Considering the awful weather we've had this year, it was fifth time lucky for the last Inter-Counties Final - "The All Round", with dry but cold and windy weather at Mid Wales Shooting Centre on the 19th October.
The cold weather meant some tried to warm up by having a brew in the clubhouse such as part of the Clwyd team shown below and others found themselves a quite corner and shared body heat !
Some people were just glad to be out shooting some clays as a very happy Trevor Morgan shows below:
An amazing 17 squads made the journey, to which the County Coordinators should be congratulated for their hard work.
After a couple of hic-cups getting the teams into some sort of order, the clubhouse was left very quiet as people left to shoot.
The Shoot
There were some fine performances in the skeet with John Thomas (Gwent), Tom Hayes and Alun Evans (Clwyd), Mark Davies (West Glam), Richard Jones (Powys) and Del Davies (Dyfed) all shooting 25 straight.
The sporting layout was quite tough this year and it certainly sorted the men from the boys! There were some low scores coming in, with only three shooters putting in scores over 20, Dorian Evans (Powys), Allan Davies (Dyfed) and Elgan Pugh (Gwynedd) all putting in scores of 21.
Better scores were found in the ABT with two of the Powys lads, Pete Humphreys and Chris Wright putting in tremendous scores of 24 and Dyfeds Edward Poore following suite having dropped his last but one bird for a 25 straight! Very unlucky Edward.
As usual though it was the DTL that provided that much needed boost to some of the shooters scores with 13 of them shooting perfect rounds.
Some pictures of some of the counties squads "out on the ground" are shown below:
Results
There were 3 complete Junior teams this year which was great to see but it was Cerys Evans from Gwent who showed the boys what 'girl power' is all about! She just pipped Luke Llewellin and James Richards from Dyfed, for the Junior High Gun with a 78. A fantastic achievement, although the two Dyfed lads did retain the Junior Team shield for Dyfed.
Also from Dyfed, were the formidable pairing of Deena Griffiths and Carol Francis fresh from their victory at the Skeet Home International (where they won the Ladies and Individual events), who yet again this year took the Ladies Team shield with Carol just edging ahead of Deena to take the Ladies High Gun on a 79.
The Veterans Team shield for the last two years has gone to Gwynedd, but this year saw Del Davies and Llew David shooting for Dyfed and together they strolled home putting in a joint score of 166, and giving them the Veterans Shield, a clear 11 clays ahead of Gwent. Del Davies was also to take the overall veterans high gun.
With the new score board in the club house up and running, it was going to be a waiting game for those shooters who were hoping they had done enough to make their County - "the All Round County winners 2008".
It had been a tussle between Powys and Dyfed for the last couple of years, with Dyfed taking it from Powys last year so Trevor Morgan (Powys County Co-ordinator) was determined to take it back off Dyfed and go for the double having taken the Sporting Shield away from Dyfed earlier this year.
It became obvious before the last score sheet had come in, that Powys had taken the title. The end result was a clear 25 clays in front of Dyfed, more than in the previous years!
The Senior High Gun trophy also went to Powys, courtesy of Richard Hughes finishing on a 91, great shooting Richard!
Along with that trophy heading back to Powys, was the Captains trophy. Dorian Evans score of 88 was just enough to take the Captains trophy having been pushed all the way by 3 other Captains namely Elgan Pugh(87), Mark Davies(86) and John Thomas(85).
Finally, Gwynedd handed out trophies to their top shooters for their individual performances:

For the last county final this year we must once again finally thank Mid Wales Shooting Centre, the Williams family and all the staff and helpers for their hospitality, excellent food and excellent shooting.
This was the first time in quite a few seasons to have 6 Counties at the All Round final and thanks go to the Co-ordinators for their hard work in getting their respective Counties to the finals. It has been noted that we need more layouts operational on the day for a smoother run so rest assured, that will be the case next year.
We must also thank Angie Goodman for all the work that she puts into preparing and organising all county finals, the last one being just as successful as all the others.
A special thanks to you the shooters for making this event what it is today. Whether you win or lose, it is a big achievement to represent your county at such a prestigious level and you should all be very proud of yourselves. The relevant county co-ordinators should also give themselves a pat on the back for all the work they put into bringing this years teams together.
May we thank anybody who bought raffle tickets at the event as they will be going towards buying some "colt" trophies for next year.
We hope to see you all again next year !
