NEWS / REPORTS APRIL 2009

Third Welsh Team Down The Line Qualifier for 2009 (Mid Wales Shooting Centre)

Sunday 26th April 2009 saw the third DTL Welsh qualifier at Mid Wales Shooting Centre.

PR Morgan was on top form again - taking the overall high gun on 100 x 299.  This means Phil has now had high gun on two out of the three Welsh team DTL qualifiers - therefore getting count back scoring on both of those qualifiers as zero points.  With a count back score of 3 on the other qualifier, he looks the man to beat this season.

Welsh high scorer hot on the tail of Phil Morgan was Will Andrews on 100 x 298.

GD Jenkins performed well again and shot 100 ex 297 - on the back of his 100 x 300 that he shot in the second qualifier in Mid Wales recently.  Also on 100 x 297 was frequent top scoring Welsh shooter - AJ Poole.

Top Welsh Lady shooter Cas Treahearne also posted 100 x 297 to command her lead at the top of the ladies team (Cas also took the A class top prize).

Top Welsh Veteran D Medlicott also matched this incredible scoring with 100 x 297.

The top scoring Welsh Junior for the day was A Jones on 97 x 284, with MW Jones closely behind on 98 x 283.

We would also like to congratulate Gail Morgan who was second highest scoring Welsh lady - shooting a personal best of 96 x 286 - well done.

Some top English Junior shooting was also seen at this Welsh qualifier with two of their shooters being very close to taking overall high gun - Junior A Sikorski shot 100 x 298 to be joint runner up overall closely followed by his fellow English Junior team mate J. Thompson who shot 100 x 297.

Well done to everybody in a very high scoring qualifier.

Thanks again to the Williams family and all their helpers for providing another great event.

The Britannia Grand Prix - Southern Counties Shooting Ground

The Britannia Grand Prix was held at Southern Counties SG on April 18th - 19th 2009.  The event comprised of Olympic Skeet, Olympic Trap, Double Trap and SportTrap.  The event originated as an Olympic Skeet competition in 2003 to encourage novices and the "occasional shooter" to aspire to shooting at international level.  Since 2003 other disciplines have been added and the event has grown and its now hoped it will help towards focusing and training people towards the 2012 Olympics on home soil.

During this years event there was some very good shooting taking place from the Welsh participants.

Malcolm Allen shot a 25 straight in the Olympic Skeet flash final to take the individual Olympic Skeet gold medal.  Not to be left out - his wife Elena Litle took the ladies gold medal as well !!!

Cerys Evans entered her first major Olympic Skeet competition to be a very credible 5th in the ladies - she is obviously a natural talent to look out for in the future !

Wales team A Seniors also performed very well in the event and took a bronze medal in the Olympic Skeet Team event.

This truly was a top international event - with shooters coming over from as far as the USA, so well done to all the Welsh representatives - incredible results at the very highest level !

Second Welsh Team Down The Line Qualifier for 2009 (Mid Wales Shooting Centre)

Sunday 12 April on Easter Bank Holiday saw the second Welsh qualifier at Mid Wales Shooting Centre.

155 shooters turned up to be met by glorious sunny conditions with the occasional light breeze.

The jury at Mid Wales had set up the targets to be reasonably testing , with some angled birds proving difficult for some of the shooters - but with bright sunshine and near perfect conditions, they were there to be hit and indications were that the scoring would be very good.  The "big hitters" would be looking to capitalise on these conditions.

Glyn Jenkins set the pace with his second 100/300 at mid Wales in the first wave of squads.  Some shooters joked with Glyn that he had done the lesser mortals no favours as the "count back" would be from the perfect score 100/300.

Welsh lady shooter Cas Trehearne posted an impressive 99/293 to be top lady shooter for this qualifier and to take second in A class.

Ifor Williams started off well and on the second wave of squads also posted another 100/300, things were now hotting up even more.

Graham Evans posted a perfect 75/225 and all eyes were on him as people expected to see a 3 man shoot off for high gun,  but he barrelled 1 in his last round to finish on 299.

Ifor and Glyn completed the shoot off with Ifor winning as Glyn had missed 2 targets.

Other notable top scores worth a mention were PR Morgan 100/297, D Hughes 100/297 and RT Gudrat 100/297 who all hit the magic 100 with just a few second barrels.

Well done  everybody, the results are as follows:

First Welsh ABT Team Selection Shoot - South Wales 2000 - April 5th

The A.B.T. shooters must have thought they won the lottery being greeted with such a calm and bright day at South Wales 2000.  Attendance was high, with 9 squads in total being filled.

So down to business...........at the 50 stage things were hotting up with Rob Davies on squad 1 posting a 49 A.J.Williams on the same squad 48.  Phil Morgan on squad 2 also on 49.  Andrew Harris back from abroad was going well with a 48 and Phil Dando who hasn't been seen for a while - also started well with a 48.

At the 75 stage a slight gap had opened up amongst the early leaders.  Morgan was at 74 followed closely by Davies and Harris both on 71 with a cluster of shooters on a 70.

Into the last as they say in horse racing.  Davies and Williams who were on squad 1 finished 96 & 95 respectively followed by Nigel Hawkes on a 95.  Morgan on Squad 2 not knowing what the others had done finished with a 24 and a final tally of 98 would put pressure on the following squads to shoot well and limit the amount of points being dealt them.

With the amount of shooters attending the timely intervention of the third layout was well greeted by the shooters and the shooting ended at a good time with those who travelled down from North Wales, giving them a chance to get home at a reasonable time.

Once again I would like to thank South Wales 2000 on behalf of the shooters for a great day and well presented targets with 14 scores of 90 and above.  Keep this up lads and you could find yourselves winning the International Match.

County Final Information

We would like to remind travelling shooter's that Welsh county finals are "closed shoots" i.e. only the people that have been selected to represent their counties will be entitled to shoot on that day.

We feel this reminder is necessary due to the fact that extra people are turning up at these events who have not qualified to shoot for their county - which is causing problems because getting through an already large number of squads is difficult anyway, but extra people slow the process down even further and make for a very long day.

First Welsh Team Down The Line Qualifier for 2009 (SW 2000)

We couldn't have wished for better weather for this first event on this years Down the Line calendar.  Shooters who had shot here over the years have never been greeted with a nice day at South Wales 2000, so I think it was a bit of an eye opener to everybody who took part.

Down to the shooting and at the 50 stage things were tight but it was an Englishman by way of Alan Paige and Welshman Geoff Seabourne who were out in front with 149 x 150 followed closely by Kevin Gunter 148 and Phil Morgan 148 Karl Jones 148 John Evans 148 Eric Davies 148 Gareth Howells 148 to name but a few.  G.Beagan and T.Moseley were on 147 a piece along with Brendan Jones.

With the Englishman barrelling a target on his 75 stage and Morgan putting in a straight meant they were level with a round to shoot along with Seabourne.  With the other lads either barrelling a target or going straight nothing was cut and dry with 25 to go.

At the end though it was Morgan who was victor not dropping anymore points ending with 100 x 298.

2009 Cyprus Grand Prix News (Olympic Skeet and Olympic Trench)

News from the 2009 Cyprus Grand Prix which is a popular event for travelling Welsh Olympic Skeet and Trench shooters.

19 different countries took part, Russia and Cyprus being the strongest contingent, Russia took over 30 shooters and were there for 5 weeks training prior to the competition.  With this kind of training taking place by other nations, any Welsh success would be an incredible result.

And an incredible result it was - Scott Morgan won Gold for Junior Trap, Cheryl Gizzi won Gold for Ladies Trap and John Hall took silver in the Veteran Men's Trap category.

Well done everybody - as you can see Wales did very well especially considering that they were shooting against the cream of Olympic Skeet and Trench shooters.
