Beverley Shooting Ground East Yorkshire - 200 DTL Event - April 29th/30th 2006

Phil Morgan was the only Welshman to make the 4 hour journey North for this event.  It was a first visit for Morgan to this ground having not shot there before.

Day One - Paul Chaplow posted an excellent score of 100 x 298 to lead the field on the first day with the likes of junior shooter Andy Waddington on 295, Trevor Peel 294, Rob Hall (the sponsor of the event) 293, Dave Toomer 292 and Stafford, Morgan, Webster and Dore on 291. A number of the big guns fell over on the day with the likes of John Bellamy shooting a 277 and Keith Bond on a 285 along with Ian Mullarkey. Ex world champion Terry Humphreys shooting a 273.

Day Two - Everybody was hoping to put in a better performance than the previous day.  With all eyes on Paul Chaplow to see if he would slip up.  On his first visit he barrelled two targets and one on his putting him 5 points down at the 150 stage.  Morgan barrelling one in his first and clearing the second was now 10 points down with fifty to shoot.  With Chaplow clearing his third round and Morgan doing the same - it all came down to the last round with five points still the margin.  A crowd had gathered to watch Chaplow shoot his final round and barrelling a target early on was now down six points with half the round to go but it finished that way.  Morgan completed his last round clear ending up on a 100 x 299 still 10 points down with Chaplow only 6 over the two days.

Wagga Wagga NSW Australia - World DTL Event - Welsh News - April 17th 2006

April the 4th was the Single Barrel National event and Phil Morgan made it through to the shoot off with 24 other shooters.  Getting down to the last 4 was tough going.  Missing a target in the 4th round of the shoot off saw Morgan having to shoot for 2nd in AA grade and 3rd overall in another shoot off.  Phil disposing of the other competitor took honors in AA grade. Winning $830:00 for 2nd and $1394:00 in the sweeps this all totaled as 988.00 pounds.

Down to the team event which started on the Friday 7th with a strong left to right wind made shooting difficult resulting in the scores being so low. However this didn't stop John Stafford posting a perfect 300 putting pressure on the other shooters for the following two days.  Welsh shooters were up against it not shooting to their potential due to the conditions but never the less the male and female shooters gave a good account of themselves the following day shooting better but the damage was all ready done due to the poor scores from the previous day.

Moving to the third day saw Morgan shoot 148 x 150 14 points down over the 250 targets hoping to put him into the top 10 percent for the last 50 targets.  Making the 10 percent but to many points down to make any impact on the eventual out come of the final positions. Dropping 5 points in the final 50 finished 19 points down over the 300 targets.  Congratulations got to well known shooter John Stafford from England who was crowned World Champion, the full results are available here:

A special thank you to all the Welsh Team members who took part and best of luck for the fourth coming selection shoots and don't forget about places being up for grabs for the European this year in Bywell.

Mid Wales Shooting Centre - Welsh National Skeet Qualifier - April 9th 2006

Four seasons in one day, the words from a song that suited the conditions faced by the skeet shooters in Mid Wales last Sunday.  They were hit by everything from gusting winds to hail and snow.

The targets fluctuated with the wind but were in the air to be hit.  High gun position went to Richard Stepney with a very creditable 99/100, a single high 2 on his first round getting away.  British Champion Joe Kitson was hard on his heels with a 97 closely followed by our own Chris Potter on 96.

Lady shooter Angie Goodman led the way in the ladies category with a superb 95 with Linda Hewitt on 94.

Juniors went to Nick Parish on 91, Rhys Evans on 90 and one half of the County Pairs Champions Shane Wilson on 87.

Gracious thanks to Arthur and Rita for hosting the event and for making sure that the DTL squads also suffered from the snow.

The next skeet qualifier will be at South Wales 2000 on April 23rd.

Telpyn Shooting Ground - Welsh Olympic Skeet Qualifier - April 9th 2006

Telpyn hosted the first selection of the year for the Olympic Team and the shooters were greeted with dry but very windy conditions.  Windy being an understatement!!

It was somewhat of a culture shock for Commonwealth shooter Tony Grove to be shooting in 3 layers of clothing instead of shorts and t shirt.

High gun went to Ian McFarlane with a creditable 73 followed closely by Del Davies going for his 26th cap on 72, along with Julian Jeremy, Trevor Rands and Gary Brewer who was trying out his new 30 “ Miroku for the first time. Who said that size doesn’t matter !

Thanks to Rob and Shirley for hosting the event, the next selection shoot will be at SW 2000 on April 16th.

Mid Wales Shooting Centre - 2006 National Skeet Inter Counties Final - April 2nd 2006

(Click on the thumbnails in this report to see the pictures full page)

Not many skeet shooters who arrived at Mid Wales Shooting Centre on the 2nd April for the Welsh Inter Counties National Skeet Final will ever have experienced weather conditions like that before!  Gale force winds, driving rain and very cold temperatures for good measure.  What a welcome for the new caps!

Six Counties competed without complaint and it was nice to see West and Mid Glamorgan putting teams in.  It certainly paid off for West Glamorgan as with no room for error with all shooters scores to count, they finished 2nd on 722, just one point ahead of Dyfed.  But it was Clwyd who stole the show with an excellent score 767 (pictured in the team thumbnail on the right).

There were a couple of outstanding scores considering the conditions such as J.Thomas, overall high gun and winner of the Captains Cup, on a 96 (pictured in the thumbnail on the left) and A.Jones on a 94. Tremendous shooting, boys!

Ladies High Gun was won by Dyfed shooter Carol Francis who also went on to win the Ladies team shield with Angie Goodman.

Jordan Clifford from Mid Glamorgan took the Junior High Gun.  Chris Potter will be keeping his Veteran trophy after winning it for a third consecutive year whist shooting for Dyfed and also added the winning Veteran team event with Tim Hardaker to his successes.
Veteran champion Chris Potter and Junior champion Jordan Clifford are shown in the thumbnail on the right.

Juniors Ed Poore and Shane Wilson from Dyfed took the team shield for the Juniors (shown in the thumbnail on the left).
Congratulations to all the new caps - just remember - it isn't always that windy, cold and wet!

Final County Positions:

Clwyd 767
West Glamorgan  722 Dyfed  721
Powys  694
Mid Glamorgan  673
Gwynedd 620

SW2000 Shooting Ground - First Welsh DTL Qualifier - April 2nd 2006

Very hard conditions caused by extremely strong winds set the scene for the first Welsh DTL international team qualifier for 2006.

Early selection shoots were often ignored by some shooters thinking that the early scores would be of no use as conditions improved through the spring and summer, but with the count-back rule - it is worth attending every selection shoot.  As such, a good turnout appeared for this first qualifier.

Tom Devaney has been shooting consistently well for a long period of time and deservedly was high gun of the day with 97 x 287 - four points clear of David Baugh who took 1st in AA on 97 x 283.  Second in AA was L. Jones on 95 x 280.

In A class - P.A. Murphy took 1st place with 97 x 279 and 2nd place went to J.A. Evans with 95 x 277.

In B class - A. Biddulph took 1st place with 96 x 280 and 2nd place went to E. Davies with 97 x 273.

In C class - H. Thomas took 1st place with 93 x 268, R.J. Webb took 2nd place with 90 x 262, D. Lewis took 3rd place with 90 x 261 and 4th place went to C.J. Bolas with 87 x 252.

Congratulations to you all in very testing conditions.

All eyes now look towards the forthcoming DTL world championships and the next qualifier which is at Mid Wales shooting centre on April 23rd.

The updated team positions are available here.
