April 2010 Shooter Profile - Welsh Veteran Shooter - Doug Price

This is the twelfth shooter profile, hasn't the first twelve 12 months flown ?

The feedback we have had for the shooter profiles has been very positive over the last twelve months, so please keep them coming in.  Feel free to put yourselves forward or any friends you think deserve the exposure, just email over their e-mail address to us and we forward them a series of questions - its that simple !

This month we have a very special profile - an example to us all - Clwyd shooter Doug Price who is still competing at county level at the very young age of 80.

So it's over to Doug:

Question 1. What disciplines do you shoot?

Doug>>  I shoot mainly Skeet and Sporting, occasionally DTL and some ABT.

Question 2. What type of gun are you using?

Doug>>  I shoot a Browning Sporter 325 Grade 5 multichoke, which I find first-class for clays and game alike, although I do have a Beretta Silver Pigeon 2 which I use occasionally for game shoots.  Also, I have a side-by-side and an old .410 "knock-about" gun.

My first real clay shooting gun was a Spanish made Laurona, which un-usually had two double linked triggers - the front trigger if pulled twice fires the bottom barrel first and then the top barrel.  If the back trigger is pulled twice, it fires the top barrel first and then the bottom barrel - a very unusual mechanism !

Question 3. Is there a specific ammunition you favour or tend to use?

Doug>>  No special make of shells, I just use the "best buy" I can get for practice.  For skeet competitions I like Eley VIP's and for Sporting competitions - Eley Olympics.

Question 4.  What's your background in shooting, when did you start, where did you start?

Doug>>  I started shooting with air rifles when I was about 16, shooting on local farms in and around Llangollen.  I then moved onto hammer side-by-sides and then onto hammerless side-by-sides, shooting mainly rabbits and pigeons on the local farms.

With my first clay gun (the Laurona), I started shooting local clay shoots - these were mainly Down the line (ish) format, shot on local farmer's fields.  The manager of the Royal Hotel at Llangollen was a firm supporter of the local club, so after a Sunday morning shoot it was back to the Royal for a big pan of very welcome warm stew !

For these local/informal shoots, the trap and trapper were positioned behind some straw bales and the "quality of the birds" was......erm......variable !!!!  At this time a box of 25 cartridges was £1 and the entry fee for 10 birds was also a £1.

Question 5.  List of your achievements to date?

Doug>>  I qualified for the Clwyd Skeet Team in 2003 at my first attempt in a qualifying shoot, when I was 73, also the Clwyd Veteran High Gun in 2008.

I was especially proud to qualify for the Clwyd Team (2010) during this my 80th year (it's never too late !!!).

Highslide JS

Question 6.  Most memorable shoot/performance?

Doug>>  My most memorable shooting performances have been to qualify for the Clwyd team and to shoot in competitions in such locations as Mid-Wales Shooting Centre against other Welsh Counties and also the very occasional 25 straight !

Question 7.  Who are your close shooting friends?

Doug>>  Llandegla Shooting Ground is a very friendly shooting club run by the new manager Mike Merrington, and I have met very friendly people both local to the club and visitors.

I shoot at the club mostly with my son Mike and meet up regularly with good friends such as John Deary, Hadyn Thomas, Alan/Brenda Barlow, Huw Evans and his son Rhys to name but a few.

Question 8.  Influences, coaches or people who've helped your shooting?

Doug>>  As mentioned before, Llandegla is a very friendly club and there is always someone to lend a hand or give a friendly tip or two on how your shooting is going on the day.

Question 9.  Top tip for your chosen discipline?

Doug>>  PRACTICE and also, enjoy your day - you'll shoot better if you are in a positive frame of mind !

Question 10.   What are your hopes for the future ?

Doug>>  We always try to get new people to come along and have a try at shooting a few clays - most people jump at the opportunity to be introduced to the sport.

My hope is that by introducing new and young people to the sport, it will assure the future of clay pigeon shooting and its clubs.

Question 11.  What are "your personal ambitions and goals" within shooting for the foreseeable future ?

Doug>>  My personal ambition is to try and stay competitive in my 80th year and to enjoy my shooting whether it is clay, game or walked up shooting.

Many thanks Doug, you are a true role model for all our shooters !

All the best for the future and good luck and best wishes from all here at the WCTSA.

Olympic Skeet - International Venue News

There will be considerable Welsh interest at this year's European Championships to be held in Karzan, Russia.

Currently Malcolm Allen, Elena Allen and Cerys Evans are competing in Olympic Skeet at this event, whilst Richard Stepney is doing his first trip as a GB manager.

There may be even further Welsh involvement after the recent GB Trap selection shoot.

More details to follow !

A Party Political Broadcast by the "Welsh DTL Team for more trophies party !!!"

Its that time of the year - elections!   We thought we would lighten things up a bit and would like to present to you a candidate for a new party - "more trophies for the Welsh DTL Team".  Their candidate being none other than Phil Morgan.

So it's over to Phil:

"Shooters it's 2 qualifier shoots down with 6 to go !  The Home International is at Scotland and the targets you have been presented with and shot at over the passed 2 selection's are an indication of what we will be shooting at this years International.

Last year you people made me the proudest Captain ever by achieving what we did as a team last year taking runners up position in every category brilliant.  Now we need to take things to the next level. I have shot with you people for a number of years and can see that as a shooting team we can beat anyone. Individually we have all shot high scores to win different titles on the day.

Yes it is a hobby and you spend your own money to take part, but you have to look at yourselves each and everyone of you that it is only you and the clay.  It's not about beating the Phil Morgan's, Chaplow's  or McKeown's of this world - because if you shoot all your targets then these guys have to shoot all theirs to have a chance of beating you !

So come on lets up our game as individuals and enjoy it.  I can remember Wales winning the Home International in 1992, I think we can win it in Scotland so lets give it a bash what you think?"

By:  Phil Morgan and the "more trophies for the Welsh DTL Team" party.

2nd DTL Welsh International Qualifier - South Wales 2000 - 25th April

This was the second Welsh DTL qualifier and the first of two held in South Wales 2000 this year.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

South Wales 2000 is the home ground of Phil Morgan and after his recent perfect 100 single barrels kills at Southern Counties which give him his first championship title of 2010 "English Single Barrel Champion", he was always going to be the man to beat on home soil !  He's won every high gun at the DTL qualifiers held here since 2006 and won countless qualifiers before this date !

Turnout for this shoot was very good (76 shooters) and due to the kind weather on the Saturday, many shooters from Mid and North Wales travelled down to South Wales 2000 on the Sunday.

RM (Rodger) Faulkner from North Wales had made the journey down and was only one point down on count back after the last qualifier - could he be the man to put the pressure on Morgan ?

The weather for the day was quite changeable - bright sunshine one minute and then overcast the next.  The good news was that except for the odd drizzle shower, it remained dry and the wind wasn't too strong.  The clays were flying true and it was game on here at the second qualifier.

It was clear from looking at the final positions on the scoreboard that some had found their mark with the clays from the outset.  On the first 50, PR Morgan, AG Dore and GO Howells all shared 50x149.  Close behind was PT Pritchard on 50x148 and RT Millichamp 50x147.  RD Parry and AJ Poole both scored 50x146 whilst JTD Howells, DR Lea, APM Vaughan & APS Jones shared 50x145.

As we all know, it not over until its over and the last 50 would sort everybody out.

Some remained at the top of the leader-board at the 100 stage and others disappeared down the list.

Phil Morgan was again to continue his unbeaten run here since 2006 after only dropping one more barrel on his last 50, which give him an incredible 100x298 and more importantly zero points again on count back on his second qualifier !

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

The closest scores to Phil Morgan's were Welsh shooters RT Millichamp (99x293) and GO Howells (98x293), with English shooter AG Dore also scoring 293 (99).  E Roberts shot a brilliant second half (50x150) to end with a 98x292.  Close behind were three shooters who all shot 291 - these were PT Pritchard, RD Parry and JTD Howells.

The person only a single point on count back behind Morgan after the first qualifier - North Wales shooter RM Faulkner, come in with a very respectable 98x287 after only dropping two points on his last 50 birds (although 11 points on count-back from Morgan on the day).  But there was a bonus for Rodger, he could go home in the knowledge that his hair and eyebrows were still intact after locking himself in the car for a quick sleep in-case his travelling friend Jim Spence shaved them off whilst asleep!

Welsh ladies top scores of note was AE Butler who posted 94x280 and G Morgan who posted 92x270.  Welsh juniors high scorers were AE Biddulph 96 x 283 and A Jones 94x275.  Welsh Veterans high scorers were E Roberts 98 x 292 and EL Davies 97 x 289.

It was good to see Deena Griffiths trying these qualifiers along with the regular ladies, but can we also highlight to people that there are very few lady members trying for qualification this year - so if you've always fancied trying the qualifiers, why not give it a go and support the ladies efforts this year !

Thanks to Mike and all his helpers for some excellent hospitality and shooting, the next DTL qualifier at SW2000 is 23rd May, hope to see you all there.

In the mean time, the very next immediate Welsh DTL qualifier will be held in Mid Wales on 9th May, best of luck everyone.

Welsh Success at the English Open Single Barrel  - Southern Counties - 17th April

Only 2 Welsh men took part in the English Open Single and both took honours !

Firstly, Phil Morgan shot a perfect score of a hundred straight to put him in the driving seat to take High Gun.  Seeing as it was the only one to be posted all day, he duly did and was crowned 2010 English Open single barrel champion.  Phil won this title back in 2002 and was again the only one shooter with a perfect score back then.

Morgan's young shooting student Arren Jones did equally as well - shooting a 93 to take 1st place in C class.

A fantastic result for both shooters.

Cyprus Grand Prix - Nicosia - 25/28th March

The Cyprus Grand Prix took place on 25th to 28th March at Latsia Olympic shooting ranges on the outskirts of Nicosia.  Double Trap was the first event followed by the Olympic Trap and Olympic skeet disciplines.

Whilst at a Cyprus training camp in preparation for the Commonwealth Championships in Delhi early February, suggestions were being made that the Cyprus GP organisers were expecting a record number of shooters and if this happened it would then be necessary to move the women’s competitions to a Friday. With a total entry of 416 competitors the events had to be moved to accommodate.

Interestingly, Elena & Malcolm Allen's tickets were booked to arrive in Cyprus on the Thursday evening despite being fully aware at the time of booking of the possibility of the women’s competition being moved.  Elena had around 5 weeks to think this over and prepare her mind to arrive late and go straight into competition.  Both Elena and Malcolm knew the ranges very well so they were fully prepared after planning the trip at the beginning of the year.  They had also made the decision that at both competitions, Delhi and Cyprus, even if time allowed, they would not shoot any practice.

Elena's only concern was being drawn on a very early squad but she was luckily put in squad 4 out of 7 ladies squads giving her a little extra time on the morning of competition.

Interestingly, the BICTSF decided to send a team of top GB Skeet shooters to compete at the Cyprus GP following a team training camp in the days prior to the competition with the BICTSF skeet section part funding.  Malcolm and Elena were asked to go, but because they did not want to do any training before the competition and felt that it would not be beneficial to their competition, they were told that the BICTSF would not contribute to their flights and individual entries.  With past experience, they both felt that "their way" would be most beneficial to their competitions and also provide an ideal opportunity for some warm weather training after the event in preparation for the next GB selection competition when all other teams were heading home.  Luckily for Malcolm, his flights and entry were paid by the WTSF.

Elena said "It's actually nice for a change to be able to decide yourself, when to go to competitions and how to prepare for them. As I'm paying my own way, no one can criticise when I arrive for the event and whether I shoot official practice or not.  I feel that because I am self-funding this has allowed me to try different things to see what works best for me.  I accept that I will not always win or do well, but at least trying different things allows me to learn more about what works best for me".

Highslide JS
[Click pictures to enlarge]

Work it did, with Elena completing qualification rounds of 25, 24, 24 for 73, just one target of the qualification world record that Elena set in 2005, then shooting a perfect 25 straight in the final under dark skies and heavy drizzle with a stiffening breeze, she finished on 98, just one target off the final world record set on the same range in 2008.  This however is a new final British record for women's skeet.

"It was fantastic to win the Cyprus GP with such a respectful score.  I was disappointed to have missed a low 8 on my 3rd round. I was a bit impatient and instead of going though my usual routine I just rushed the shot. But that is life and I’ve learnt from that mistake".

"It was also very rewarding to have shot 25 ex 25 in the final under pressure. Kassianidou from Cyprus also shot 73 and another Russian shooter Svetlana Demina made the final on 72. They were my closest competition, with the other girls on 71 and 70. So the scores were pretty high to make the final".

"Things have a way of working out sometimes and by winning Cyprus GP, I have also won £500 from the BICTSF which they put up a day or so before the competition. Thank you BICTSF!"

Highslide JS
[Click pictures to enlarge]

And to continue Elena's 2010 performances, she have just won the 2nd GB selection shoot of the year held at Southern Counties with a score of 71 + 24 = 95.  The extra couple of days warm weather training following the Cyprus competition have obviously paid off with Malcolm finishing third, just two target off the lead with 120 + 24 in the men's selection.

Final scores from Cyprus:

Women's Final
1st Elena Allen GBR 25 24 24 25 - 98
2nd Svetlana Demina RUS 24 23 25 24 - 96
3rd Olga Panarina RUS 24 24 23 24 - 95

5th Bianca Kassianidou CYP 25 23 25 20 - 93
6th Vanessa Hauff GER 24 21 25 18 - 88

In the men's skeet, Elena's partner Malcolm Allen scored 118 in his competition, whilst Steve Taylor scored 95.

1st DTL Welsh International Qualifier - Mid Wales Shooting Centre - 11th March

A change in the weather "for the good", made for a promising first Down the Line qualifier shoot.  Sunday arrived and although sunny throughout the day, the wind was quite sharp and swirling at times.  People would have to be switched on as the day would be challenging.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

You can't do anything about the wind, so it was a case of knuckling down and getting on with the task in hand.

The first wave of scores appeared on the score board and it was clear some people weren't finding the day easy.  Lynn Turpin was top of the tree after the first 50 down by only 3 points with a 147.  Wayne Clifton posted his 50 score and was just 5 points down.

At the hundred stage, Lynn had unfortunately lost a few more points - but still ended with a very respectable 98/290, but Wayne edged to the top of the leader board with 100/294.  At this time, it looked like Wayne's score might win the day as the closest scores to Wayne were low 290's and high 280's - with the likes of usual top performers such as Gareth Evans and Glyn Jenkins shooting 288's.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

The next wave of squads went out and conditions didn't look anymore favourable, with winds still swirling and causing the odd problem bird.  It was very surprising therefore to see a couple of 296's posted by Welsh shooter R.M. Faulkner and English shooter J.K. Price.  But the fun didn't end there, where was Phil Morgan on this challenging day ??? - he was out there doing the business and come in with 100/297 to take high gun for the day, with zero points of count-back to start his Welsh team qualification campaign.

Highslide JS
[Click picture to enlarge]

Welsh lady shooter Lynn Turpin and Welsh Veteran J.H. Jones shot an excellent 98/290, giving them a good start to ladies and veterans team qualification with only seven points on count-back.

Top Welsh Junior shooter was G.L. Roberts shooting 94/279, well done.

Shoot Scoring Summary:

High Gun:    P.R. Morgan 100x297

1st AA:   R.M. Faulkner 99x296
2nd AA:   L. Jones 98x292

1st A:   J.K. Price 100x296
2nd A:  W. Clifton 100x294

Thanks to Mid Wales Shooting Centre, all the staff/helpers and the excellent catering - its a privilege to be able to shoot and dine there !

The next Welsh DTL qualifier takes place as South Wales 2000 on 25th April, see you there !

Finally a message to Sally Morrow -  the ladies team wish Sally Morrow a happy honeymoon and look forward to seeing her back at the qualifiers.  Congratulations Sally from all of us !

Cyprus Grand Prix  - Nicosia Olympic Shooting Range - 21st March

JOHN HALL & ELENA ALLEN WIN GOLD

There was not much hanging around after the Olympic Trap shoot at Griffin-Lloyd SG on the 21st March 2010 for a handful of OT shooters who made their way to the airport catching a flight to Cyprus for the Grand Prix at Nicosia Olympic Shooting Range, Latsia.  The Range hosted the ISSF World Cup Championships in 2003 so shooters were spoilt with excellent ranges and facilities.  The weather varied from glorious sunshine, rain and hazy conditions.  Targets were very testing with big angles, shot over four layouts to accommodate the large entry of OT shooters; 30 squads made up of shooters from Russia, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Czech Republic, Cyprus, GB, Greece, IOM, Germany, France, Slovakia, Lebanon only to name a few.

Team Wales taking part in the OT were; John Hall, Ian Parry Belcher, Jonathan Davies, Neil Jones, Allan Williams, Roland Hill, Chris Belcher, Jackie Lewis and Skeet shooter Steve Taylor.

Congratulation to John Hall (111) for winning Gold in the Veterans event and who shot an exceptional 49/50 on day 2.  Well done to Ian P.B making the top 25.  It was good to see Welsh shooter Jonathan in 2nd place after day 1 having shot 72/75 which included two 25’s back to back, only two on the board throughout the competition.

Competition was fierce; Russia took Gold in the Men’s event (Alipov 121+21) and Woman’s (Laricheva 69+22).  The Beijing Olympic Silver Medallist, Stefecekova (SVK) took Silver (69+21) and Kostelecky (CZE) (men’s Gold Beijing) finish 8th (116).

Competing for Team GB in the Skeet event were Welsh Shooters Malcolm and Elena Allen.  Elena went into the final leading with 73 and shot a 25 straight in the rainy dark conditions finishing on 98, two points ahead of Russian’s, Demina Svetlana on 96 (72+24).  Congratulation to Elena, for yet again another outstanding performance, winning Gold in the Women’s event.

National Skeet Welsh International Qualifier Shoots 1 and 2 - South Wales 2000 - 10th and 11th April

Eight squads turned out to enjoy the spring sunshine at this premier shooting ground - South Wales 2000.  With little or no wind on the first day and glorious sunshine high scores were expected, unfortunately the day produced a lacklustre performance from most.

The highest score of the day 96 from Aled Jones was closely followed by last years world championship captain Huw Evans with a 95.  Many were left floundering in the low 90s and lower!  Gareth Irving provided some consistency recording a 94 on the Saturday and a 95 on Sunday.  Possibly the rest of the scores were lower due to the unexpected good weather and perfect targets, catching the Welsh off guard!

For juniors Katie Cowell and Ben Llewellyn this was their first international qualifier.  Both are shooters to watch in the future, with Ben shooting 83 on Saturday, and Katie posting a credible 88 on Sunday.  Andrew Davey, shooting with a gun of fixed chokes ¼ and ¾ also shot a pair of 88's (I know Mr. Teague will be working his magic on Andrews Browning very soon!)  Another one to watch is George Seabourne who shot his personal best on Saturday.  Gareth Walters on leave from the British Army shot a 92 on the Sunday, to firmly announce his return to the international scene.  Top shot of the juniors so far, I’m pleased to say is Nat Davies and this lady junior shoot 185 of the 200 targets over the weekend.  Well done to all the juniors!

Only 3 ladies attended the two days, with Deena Griffiths leading the way, shooting a 94 on Saturday.  Following Deena is Angie Goodman, putting in 84 consistently, and Angie Oliver close at her heels.

Over the weekend 6 vets made an appearance.  Alan Parkin is top after the first two shoots, shooting a joint high gun of 96 on the Sunday.  Close on his heels Rob Hodson then Jeff Williams.  Looking promising is Geoff Seaborne, who could only make the Saturday and shot a 91.

Despite the lower than expected scores, the weekend was a success. I would like to thank Mike and his team for the weekend.  Hopefully, we will have more weather like this for the next shoot in Mid Wales on the 8th and 9th of May!

ABT Welsh Selection - Griffin Lloyd - 11th April 2010

Dry and changeable light conditions with a light breeze greeted four and a half squads who turned out to shoot the first ABT selection of the season at JK'S.  With a DTL qualifier being held at Mid Wales on the same day, big numbers were not expected, but not to worry - all that turned up were looking forward to a good day.

Targets were checked and shooting started at 10am on the dot.

At the 50 stage 2 shooters led the way on 45 a piece Graham Evans and Jason Shannon, closely followed by Andrew Harris and Charlie Snelgrove on 44.

By the third stage Evans and Shannon had been joined by a trio of shooters on 66 Phil Dando, Nigel Hawyes and Charlie Snelgrove - with Rob Parry 65 Andrew Harris and Neil Southcott Both on 64 close on there heels.  This was to make the last round very interesting!

A very uncharacteristic 19 left Evans out of the running, leaving 3 shooters to share High Gun of the day - these were: Dando, Shannon and Snelgrove on 88 a piece.

Good to See T Hawkins (junior) getting to grips with the targets ending up on a fine 83, well done!

Thanks to JK, Joyce and Staff for the usual warm reception and testing targets.  We look forward to seeing you all (and hopefully) more at the next selection shoot at South Wales 2000 on May 2nd, which is also the Gwyn Rogers memorial shoot.

South Wales 2000 Shooting Ground - DTL Winter Series Results

Another good turn out for this the final of the DTL Winter Series.  The weather was also kind with broken sunshine and a little breeze.

On to the shooting, C class was being contested by 2 shooters George Seabourne and Huw Williams with young Seabourne 5 points clear of Williams.  Seabourne did not turn out for this one, so it meant Williams would have to improve on previous scores to over come the 5 point difference.

B class was nothing like this as runaway leader Arren Jones had out pointed most of the class shooters throughout the series so it was only a formality for him today.

Elsewhere A class was hotting up with John Campbell leading Geoff Seabourne by 6 points with a late runner by way of Gary Beagan only having to put a serious score in the 290's to possibly take it from them both.

In AA it would be between Nelson rivals Alan Poole and John Evans for the spoils with the onus being on Evans to produce the goods.

High Gun unfortunately had already been decided as Phil Morgan had won all of the previous shoot events.

So here's how it finished:

High Gun: Phil Morgan 889 x 900

AA - Alan J Poole 856 x 900

A - John Campbell 857 x 900

B - Arren Jones 848 x 900

C - Huw Williams 778 x 900

All class winners received 250 shells with the High Gun winner taking more than a hundred pounds in prize money.

Once again I would like to thank the staff and ground owner for putting the event on and congratulate all the winners.
