2009 County ABT Final
The 2009 ABT County Final was held at South Wales 2000 - September 27th 2009
South Wales 2000 held the ABT County Final this year and the shooters were warmly received by Mike and Margaret and their hard working staff.
It was a shame this year that the defending county champions Clwyd were unable to field a team, so it was only down to 4 Counties to contend this Final. But as usual with these ABT teams, it was going to be a friendly but tough challenge with some excellent shooters out there looking to take trophies and titles back home with them.
Helen Jones from Powys shot consistently well through out the shoot and finished on a remarkable 87 giving her the Ladies title, 6 targets ahead of Helen Thomas from Dyfed. Unfortunately though for Powys, Jackie Lewis who partners Helen for the Ladies team, was shooting in the Isle of Man so the girls knew that the team trophy wouldn't be going back to Powys. That was down to Deena Griffiths and Helen Thomas to bring that back to Dyfed. Well done girls!
Glamorgan had the staying power for the older gentlemen i.e. the Vets! John Henry Thomas put in a tremendous score of 90 for the Veterans High Gun and with the pairing of Stan Bruford and himself, they together took the Vets Team trophy as well back to Mid Glamorgan. Second time for you Stan, well done.
There have been some very talented youngsters coming through this year starting with Luke Murray from Powys who put a score in that most Seniors would have been happy with. Luke took the Junior trophy back to Powys with a very impressive 86! Very well done Luke. Luke and his Junior partner of Tim Hawkins took the Junior Team shield as well. Congratulations to you both lads!
Another young man from Gwent who was shooting for the new class trophy of Colt put in score that was even better! Andrew Collins shot his socks off! This young man who is only 13 and has been shooting for just 6 months, put a score in of 88 to win the new Colts trophy! What a way to win it! Very well done Andrew. I'm sure we will be hearing more about you and your shooting achievements in the months to come !
The Captains trophy was being fiercely contested but unfortunately Nigel Hawyes had to retire after 75 due to a back injury and that left three. Charlie Snelgrove was just leading by one clay at the half way stage from Rob Parry with a 46ex50, but it was the last two rounds that saw Charlie pull away and finish on a straight giving him 95 over Robs 91.
It was just the Senior High Gun to decide now and that meant putting Charlie back into the frame again to shoot-off against Roger Jones from Mid Glamorgan. Roger took the bull by the horns and there was just no stopping him! 23 broken clays later gave him the Senior High Gun of the day against Charlies 20. The shoot-off was a fantastic finish to a fantastic day.
All that remained was the totalling of the Senior scores to see which County had won the title. Mid Glamorgan had taken the title back again after a little trip to the North last year with a score of 535 to 2nd place Dyfed on 505, one of their best results for several years. In third place was Gwent on 496 just one clay ahead of 4th place Powys on 495.

Some more pictures from around the ground on the day:
There was just one dampener on the whole day. If shooters have been selected to shoot for their county, it would make the office staffs job so much easier if they could inform either myself, the ground or their Co-ordinators that they are not attending giving the reserves the opportunity to shoot. Just one phone call is all it takes.
Many thanks to everyone who did attend and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.
