", but Olympic Skeet has a funny way of biting back hard......and it hurts !

With only 4 scores in the 90's for all of the shooters, it was a tough and challenging shoot.  None of the Welsh squad complained, instead they buckled down and gave their all, right to the end.

Congratulations to Rhys Price - Junior High Gun (87) & also Wales High Gun (87).  We wish him well for the commonwealth games.

Congratulations also to Cerys Evans - Lady High Gun (77)

Runner Up prize in the LJV team event went to:  Cerys Evans, Rhys Price & Roger Harredence.

Cross Engineering Trophy - Wales - Runner Up : Steve Taylor (84)

Overall Winners:

ENGLAND 461
S.IRELAND 431
SCOTLAND 417
WALES 388
N.IRELAND 374

Last, but not least, congratulations must go to Gareth Wrentmore & Del Davies for their 30th successive caps representing Wales in Olympic Skeet.   If anyone deserves an MBE for their contribution to Sport, it must be Gareth and Del.

An enjoyable weekend & we look forward to accepting Southern Irelands invitation for the Home International in 2011.

T RANDS - TEAM MANAGER

ABT Home International - Captains Message

The Welsh Open ABT championships were held on Sunday 15 August at the Mid Wales Shooting Ground, by kind invitation of Arthur Williams and the Williams family, the targets were first class (as per the usual high standard set by the ground) and there were some very creditable scores put in.

This shoot was also the final selection shoot for the Welsh team.  I was informed by the team manager that I was being made the ABT team captain for this years Home International Tournament being held at the Dungannon SG in Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland 10&11 September.  To say that I was elated to be given this honour would be an understatement and I hope that I can do the team, Wales and my own performance justice over the two day competition, I will surely give it my best shot. ( no punn intended! )

May I thank all the ground owners involved this year for setting up the selection shoots, and to congratulate the rest of the team on their qualification, especially the new caps who set themselves a goal and achieved it , well done one and all !

The team are fortunate to have Jason Shannon as manager, he has not only tried and succeeded to qualify but has also collated all the scores from all the selection shoots and done the work behind the scenes organising travel - accommodation, cartridges - gun storage etc etc, thank you Jason for the time and effort that you have put in on our behalf.

We became the runners up last year at North Ayrshire, a great team performance from everyone involved, lets hope that we can go one better this time, I am sure we will all be trying hard to make this happen.

Good luck to everyone !

Graham Evans - 2010 ABT Team Captain

Welsh National Skeet Open 2010

Welsh National Skeet Open

Telpyn shooting ground, in Amroth west Wales hosted this years Welsh Open and the competitors were greeted by warm weather with only the slightest hint of a breeze.

Telpyn (near Amroth) is also hosting this year’s National Skeet International.  The local community will see shooters from all over the UK congregate to complete in the competition and catch up with old friends.  Amroth is steeped in history and is part of the Cistercian way.  At extreme low tide you can still see the Petrified Forest, destroyed when sea levels rose 7000 years ago, while fossilised antlers, nuts, animal bones and Neolithic flints have been discovered.

The shooting began soon after 10.30 and bearing in mind this was the last qualifying shoot, there was a lot riding on it.  Not only was this the Welsh Open, but the Welsh international Skeet team was to be decided for 2010!   A quick look at the previous results would indicate that the first five or six seniors had done enough to secure their place for this year.  The remaining places could have changed and that added up to pressure.  The scores and permutations must have been mulled over many times in the preceding weeks by all concerned, but no clear result could be taken for granted.

At the end of the day there was little movement amongst the top ten seniors.  Congratulations to our three deserving new senior caps Aled Jones,  Lloyd Handley and Chris Ingram.

Captain John Thomas

Once again the day was dominated by the Welsh wizard John Thomas posting his second 100 straight of the season.  Congratulations to John not only for producing a perfect score at the Welsh Open, but also this year is his fifteenth year to represent Wales at the National Skeet International. John has kindly agreed to captain this year’s team to mark his achievement.

Ladies

The Ladies team this year is made up of the well known trio Deena Griffiths, Carol Francis and Angie Goodman.  Carol Francis won the Ladies high gun cup with a suburb 98 closely followed by Deena with a 97.  It was encouraging to see new shooter Dawn Robson post her firs 25 straight at the open, and ended the season not too many points away from the international trio. Well done to all the ladies who took part.

Juniors

Andrew Davey has had a good season and well deserves his new cap, along with fellow junior Katie Cowell.  Both have shown they can shoot exceeding well and post scores to be proud of.  They both have demonstrated the cool and calm attitude much needed to shoot skeet at a high level. Natalie Davies joins them to complete this year’s junior team.  Nat is spending the summer in America and I know is looking forward to returning home and this year’s international.

Veterans

Alan Parkin, Rob Hodson and Brian Wells make up this years veteran team.  Rob is still sporting a cast on his arm that prevented him shooting the open.  He informed me he will be fighting fit come the international.  I’m relieved Rob has a bungalow so it wasn’t too far to fall when he was clearing out his guttering!

Many thanks to Rob Phillips and his family for hosting yet another well run day.  With no hold ups or trap break downs the 47 guns flew through the four rounds.  Congratulations to this years National Skeet Welsh team, especially the new caps, and a big thank you to everyone who took part in the qualifying shoots.

Welsh Mesh Skeet Vest - Warning - Please Read !!!!

It has come to our attention that the new Welsh mesh skeet vests need to be washed differently to the label that is attached inside the vest.  The original labels that have been sewn inside do not take into account that the WCTSA placed orders for a "special custom version" that had a black leather shooting patch (instead of the conventional trim).  As a result of this, conventional washing may cause the black leather patch to run.

We advise therefore that the vest is washed "DRY CLEAN ONLY".

County Coordinator Vacancies

Angie Goodman has asked us to remind people that a few county co-ordinators are still needed for various disciplines.

Remember that  the Counties finals will all be over in the middle of October for another year and selection shoots need to be planned well in advance of these finals.

Sporting Home International Location Change

Although this news has already been published in the WCTSA Sporting International page much earlier in July by Brian Davies, I have also been asked to bring the news to peoples attention in the main news section:

Due to circumstances beyond the control of the CPSA, the Home International shooting venue will now be held at Barrow Heath Sporting Clays, near Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk on Saturday 11th September 2010 and not at Lakenheath CTC as previously advised. Barrow Heath is approx 20 mins from Lakenheath and so all booked accommodation should not need to be moved.

Barrow Heath Sporting Clays is situated alongside the A14, junction 41 between Newmarket and near Bury St Edmunds. (take the Saxham, Risby slip road and follow the “CLAY” signs).

Message from your National County Coordinator

The County qualifiers for the DTL and ABT have started in readiness for the County Finals this year and it wont be long before the All Round qualifiers will start as well. This year we were very fortunate to have some great reports submitted by the County Co-ordinators for the Skeet and the Sporting including some photos as well that even made it into our new section of the Clay Shooting magazine. Our Web Master, Dave Lea, is always looking for things to submit to that magazine as well as our web site, and as the National County Co-ordinator I would love to see you support his efforts by sending him some things in yourselves.

Even if the County co-ordinator is unable to send anything in, then maybe you, as a participant of one of the qualifiers would like to lend a hand and send in some photos or a report and who knows....you might even see yourself in one of the top shooting magazines such as Clay Shooting!

Team Clothing Information

Ann Snelgrove (the secretary) is now holding a new stock of re-designed shooting vests and also a smaller stock of mesh vests for Welsh Team members which now have Cymru Wales on the back (as agreed by the Board). These are supplied by Top Gun clothing, a British registered company.

If you want to reserve a new vest to replace your tired old Welsh vest or fancy a mesh vest for shooting in the summer heat, contact Ann Snelgrove on the the contacts page for more details.

Clay Shooting Magazine

I have been running a magazine column for the Clay Shooting magazine called "Within Wales" for the last 5 months now. It was originally done as a short term test, but it seems now that I will be in for the long haul after being very happy with the initial feedback.

I have attempted to try to make the Within Wales column as varied as possible and to cover as many disciplines as I can. Many people are un-aware that this column exists, so the initial purpose of this message is to bring peoples attention to this.

I would also like to ask people for future contributions, because I publish some content that is not available here on the website (to keep the column fresh).

The column caters for all clay shooting within Wales, so you may see the odd article from other shooting organisations too. The column is being run independently of any other commitments I have.

I hope the shooters of Wales do start to follow the column, as my prime intention is to give a Welsh nation who has a fine set of shooters the publicity they deserve for all their efforts.

David R. Lea - WCTSA Webmaster and Clay Shooting Magazine "Within Wales" columnist.
