The 2007 Welsh All Round County Final - Mid Wales Shooting Centre -October 21st 2007

The last Inter-Counties Final for this year was the All Round which took place at Mid Wales Shooting Centre on the 21st October.

There was a little hiccup with the weather as first thing there was quite a fog hanging over the DTL and ABT layouts.  Some of the squads went off to see what the Sporting and Skeet were looking like whilst some of the others just had another cup of coffee and bacon butties'  -  til it lifted!

Within the hour, the sun broke through and produced the most perfect of days for shooting with just sun and no wind.  A nice day for some enjoyable shooting.......

Talking of perfect - Matthew Rees from Dyfed put in a near perfect score of 98ex100 missing just one sporting target and one ABT target! Quite an amazing feat !!
Matthew was also captain for Dyfed and the nearest score to his was a 95, so it meant that not only did he win the overall High Gun but also the Captains cup as well. Well done Matthew and very well shot!

It was a much closer contest between the Ladies with Deena Griffiths from Dyfed and Joan Hayes from Clwyd battling it out.  There was a real tussle going on with Deena going ahead on the DTL by one target then Joan going one ahead by one on the Skeet and the ABT, but Deena just managed to close the gap and shoot a 19 to Joan's 17 on the Sporting, finishing on a 86 to Joan's 85.  Deena also went on to win the Ladies Team shield for Dyfed with fellow Dyfed shooter Carol Francis. Well done Ladies!

Gwynedd put a team in this year and they made their presence known thanks in particular to the Veterans.  Mike Lees put in a very fine performance with an 86 - with only his ABT letting him down a little but considering this is a County that doesn't even have an ABT layout to practice on, he came through with shinning colours and took the overall Veterans cup.  His team partner, Robin Jones, also put in a very commendable score of 78, again struggling with the ABT, and together they took the Veterans team shield back to Gwynedd with them.  Very well done lads !!  Hope to see you all next year. I

It's nice to see the silverware spread around Wales.......not far behind the Senior scores was a Junior, Stephen Jones, from Clwyd with a brilliant score of 83.  Stephen has had a superb year as he has also won the Inter-Counties Sporting Junior High Gun earlier this year at Griffin Lloyd.  So with the All Round junior high gun to add to this - its been quite a double and and exceptional season!

Dyfed juniors managed to hold on to the title of winning junior team from last year but with a different combination of shooters. This year it was Maverick Sherman and Lloyd Evans who shared the winning shield just 6 clays in front of the Clwyd juniors! Well done lads!

Individual trophy winners are displayed below:

Powys won the senior competition from Dyfed last year by 15 clays. This year it was a reversal of fortunes except that Dyfed only took the shield back by 6 clays. But they took it back! I'm sure Trevor and his team will be looking forward to getting another go at getting it back next year!

Another year and another set of targets, long may it continue!

Many thanks go to Arthur, Rita, the rest of the Williams family and staff at Mid Wales Shooting Centre for such an enjoyable day.

We must thank Angie Goodman for yet another fine organised event which has finished the season off a treat.  May we also thank all the "backroom" staff i.e. Rita and helpers for all the number crunching and organisation of squads which help these events run so smoothly.

Finally thanks to all who took part in the final and to those who tried the qualifiers and never go to the final - it all adds to the appeal and competitiveness of these events - good luck next year, we hope to see you again.
